Stories and Storytelling: a World of Stories

"Higher Institute of Human Sciences of Jendouba" Conference

Roland Barthes asserts that stories are universal and can be told in all media. From the earliest oral traditions to today's multimedia extravaganzas, the importance of storytelling remains paramount. As storytelling creatures, humans are shaped through their stories as “man is in his actions and practice, as well as in his fictions, essentially a story-telling animal” (MacIntyre). Storytelling is the art of conveying ideas, experiences and emotions through narratives. Through its evolution from an oral form to written, visual, and digital forms, storytelling has always been a fundamental method of communication for humans. Storytelling represents a nexus between culture studies, literature, and linguistics, as not only does it reflect cultural identities and values but also makes use of linguistic structures and literary techniques to convey complex narratives that shape our understanding of the world.

    Crises and Preaching

Lexis, framing, timings, 19th‒21st century in the Middle East

Is preaching consubstantial with crisis? Did the different religious traditions present in the Middle East come to grip with the notion of crisis during the contemporary period? This workshop examines the similarities and divergences between preaching endeavours by the different religious traditions and the transformations in religious discourse in the Middle East from the end of the 19th century onwards. Through a comparative and diachronic analysis, it aims to identify what "constitutes a crisis" for particular religious actors at a given moment in the contemporary history of the Middle East (e.g. military defeat, feelings of inferiority vis-à-vis Europe, demographic decline of a given religious group, secularisation of institutions, rise of atheism, etc.)

    Art and ethics

This new issue aims at exploring the relationship between Art and Ethics. One of the reasons is that Ethics has been the great absentee in the discussion about climate change. Why is it important to be involved? What are the ethical considerations behind getting involved? How about environmental justice? Many topics that are connected to Ethics. But we want to explore Ethics from an artistic point-of-view: How do artists/artworks contribute to the ethical debate? Is there an ethical way to create art? Can ethics be the main inspiration of art practices? Can art be a ferment for ethics? Can art show the way to society?

Ordinary writings: writing and reading practices in domestic and public spaces

Living in a ‘written society’ means not only that social relations and the organisation of personal life are structured by the written word, but also that the written word is omnipresent in our environment and that we live in spaces saturated by a multiplicity of written documents, the production and reception of which shape our everyday activities. The aim of this congress is to examine the way in which ordinary written documents help to build and maintain a shared society.

International Conference on Arts & Crafts and Design - CIMAD

Tomorrow, a distant horizon, is a mixture of uncertainties and promises of change; today is a time for experimentation, transition, improvement and creation; yesterday is an infinite memory of experience and achievements. The papers in this symposium put modern and diverse craft practices into perspective as they evolve (Braunstein-Kriegel and Petiot, 2019), drawing their wisdom from past experiences handed down over generations.

Labour and health of undocumented migrant women: condition, trends, critical issues

The primary objective of this Frontiers Research Topic is to produce a comprehensive understanding of the working conditions, health status, and acts of resistance among undocumented migrant women. By investigating these elements, the research intends to explore the intersections of labour and health inequalities imposed on these women due to their undocumented statuses and their positioning within the lower strata of global labour hierarchies. Moreover, it seeks to address the broader societal impacts of these conditions and propose potential pathways for improving their lives and labour conditions.

    Youth intimacies

Epistemologies and methodologies in Britain and in France

At a time when the social sciences are taking an increasing interest in the field of the private sphere and intimacy in relationships, the aim of the symposium is to bring together specialists whose work in France and the UK has enriched our knowledge of young people’s intimacy. Using examples of projects on love, sexual and parental relationships, the aim of this symposium is to examine, in a reflective and comparative way, the different theoretical and methodological approaches underpinning research. Definitions, theories and tools (demographic surveys, qualitative interviews as well as visual, narrative and performative methods) and their cultural and institutional contexts, will be explored in order to discuss the production of knowledge in the two countries.

From Revolution to Exile: Arab Diaspora Politics in a Post-2011 Context

The American sociologist, Roger Brubaker critiques the overuse of "diaspora" as a static concept, likening it instead to a fluid "category of practice, project, claim and stance." Furthermore, the literature recognizes diasporas primarily as transnational communities with multiple societal affiliations and identities. However, recent political upheavals, like the 2010-2011 Arab uprisings, have thrust Middle Eastern and North African diasporas into new contentious and repressive dynamics, highlighting their changing roles and challenges, often referred to as the "Diaspora Spring". The proposed one-day international conference aims to delve into these complexities, focusing on empirical case studies from the MENA region post-2011 to explore innovative political roles and strategies developed by diasporas in navigating their multifaceted identities and engagements in a post-uprising world.

Interspecies interactions in the (visual) arts (1550-1914). Collaborations, experimentations, oppositions

This symposium proposes to study how artists have not only observed animals and, in some cases, lived alongside them, but have also sometimes attributed agency to them. The idea of an active relationship between the artist and the animal raises fundamental questions about the role of animals in artistic production. The analysis of artistic practices allows for questioning the nature of the bond between humans and other animals, and examining how, in certain works, the animal can be perceived as a protagonist capable of resisting attempts at reification. Rather than being a mere reflection of power relations between humans and animals, artistic creation thus becomes a site of negotiation, even contestation, of these relationships.

Social Histories and Sociologies of the Military Uniform

The workshop aims to study and discuss selected issues related to the history of the modern military uniform. Uniforms are an important research area of military historians and an object of interest of numerous enthusiasts, including non-academic authors and researchers. Despite a large number of publications about army clothing, only a few of them employ the social perspective or deal with the cultural meaning of uniforms. Therefore, we would like to bring attention to those understudied research areas of military history, historical anthropology and sociology.

    Decolonizing comparison

Trans-Indigenous readings of contemporary literature from Canada and the rest of the Americas

The aim of this international workshop on contemporary Indigenous literatures and literary practices in Canada and the rest of the Americas is twofold. Firstly, it lies in exploring the (potential or already existing) implications and applications of the trans-Indigenous comparative methodology proposed by Chadwick Allen in his book Trans-Indigenous: Methodologies for Global Native Literary Studies. The second aim of this workshop is to create a space in which the growing number of researchers in Indigenous studies (including doctoral and postdoctoral researchers), both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, can share their knowledge and reflect together on the possibility of contributing to the development and the consolidation of this field through the collective construction of a critical practice of trans-American Indigenous literary studies research.

Working Group on ‘Risk, Health, and State Socialism: Central and Eastern Europe, 1950s-1980s’

While much of this historiography has focused on liberal democracies, less attention has been given to how concepts of risk operated in state socialist contexts. Building on recent studies in the history of medicine and health, we invite scholars to join a working group examining risk, health, and medicine under state socialism in Central and Eastern Europe. To what extent did state socialist regimes recognize certain health and medical issues as ‘governable’ through risk? What kinds of practices and ideas emerged in response? And were there differences or similarities between state socialist and liberal democratic models of risk in healthcare and medicine? Our aim is to take an exploratory approach to discuss whether, and in what contexts, the concept of risk can be applied to state socialism, and to examine the risk-related practices, ideas, and technologies observed in healthcare and medicine in state socialism.
