  Observation in the clinic, testing in the laboratory, curve-tracing machines: we may think we know how physicians know. We don’t. That is because we have, until recently, ignored the primary medium in which medical knowledge occurs, namely, writing and its organisation andreorganisation on paper. Written patient records are almost as old as medicine itself and still central to its practice. Remarkably unexamined is how these have generated knowledge. The project aims to address a question of interest for understanding science, technology and medicine in the broadest sense: How are generalizations drawn from particulars? Keytechniques appear to be those of mastering on paper. These are shared across clinical, natural historical, pedagogical, forensic, accounting, administrative and other activity. To learn how paper technology works and how this has shaped knowledge over time, to show how human beings know and deal with the physical world through operations of pen and paper: theproject aims to contribute to this wider goal through its focus on medicine.

  L’habitat collectif autogéré : choix ou contrainte ?

  Ce colloque international a pour objectif de faire connaître les pratiques et les travaux de recherche sur les initiatives des habitants qui créent des logements collectifs en Europe. Cette rencontre réunira des sensibilités très différentes, en particulier, des chercheurs, des praticiens et des résidents. Ces projets, souvent écologiques, s’avèrent être une application concrète du développement spatial durable et opèrent comme une réponse cohérente et inédite aux orientations politiques actuelles en matière de développement économique et social. L’efficacité de ces forces créatives invite à interroger la reproductibilité de ces expériences à une échelle plus large. Ces mouvements d’auto-organisation sont-ils une réponse aux défaillances de la production de l’habitat par l’Etat et par le marché du logement? Participent-ils à une amélioration de la qualité urbaine ?

Articulant études de cas de diffusion et réflexions méthodologiques sur la mesure des impacts sociaux et territoriaux, ce séminaire porte prioritairement sur l'Amérique latine, mais est ouvert à des contributions d'autres continents. Il se tiendra à Porto Alegre du 23 au 24 août 2012 (Brésil).

  Nouvelles Vues est à la recherche de contributions originales pouvant enrichir son premier numéro dédié à la culture visuelle populaire et à ce qui est communément appelé le « pré-cinéma ». Il ne s’agira pas de voir comment ces pratiques et dispositifs préparent le cinéma, mais bien de réfléchir aux liens complexes et multiples qui existent entre ces différentes formations culturelles. Les contributions rassemblées au sein de ce numéro pourront aborder l’évolution du paysage médiatique jusqu’au tournant du 20e siècle au Québec, ou encore les relations entre les pratiques associées à la culture visuelle populaire et celles relevant des « vues animées » (jusqu’en 1915).

Scholars planning a longer research stay abroad have until 15 June 2012 to apply to the Gerda Henkel Foundation for a Marie Curie Fellowship. In the context of its M4HUMAN programme (“Mobility for experienced researchers in historical humanities and Islamic studies”), the Foundation’s Office welcomes applications detailing research plans in the field of the historical humanities or on a topic within the special research programme “Islam, the modern nation state and transnational movements” supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

  Cadernos de Estudos Africanos temático:

  The journal Cadernos de Estudos Africanos seeks contributions for a thematic issue on the African presence in contemporary Portuguese society. We start from a broad understanding of this sizeable populace, comprising not only people born in Africa or those who have lived there but also their descendants who identify themselves as Africans, Afro-Portuguese or retornados, irrespective of their nationality. Our aim is thus to portray a large and heterogeneous population (regarding the countries they come from, and the diversity of life courses, ethnic loyalties and cultural references) that nonetheless shares Africa as a common geographical reference. These groups include, but are certainly not limited to, the so-called second generation of African immigrants and those who have returned from the former colonies. In the Portugal of today, a person’s African heritage, or a prolonged residence in Africa, tend to be significant biographical elements, in addition to being key markers of a social and cultural alterity that is often racialized.

  Special issue of Méditerranée (2014)

  This special issue will look at the climatic, environmental and social dimensions of the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Mediterranean, between the second half of the 13th to 19th centuries. Contributions should derive from the Meditterranean area, including its mountainous borders, and can include sedimentary and palaeoecological records, in addition to written and iconographic sources. The editors particularly encourage multidisciplinary studies.

  While contemporary grumblings about hospital food have become the quintessential hospital complaint, it is undeniable that a clean, warm bed, rest and the provision of food and drink, rather than medicines and therapies have always greatly increased hospital patients’ chances of recovery. Indeed diet has from the time of Galen been a central part of medical therapy. However, even if central to the day-to-day routine of hospitals, workhouses and asylums, food and drink continue to be overlooked in historical accounts of hospitalisation. This conference aims to foreground the role of food and drink in health care institutions in the past.
