  The Aesthetics and Politics of Irony

  After the tragedy of 9/11 in the West and the crisis of socialism in the East, the overriding ironic tone that had pervaded the 80s and 90s has begun to withdraw from the aesthetic and socio-political scenes. The last decades have witnessed an increasing celebration of affects and emotions, a return of authenticity and the real, and the birth of a “new sincerity”. This backlash against ironic alienation or “cynical reason” hopes to replace playfulness, shallowness and negativity for an ethos of commitment, sensitivity and integrity. Nevertheless, these attempts could easily turn out to be rhetorical or ironic. The present book seeks to address, on one hand, the impulse of and the resistance to irony in today’s artistic, cultural and political discourses and practices. On the other hand, given that ironic attitudes and expressions in late modernity are anticipated in German idealism, constituting as such a Romantic possibility, we welcome reflections on modern irony at large.

  Academic entrepreneurship in History

  An international survey of current research

  The Departments of History of Universiteit Gent, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Université Lille 3 and Università di Bologna are jointly organizing the international conference “Academic entrepreneurship in history” on 12-13 March 2015 at the STAM city museum in Ghent, Belgium. The aim of the meeting is to bring together an international group of scholars engaged in research on the notion and practice of academic entrepreneurship from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The focus will be on the range of actions, behaviors and qualities of academic scientists and their employing institutions which can be seen as entrepreneurial in at least one of the many senses in which the entrepreneurship term has been used in the economics and business history literatures.

  Visual Analysis with Digital Tools

  Göttingen Center for Digital Humanities (GCDH) International Summer School 2014

  The Digital Humanities enhance the methods of traditional research in the humanities through automated data acquisition and processing. Visualisations can play a central role in analysing such data. This Summer School will address a set of fundamental problems, such as requirements for scientific visualisation or visual strategies. The main goal, however, is to focus on the practical side to enable the participants to tackle specific visualisation problems in order to advance their own research. The natural sciences have a long tradition of interest in visualisation methods (just compare magazines like "Science" or "Nature" to any magazine with a humanities background). The humanities are catching up, though, and starting to apply visualisation techniques to answer their own research questions. A set of tools has emerged in recent years and has introduced a number of visualisation practices into the humanities. Charts, graphics, 3D visualisations or "Maps, Graphs, Trees" (to quote the title of a well-known recent book on the subject), should not only illustrate, but also create new knowledge. Only then can we call visualisations a true method in the Digital Humanities.

  Regional producers or global players? The internationalization of companies in the 19th and 20th centuries

  An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers.   “Purity” and “Impurity” establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2^nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - “cleanliness of blood”).

  New Perspectives on Global Environmental Images

  The international conference proposes to mobilise a broad variety of perspectives from a large disciplinary spectrum in order to analyse the strategies and imaginaries that are connected to the production, the circulation and the power of global environmental images. From icons of the environmental movement over expert graphics mobilised by the IPCC to satellite imagery, global environmental images form the sensory basis of our understanding of the planetary processes that govern the “Anthropocene”. The images all actively participate, at very different scales, in our interpretation and understanding of the changes of the Earth system as well as the consequences we closely associate to global climate change. As true mediators between different publics and cultures, between global processes and local impacts, new critical enquiries into global environmental images propose a highly fruitful discussion of the complex relationship between science, society, politics and nature.

  The Role of Women in Work and Society

  French historians are concerned by women’s history since thirty years, but studies are manly dealing with the Occident. For the ancient Near East, there is now a great deal of limited studies on women and gender history, but few syntheses. Furthermore, economic history is well represented in Assyriology, thanks to the good preservation of dozen of thousands of clay tablets recording administrative operations, contracts and acts dealing with family law. Despite these voluminous sources, the topic of work has not been much addressed. The thirty participants of this conference will examine the various economic occupations involving women, in a gender perspective, over the three millennia of Near Eastern history.

  Architecture and liturgy: design autonomy and standards

  The second International Seminar offers a new stage of critical reflection on the relationship between the liturgical and ecclesiastical guidelines offered by the Second Vatican Council and church architecture, and propose a reflection on what the terms of dialogue and the interdependence between architecture and liturgy are. The dogmatic constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium is a fundamentally important document in the Church's struggle for renewal with immediate and obvious repercussions on the architectural questions concerning the construction and organization of the celebratory space. Therefore, this Seminar is intended as an occasion to compare and propose various ways of seeing and experiencing the relationship between autonomy and the standard applied to the architectural design, in reference to conciliar liturgical instances.
