Order into Action

How large-scale concepts of world-order determine practices in the premodern world?

The conference “Order into Action” asks if political, geographical or religious large-scale concepts constituted the basic elements of systems of world order and how those concepts were translated into concrete actions or practices. In order to include a comparative view on regions and cultures, the confereince combines the perspectives of scholars in European, Arabic and Islamic and Asian Studies, as well as outlooks on premodern societies in (sub-saharan) Africa, the Americas and Australia.

Rereading Aristotle, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and Demetrius through the lens of contemporary narratology provides scholarship with a potentially fruitful perspective for investigating the relationship between historical narrative and other forms of literature. In particular, the reflections of Dionysius and Demetrius on narrative style at the micro-level, as well as those of Aristotle on history and tragedy as ways of representing knowledge at the macro-level, might enable historians and comparatists to focus on the question of how pan-European historical narratives are related to the drama of their times.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Charles C. Eldredge Prize. Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a letter (not to exceed one page in length) explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Nominations by authors or publishers for their own books will not be considered.

Fourth Annual Conference of the International Federation for Public History

History is a public issue. Historical knowledge and practice is not limited to academic settings. History is also produced and shared in a wide range of settings by professional and non-professional historians alike. Museums and other exhibiting places, films and documentaries, historical novels, anniversaries and commemorations, re-enactments and living history, public policies, transitional justice commissions, television, radio, websites, and social media, are some of the venues in which history comes alive. All these settings stimulate interaction and collaboration with large audiences, turning historians into public historians.

Reading History in Antiquity

Audience-Oriented Perspectives on Classical Historiography

The 21^st century could justifiably be deemed an era highly fertile for the examination of ancient readership of classical historiography. This is because the last decades have contributed to the liberation of modern scholarship from the nineteenth-century positivism’s persistence in scrutinizing the “objectivity” of ancient historians and seeing them mostly as the celebrated exemplars of critical acumen and scientific conscientiousness. On the contrary, if we try to summarize the prevailing modern perspectives on classical historiography, we may refer to the analysis of the ancient historians’ view of the nature of the historical development, their goals in preserving the past by writing history, the literary qualities of ancient historical accounts, and the techniques the ancient historians used in order to disseminate certain ideological and interpretive messages and to create specific emotions in their readers.

A Revolução de Outubro de 1917 foi um dos acontecimentos históricos mais relevantes da época contemporânea. A sua importância pode ser compreendida, por um lado, na sequência de outras revoluções – desde logo, a Revolução Francesa de 1789 – e da emergência do movimento operário no século XIX. Por outro, 1917 foi também um momento inaugural do século XX, antecedendo eventos como a Revolução Chinesa ou a viragem pós-colonial. No centésimo aniversário da Revolução de Outubro, o Instituto de História Contemporânea da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e os centros de investigação que a ele se juntam para o efeito realizam um congresso internacional dedicado ao estudo e debate da Revolução de Outubro e suas implicações.

Research Chair (Team leader positions), Initiative of Excellence of the University of Bordeaux

The Initiative of Excellence of the University of Bordeaux (IdEx Bordeaux) is opening up research chair positions for young scientists. The program will support young, high-profile international researchers in setting up a research team to develop their own project within one of Bordeaux’s laboratories. These positions are funded for a period of 3-years. Applications are open to all scientific fields. However, IdEx Bordeaux is built on a number of scientific priorities and proposals in these areas or at the interfaces between them will be examined with particular attention. The Transatlantic Embrace: Spanish Civil War in America’s Intimate Distance

Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.

Cosmopolitanismes urbains : questions méthodologiques et théoriques

This worshop seeks to investigate cosmopolitanism through an urban lens. It aims to provide a situated approach to cosmopolitanism, using the analytical framework of urban and social theory alongside social geography and building upon empirical research. Our purpose is to frame a grounded theory of urban cosmopolitanism that would take the paradigms and empirical findings of various social sciences into account. Our interest lies in a cosmopolitanism of encounters incarnated in contacts, mobilities and cultural consumption and the spatial dimension of the social and power relations that are at stake in cosmopolitan encounters. We shall focus on cities as sites, but also actors in processes of cosmopolitanisation.
