Capturing Europe in Digital Sources: New Approaches for European Integration History?

Call for Papers 15th History of European Integration Research Society (HEIRS)

Over the last decades, calls to “provincialise” the historiography of Europe have shaped the historiographical debate and led to new perspectives on the history of European integration (Patel 2018, François and Serrier, 2017). Digital approaches might offer historians the opportunity to do just that. With the digitisation of historical materials, such as the press, historians may broaden the scope of the classical source corpus in European historiography, by relying for instance on keyword search and collecting an ample range of press articles dealing with Europe, as Florian Greiner did in 2014. To provide another example, Frédéric Clavert in his project UNSURE resorted to digitally born archives of newsgroups to analyse the discussions on Europe in the 1990s-2000s, to shed light on the opposition to the European integration outside of mass media. These examples display significant efforts to meet the challenges of European integration historiography and led us to invite young researchers and PhD students to share their research using digitised/digital sources or digital tools on European integration history: How can the digitisation of sources and digital tools help face the challenge of ‘capturing Europe’?

They allow us to assess the acoustic capacities of artefacts and to reconstruct the soundscapes of Antiquity. Bronze (and more generally metals), but also wood or terracotta have their own logic, and they raise a set of questions (conservation, restoration, lifespan, sound range).

The French-British Study Planning Group / Groupe franco-britannique de recherche en aménagement et urbanisme, has worked for 20 years on the building of networks and intellectual bridges between the communities of planning research and practice on both sides of the Channel. Since 2005 it has been formally constituted as a sub-group of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP). The potential retreat of the current United Kingdom from the European Union presents a new context and it is natural that the group should turn its attention to the territorial impacts which could arise as a result. It is also an occasion to reflect more widely on all forms of territorial discontinuities, ruptures and borders, including those at the national, regional and local scales, and which are of concern to planning research and practice.

The Summer School will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the Conference, to attend workshops directed by specialists in their fields. Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

The Public Sphere and the Politics of Space

With the gradual rise of socio-economic and political challenges facing the Middle East and North African (MENA) and the Sub-Saharan regions, the “public space” and the “public sphere” have come to the forefront of scholarly debates and research by scholars in various fields of studies. The concept of the “public sphere” was conceived as part of the interplay of first a physical locale that imply constant social relationships in a concrete public domain (public space) and second the constellations of socio-economic factors contributing to the rise of political debates (public sphere). The aim of this conference is to probe social, economic, political problems via the theoretical lenses of the public sphere, the different aspects of spatial configurations, the politics of space, as well as the counter-public or parallel discursive arenas as conceived by Nancy Fraser.

Diasporas, charity and the construction of belonging

A connected history of practices of ‘goodwill’ in Egypt during the imperial age (19th–20th centuries)

Egypt was a space of circulation in the 19th and 20th centuries; a pole of attraction for migrants from Europe and around the Mediterranean. Numerous individuals from Ottoman provinces choose it as a place of exile. Greeks, Italians and Maltese, to name the most numerous groups, swelled the ranks of populations of European origin, which was chiefly concentrated in urban centres. Numerous institutions and charities were created to support these mobile populations. A space of rivalry between different actors (consulates, associations, missionaries, philanthropists, etc), charity in the context of diaspora/diasporic communities/groups has not been sufficiently studied. Inspired by recent works in connected history, this workshop aims to approach charity from a relational perspective, through a comparison of the discourses on and the practices of ‘goodwill’ implemented by different groups.

Artistic, Digital, and Political Creation in English-Speaking African Countries

Africa 2020

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. Even if this cultural focus cannot be abstracted from a broader geopolitical agenda marred by controversial presidential declarations, it nevertheless has the potential to offer a somewhat different coverage of the continent. One can only hope that it avoids the temptation to officially “curate into being” “exceptional” artists (Dovey), tapping into the all-too-familiar image of Africa as “the supreme receptacle of the West’s obsession with, and circular discourse about, the facts of ‘absence,’ ‘lack,’ and ‘non-being,’ of identity and difference” (Mbembe).

In 2018 the international conference “History and Its Images”, organized by the Department of Art History of the European University at St. Petersburg, was dedicated to Francis Haskell’s seminal book of the same title, which greatly influenced the study of the visualization of the past. In 2020 we will host a second conference on the representation of the past in the arts and visual culture. Among the questions to be discussed are: how the visuals art and visual culture produce images of the past, how these images were perceived by the different communities and how they were transformed by the national context of their production.

Crisis and infrastructures: responses to change between materiality and immateriality

A dialogue between Anthropology, Geography and History

The purpose of the conference is to explore the interactions between crised and infrastructures starting from a pivotal question: is it possibile to consider transitional processes as moments of "a transformazion that includes some essential elements of the previous phase?" (Pombeni 2013: 12) Or are they to be intended just as a dramatic interruptions and breaks? PhD Students, Post-Docs and Research Fellows of historical, geographical and anthropological training are invited to partecipate in the construction of a moment of dialogue and excange. The aim is to stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion that will encompass all historiographical epochs, from antiquity to the present day, and question not only the role of infrastructure in the resolution of crises, but also the various implications of critical moments and of their conception.

Although unquestionably all-pervasive within the history of modern and contemporary press, the ‘review form’ has been to present an understudied practice. In fact, this multi-faceted, cross-disciplinary form that has persistently accompanied the different phases in the evolution of “print-capitalism” has hardly been analysed from a theoretical perspective. This dismissal by the academic world is certainly peculiar, if not manifestly contradictory; however, it significantly testifies of the difficulty of investigating such a slippery object of study critically.

Thinking the future of work in agriculture

IInd International Symposium on Work in Agriculture

1.3 billion people work in agriculture, the sector representing 25 % of the total employment in the world. Work in agriculture faces continuities, such as i) the ongoing model of a dominant family-based activity but also with a high contribution of wage earners to the work (42 % of farmworkers are salaried); ii) the large diversity of work contents due to the various production systems (vegetables, crops, indoor or outdoor livestock, etc.) and to the various models of work organization (taylorism, cooperation, externalization of tasks). iii) the more and more meaningful contribution of migrants to farm work particularly in many OECD countries; iv) the end of ignorance of the negative impacts of chemicals on workers’ health ; v) the consolidation of global chains and its reflects on work and labor governance; vi) the use of new technologies (robots, sensors, internet) that modify work rhythms, workload and the skills required under the paradigm of Agricultures 4.0.
