  Women and the Writing of History in Early Modern Britain and France

  Women as Witnesses to History

  La première journée d’étude consacrée à l’écriture de l’histoire au début de l’époque moderne en France et en Angleterre (6 juin 2009) a montré que l’activité des femmes dans les genres historiques dominants que sont la chronique, l’historiographie officielle, l’histoire religieuse, l’histoire politique est à la fois ponctuelle et discontinue. Cependant, même si les femmes n’écrivent pas l’histoire comme les hommes, leur présence sur la scène de l’histoire, ou au contact de ceux qui la font, les autorise à livrer des récits précis sur le passé proche. Ces spectatrices engagées, prêtes à souffrir au nom de la vérité qu’elles décrivent, sont les auteurs d’importants témoignages que cette seconde journée voudrait examiner.

  Neighbourhood and urban government in Western cities, from the Early Modern period to present

  Tenth International Conference on Urban History

  Les politiques urbaines ont aujourd’hui tendance à se centrer sur le quartier comme unité d’intervention ; celui-ci est ainsi souvent perçu comme le principe organisateur du développement social urbain. En cherchant à renforcer la présence des centres sociaux, des conseils de quartier, en développant la police de proximité et en encourageant les citadins à s’organiser autour de projets comme le « neighbourhood watch », les autorités locales entendent améliorer la qualité de vie urbaine et consolider la cohésion sociale. Ce faisant, les concepteurs des politiques publiques reprennent à leur compte la notion de quartier, telle qu’elle a été définie par les sciences sociales – unité socio-spatiale cohérente – et espèrent pouvoir à leur tour susciter le développement du lien social dans la ville. Ces politiques posent dès lors la question de la nature même du « quartier », entre concept administratif lié à un projet politique et unité urbaine mouvante, informelle et extrêmement personnelle telle qu’elle est vécue par les usagers.

  Society and Politics in South-Eastern Europe during the 19th century

  There has always been a negative image attached to South-Eastern European politics and polities and rarely has it been widely acknowledged (Mazower) that the process of state formation in the region was not just a pale and gruesome caricature of Western European models but rather a complicated affair involving juggling with various institutional models (local as well as imported ones), coping with societies of a sometimes inextricable ethnoreligious diversity and varying degrees of political allegiance to central power, dealing with foreign interference and tampering. 19th century visitors of the region contributed a lot to this negative image which still clings to the region (Todorova) and culturalists still like to refer back to the 19th c. as the genealogical matrix of all the region’s evils.

  Perspectives on a European Social, Cultural, and Protest History of the 1980s

  On May 6th 1980, a group of new recruits was publicly sworn in with the German Bundeswehr in the Bremen soccer stadium. As a reaction, street battles of hitherto unknown dimensions between left-wing activists and (military) police took place in the area near the stadium. Since the conflicts surrounding the newly built nuclear power plant of Brokdorf a couple of years earlier, a certain "tradition" of militant mass protest had already existed. Yet with the so-called "Bremen Bundeswehr riots" for the first time protests of a comparable scale took place within a bigger city. Viewed in the following years as the beginning of the German autonomous movement, this inner city riot marked at the same time a European phenomenon.

  Ce colloque est l’occasion de faire le point sur les représentations de l’archéologue et de l’archéologie dans les médias. L’analyse de la presse écrite et audiovisuelle (radio, cinéma, documentaire) et de la littérature (roman, bande dessinée, etc.) seront autant d’axes pour comprendre la perception de l’archéologue dans notre société, dans les supports médiatiques en eux-mêmes ou auprès des publics qui reçoivent ces discours. Deux perspectives sont principalement envisagées : les fictions et les médias vulgarisateurs, même si des ponts peuvent évidemment être établis entre les deux.

  Tenth International Conference on urban History, Ghent 1st-4th September 2010

  Recent research on migrant communities has witnessed a clear shift towards a more sophisticated understanding of the variety of bonds that link minority groups to the society they live in, as well as to their places of origins. Yet, when it comes to the understanding of past migrations, historical discourse still depends in many ways on traditional categories of analysis, that often poorly reflect the profound originality of the situations under study. This session is an attempt to challenge traditional and “ready-to-go” views on the organization of community life among migrants who lived in the Mediterranean port-cities during the late modern period (17th to 19th centuries).

  A mesure qu'ils découvrent et rencontrent des peuples nouveaux au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, les Anglais sont conduits à s'interroger en retour sur leur propre identité. C'est la question du dialogue entre le soi et l'autre, celle de la perception de l'altérité, et de la construction d'une identité nationale par le jeu du regard, de la mise en miroir ou de l'opposition que ce numéro spécial de la revue LISA e-journal se propose d'explorer. Il s'agira notamment d'étudier la façon dont se déploient l'imaginaire de l'identité et celui de l'altérité dans la littérature et les arts visuels aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Tous les types d'approche théorique sont les bienvenus.

  Les mythes de fondation et l’Europe

  Le colloque organisé par le Centre Georges Chevrier, l’Université de Bourgogne, le CNRS et Sciences Po entend réunir juristes, politistes, littéraires, philosophes afin d’envisager le problème crucial de la fondation de l’Europe institutionnelle. Cela à un moment où l’actualité politique européenne nous montre à quel point le lien nécessaire entre l’Europe et les Européens s’étiole, s’il a jamais existé. Il ne s’agit pas, bien sûr, de tenter de mythologiser l’Europe. Il s’agit plutôt, grâce à une « mythique concrète » (P. Ricœur), de revenir aux mythes d’origine pour comprendre comment se fabrique le pouvoir occidental. Nous pourrons alors espérer mieux percevoir les forces et faiblesses de l’Europe juridique et politique d’aujourd’hui et au bout du compte sonder sa fragilité ontologique. Cette recherche doit nous conduire d’abord à réfléchir sur la nature et la fonction des mythes de fondation, notamment à travers l’étude du système mythique romain. Elle nous amènera ensuite à revenir sur la question impériale et celle des racines chrétiennes de l’Europe. Enfin, elle nous poussera à explorer d’autres expériences occidentales (les USA) ou orientales (la Chine).

  The Western Society for French History

  Founded in 1974, the Western Society for French History seeks to promote the study of French and Francophone history. Its international membership includes university faculty and graduate students, independent scholars and amateur historians in the general public from across the United States and Canada, as well as from France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and many other countries. Drawing inspiration from the frontier spirit of the North American West, it brings together specialists in the study of France and French culture from a wide variety of interdisciplinary backgrounds, beginning with history, but also embracing literary studies, art and music history, as well as political theory, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. Since its formation, it has encouraged the exploration of French history through an openness to new methods of research, while also continuing to support more traditional fields of interest.
