Sticky Films. Conceptual and Material Explorations

Stickiness is ambiguous. Sometimes we want to avoid it, and sometimes we need it. By capturing the double meaning of film as both a medium that exists within cultural industries, and as a thin viscous layer atop something, the conceptual and material explorations of films as inherently sticky go against the assumption that current transformations in film and media culture are continuous and smooth, and rather provokes us to experience and feel them differently, even paradoxically.

We have gathered scholars from various fields to think about, with, and through these contradicting or even resisting conceptions of stickiness for the study of configurations of film and media. Our line-up brings together erratic examples of stickiness, adhesives, glue, and paste to create contact zones.

Shifting Categories of Work. Unsettling the Ways We Think about Jobs, Labor and Activities

Hybrid Book Launch and Panel Discussion in the presence of the authors

What do we do when we work? How is work organized? What are its economic, social, political, ecological and biographical effects? We cannot answer these questions without going through the multiple categories that are used to describe work, such as "skilled" work, "domestic work", "wage work", "platform work", "essential work" etc. But where do these categories come from, what is their history, how do they differ from each other? But where do these categories come from, what is their history, how do they differ from country to country and how do they evolve? Shifting Categories of Work asks these questions, highlighting the many ways in which our societies categorise work.

Asia in the mirror: self-representations, self-narratives, and perception of the other

The 21st century has been defined as the “Asian century”, a new global phase after the European and the American centuries. We invite scholars working in a range of disciplinary fields including literature, linguistics, history, and cultural studies to submit proposals pertaining, but not limited, to the following research questions: What is Asia from a cultural point of view? How has Asia represented itself in its diversity and/or to different cultures? How has Asia represented other cultures? How have other cultures represented Asia? How have contacts between Asia and other cultures shaped the continent? What is the role of postcolonial and decolonial approaches in enhancing our understanding of Asia and its entanglements?

Critical Approaches in Romani Studies and Beyond

The conference Racism, Justice, Environment : Critical Approaches in Romani Studies and Beyond is dedicated to the topic of environmental justice. People in Eastern Europe have higher chances of dying as a result of pollution than those in Western Europe. The highest rates of pollution-related deaths are in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Romania, all countries with significant Roma communities. Across Europe, numerous Roma communities live in environmentally hazardous areas. Critical Romani Studies therfore proposes a paradigm shift and challenges the dominant academic and policy discourses and suggests inquiries into forms of oppressions Roma are facing, highlighting the importance of structural forms of injustice.

From San Genuario to Europe : monasteries and water, monasteries in wetlands

The conference will examine the central role of water in the life of cenobitic centres, through general overviews across vast areas of the Continent and individual case studies, in a discourse on the longue durée, which, from the most ancient Early Medieval experiences to the development of the monastic Orders, testifies to the many and complex facets of the relationship between monasteries and water still present in the European landscape.

    Perspektiven des Realismus

    Ästhetik & Kritik VI

Back to the Real!

    Merchants, arts, luxury and beauty

The long-distance, large-scale luxury trade or the promotion of the arts by merchants are extremely important elements in the evolution of our contemporary societies. What were the legal and institutional strategies on the topic of the judicial history of commerce? Tax privileges, protection of individuals and property, are just a few examples of regulatory interventions in the European and extra-European luxury trade. The private legal sphere is no less interesting: contractual relations between individuals in this area, the regimes of pacts between parties, the value given to goods and merchandise in the identification of the price of obligations, are all aspects of fundamental importance for understanding the legal dynamics that have shaped European legal culture.

Anthropology and Social Movements Network Workshop

This two-days workshop’s theme will be “Social Movements and Citizenship”, and will have a panel discussion devoted to “E. Isin and Political Anthropology”. When conducted under the umbrella of ‘citizenship’, a significative amount of the anthropological research rests on premises which derive from philosophical works, and a significant part on Engin Isin’s theory of “Acts of citizenship”. The working hypothesis for this proposal is that many anthropologists interested by social movements, activism, “ordinary politicization” and micro-politics use Engin Isin’s notion of “acts of citizenship” and, in doing so, put to work its underlying normativities on which relies the theory’s conception of citizenship.

Digital Humanities meet Artificial Intelligence Seminar Series

DHAI Seminar Summary : Fostered by the creation of new algorithms, computation power and the development of deep learning techniques, Artificial Intelligence needs constantly to confront new issues and data sets in order to deepen its methodologies and increase its range of scientific applications. Digital humanities, developing digital science methodologies in the study of humanities and using the critical approaches of humanities in the analysis of the contemporary “digital revolutions,” are constantly in search of new tools to explore more and more complex and diversified data sets. The ambition of this seminar is to be one of the places where this coupling is shaped, fostered and analyzed. It intends to offer a forum where both communities, understood in a very inclusive way, exchange around emerging issues, ongoing projects, and past experiences in order to build a common language, a shared space, and to encourage innovative cooperation on the long run.

    Memory, Place, and Material Culture

    Placemaking and Urban Sustainability

The UK New Towns in the face of Health, Housing and Climate Challenges

The growing concern for healthy living, housing supply, and sustainability in the UK warrants a reflection on the potential contribution of New Towns (past and present) in the form of a special issue of the Journal of Urbanism. The issue will address the relationship between these contemporary challenges and the planning and housing heritage and identities of New Towns in the UK. More generally, it will focus on how the New Towns can help towards achieving sustainable development as defined by the Sustainable Development Goals set in the UN 2030 Agenda (UN, 2016): ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages (Goal 3) by making cities inclusive, sustainable and resilient (Goal 11), among other sensitive goals.
