  Populating: the elusive category of urban policies?

  Le peuplement, entendu comme action, plus ou moins délibérée et formalisée, consistant à intervenir sur la répartition spatiale des groupes sociaux, fait figure d’enjeu saillant autant qu’insaisissable des politiques urbaines actuelles ou plus anciennes. L’objectif de ce colloque est de faire le bilan des connaissances internationales sur le sujet et d’identifier les chantiers de recherche en cours et à venir afin d’analyser la façon dont le peuplement est construit comme objectif et enjeu des politiques urbaines, dans des contextes sociaux, historiques et politiques distincts. Autrement dit, il s’agit d’appréhender le peuplement à la fois comme politique(s) et comme catégorie(s) d’action publique, en confrontant à travers ce prisme des travaux qui ne le sont pas habituellement, soit parce qu’ils portent sur des terrains et des époques éloignés, soit parce qu’ils sont issus de disciplines différentes (géographie, science politique, sociologie, urbanisme, histoire, etc.).

  Internment, Incarceration and Detention

  Captivation histories in Europe around the First and Second World War

  On 3 and 4 November the NIOD, Institute for for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies will organize a workshop in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) on "Internment, Incarceration and Detention. Captivation histories in Western Europe around the First and Second World War". The workshop seeks to explore the historical practice of incarcerating enemies of the (former) regime, the changes that occur in the existing penal system by doing so, the emergence of new types of correctional institutions and their practical implementation in imprisonment cultures. Different types of prisons should be considered, the most important being: the regular prisons, internment camps and different types of concentration camps (not the extermination camps).

Cette journée d’étude sera l’occasion d’entendre des chercheurs canadiens et européens s’interroger sur les modalités de l’émergence des sociomatérialités organisationnelles, mettre concrètement en évidence les interactions et les processus constitutifs de l’organisation ainsi que l’improbable dialogique entre destruction et création comme fondements de l’innovation organisationnelle.

  Representing Animals in Britain

  La question de la ou des représentation(s) des animaux dans les îles Britanniques évoque d’emblée plusieurs éléments majeurs de la tradition et de l'histoire récente du pays : les gravures de Hogarth en 1751, la création de la Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals en 1824, les écrits de Locke, de Bentham sur le statut de l’animal, les travaux de Darwin sur les espèces, ou encore le débat contemporain sur l’expérimentation animale ou l’élevage intensif. Il semble que les Britanniques aient accordé une grande place aux animaux dans leurs arts, leur pensée, leurs loisirs, leurs sciences, et leur vie quotidienne. Cependant, l’idée que nos voisins d’outre-Manche aiment beaucoup les animaux révèle-elle quelque chose de profond dans la culture de ce pays, ou bien n'est-elle qu'un cliché que les Britanniques se plaisent à colporter ? C’est à cette question que nous souhaiterions répondre.

  The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art (circa 1500—1980). The winning manuscript submission should advance understanding of American art and demonstrate new findings and original perspectives. It will be translated and published in American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s scholarly journal, which will also cover the cost of image rights and reproductions, and the winner will receive a $500 award.

  What future for Greater Cairo?

  In partnership with NVIC-Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo and with the support of Cultures France (“Fonds D’Alembert 2010”), the idea of the workshop organized at CEDEJ (MAEE / CNRS) - Cairo is to work on the issue of hyper-densities in the metropolitan context and exchange between researchers, experts and decision makers, taking in account that the trend is an increasing growth and urbanization of the planet, especially in the capitals of developing countries. The objective will be linked on how to plan and organize the metropolitan urban contexts of hyper-density. As such, the case of Cairo will be the focus of attention in connection with the strategy "Greater Cairo 2050” developed by the Egyptian authorities and put in perspective with metropolises of North and South.

  This program will assist students to prepare for dissertation research on topics related to Bridging, Bonding and Bordering: Migrant Strategies and State Policies through participation in a conference of field experts, two training workshops, and summer research under the mentorship of Professors Virginie Guiraudon (CNRS, Political Science) and Rubén Hernández-León (UCLA, Sociology).   Le processus d’intégration européenne s’est déroulé dans un contexte international caractérisé par la présence d’un réseau d’organisations de coopération multilatérale, avec lesquelles les Communautés européenne ont interagi depuis les années cinquante, en concluant de nombreux accords de collaboration. Or, si l’interaction avec des organismes régionaux tels que l’OECE/OCDE, le Conseil d’Europe ou l’OTAN, a été étudiée de façon relativement approfondie, les relations avec le système des Nations Unies avec son ensemble d’agences spécialisées, de Fonds, programmes et instituts, sont beaucoup moins connues.
