Tele(visualising) health: TV, public health, its enthusiasts and its publics

The conference aims to bring together scholars from different fields (such as, but not limited to, history, history of science, history of medicine, communication, media and film studies, television studies) working on the history of television in Great Britain, France and Germany (West and East) (the focus of the ERC BodyCapital project), but also other European countries, North and South America, Russia, Asia or other countries and areas. Papers might focus on one national, regional or even local framework. Considering the history of health-related (audio-) visuals as a history of transfer, as entangled history or with a comparative perspective are welcome. The organizers welcome contributions with a strong historical impetus from all social and cultural sciences.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century

The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Gloria Anzandúa : Translating B/borders

Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa (1942-2004) est une figure intellectuelle de premier plan. Son œuvre se situe au croisement de plusieurs champs disciplinaires et artistiques. Elle est née aux États-Unis, dans la vallée du Rio Grande, à la frontière entre le Texas et le Mexique, dans une famille qui a vécu aux États-Unis pendant six générations. Elle est morte à Santa Cruz, en Californie. Les travaux d’Anzaldúa sont fondamentaux, qu’il s’agisse de la théorie culturelle Chicana·x, ou des théories féministes et queer.

The main aim of the Hamsa Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies is to create a virtual multi-disciplinary space in which all perspectives of the History, Language and Literature of Jews and Muslims can converge, as well as themes on Judaism and Islam in general. Pour la XVI^e édition de son colloque annuel, l’International Medieval Society Paris lance un appel à contribution sur tous les aspects du temps au Moyen Âge. Les propositions pourront traiter de l’expérience ou de l’exploitation du temps, de son calcul et de sa mesure, de son inscription, sa théorisation, ou de la question de savoir comment, pourquoi ou s’il faut délimiter le « Moyen Âge ». Les communications portant sur un matériel historique ou culturel de la France médiévale ou de la Gaule dans l’Antiquité tardive, ou sur des textes en Français ou en Occitan médiéval, sont particulièrement encouragés, mais les propositions convaincantes portant sur d’autres matières seront bien sûr aussi prises en compte.

The epoch of space. State and new perspectives

For centuries, the study of time was one of the main academic interests in the field of Humanities. However, in the second half of the 20^th century, most scholars and philosophers shifted their focus to the question of space. The interest in studying this in the field of the arts has increased significantly in recent years, and is especially noticeable in the case of literary creations.The growing influence of ecocriticism and geocriticism is especially noticeable in digital humanities. The bridges recently built between these fields are already proving to be productive, as they have led to the development of new tools, approaches, and methodologies, such as deep mapping techniques and the spatial humanities. How have the disciplines evolved in recent years? Do we need to redefine the key concepts regarding space and place? Has our relationship with territory changed? Have we produced new ways of inhabiting space?

Global Ethics of Compromise

What are the normative assumptions and solutions proposed to develop morally right or wrong compromise typologies? Can we develop a universal ethics of compromise or does compromise vary depending on the socio-cultural history of a country? To what extent is culture relevant in shaping types and norms of compromise? The conference aims, firstly, to understand how to distinguish a compromise from a compromise of principles; what constitutes an ethical or fair compromise? Second, it will analyze if practices of compromise vary from one country to another. To do so, different types of compromise will be explored through geopolitical, philosophical, historical approaches, with a particular focus on Japan and Taiwan. This symposium will examine theoretical issues and practices associated with compromise, by adopting a global perspective. It will bring together contributions from European, American and Asian researchers.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Charles C. Eldredge Prize. Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a one-page letter explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Conference metalepsis

Metalepsis has been increasingly present in several artistic fields, by enhancing a self-reflexive porosity between narrative levels and by provoking a very special kind of ontological sliding. When Gérard Genette (1972) transferred this figure from the field of rhetoric to that of narratology, in order to describe the subversion of boundaries between narrative levels, or the non-distinction between the diegetic and extradiegetic worlds, he associated the disquieting nature of the metalepsis with the following “unacceptable and insistent” hypothesis: we, as recipients of a work structured by this narratological figure, may find ourselves in the (Borgesian) odd circumstance of noticing that the extradiagetic could already be the diegetic.

This panel - epidemics, climate and history – for the European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference in Tallinn (2019) aims to explore specific climatic/environmental and institutional factors that shaped both the way in which plagues lato sensu and other epidemics, including cholera, yellow fever, typhus, typhoid fever, leprosy, syphilis, etc., originated and spread as well as the consecutive significant demographic and socio-economic consequences at a local or regional scale throughout history (without geographical limitation). A particular attention will be given to original interdisciplinary approaches linking natural proxy archives and written documentary sources.

Nous encourageons la soumission de contributions sur le rôle que joue la cognition dans la créativité verbale dans des contextes divers (e.g. dans les conversations, dans la rhétorique, dans l’humour, dans la communication interculturelle, dans les arts, etc.). Seront également bienvenus les études sur la créativité dans des gestes, dans la multimodalité, et des études sur le sujet par des approches diverses (e.g. linguistique de corpus, sociolinguistique, psycholinguistique, etc.). The panel will examine the practices and themes of Libyan resistance, defined as the concrete expression of the dialectical tension between the political and institutional centers of power and the social movements, group actors, or individuals that opposed them, covering the chronological span from the Ottoman reconquest in 1835 to the Jamāhīriyya’s fall in 2011.

Kolloquium - Neuere und Zeitgeschichte

Industrial vigilantism, strikebreaking and patterns of anti-labour violence, 1890s-1930s

The conference is open to multi-disciplinary approaches and to both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In particular, it will explore the complex relationships between private agencies, semi-public groups, and local and national police authorities. One particular focus will be the development of organizational forms of strike-breaking, notably through the emergence of self- defence groups and community police patrols during or in anticipation of strikes. The conference will also explore the role of ideologies and emotions in the generation of violence, whereby groups felt legitimized in their decisions to defend social order, state authority and economic freedom. Such actions were often simultaneously local as well as national, and national as well as international.
