50 years that changed the world. Translation in the 1st half of the 20th century

8th international colloquium on Translation Studies in Portugal

The 1st half of the 20th century changed perceptions of identity (class, gender, language, race), transformed the experience of affiliation and belonging (the sense of belonging to a place, to a language, to a culture), emphasized differences and the need for mediation. This conference wishes to address and rethink the role translations and translators have played in the de/re/trans/formation of the 'age of extremes' (Hobsbawm).

Property Rights, Land and Territory in the European Overseas Empires

For the most part, the study of the occupation of territories, the rule over land and the definition of property rights, either de jure or de facto, in European overseas empires, has been pursued in a piecemeal fashion, either by disciplinary fields, empires or regions of the world, thus overlooking their interconnections. How can we compare the way issues of land, territory and property rights were dealt with across a variety of empires (e.g. Portuguese, Spanish, British, Dutch, French) and their different geographies? What can different branches of scholarship (from legal, economic, political, social and cultural history) offer each other? This conference aims to provide answers to these questions, by bringing these previously separate studies together into a common forum and setting them in comparative perspective.

    Co-Ethnics as Unwanted Others

Intra-Group Tensions After the Fall of Communism: Causes, Consequences, and Contexts

Much has been written about the intricacies of acceptance and integration of immigrants who are racial, ethnic and/or confessional ‘others’ in relation to host populations. There are many examples of co-ethnics’ interaction which are overtly or latently accompanied by intra-group conflict, tension and misunderstanding, but academic coverage of co-ethnics’ encounters is far less ‘mature’ in terms of conceptualization, and literature devoted to these issues is far less abundant. The pattern of peoples' interaction being studied is usually a result of various kinds of population movement provoked by serious socio-political cataclysms in the 20th and 21st centuries, including the collapse of multi-national states and the intensification of labor migration resulting from post-socialist economic transformation. Our aim is to bring together international scholars who could present results of their latest research on these topics, preferably from a comparative and/or micro-level perspective.

    Re-Imagining democracy in the Mediterranean

    Insurgency, regeneration and nation-building (1750-1860)

Historians have applied the terms ‘democracy’ and ‘democrat’ to the past in their own ways and for their own purposes. We want to get behind historians’ usages and develop an understanding of how contemporaries used the term and its cognates. Who talked about ‘democracy’ and its cognates in Italy at this time? To refer to what? What did it connote?  To what extent was it used to talk about institutions, or about political culture, or about social phenomena? How was usage affected by the word’s classical inheritance and connotations, to what extent by the French revolution or other modern developments? Who called whom a democrat? Who positively identified with the cause of democracy – and why?  In what social milieux was the term used – did it have any popular currency? Within what larger semantic field did it operate? How did patterns of use vary by region and change over time?

On the Dynamics of Production focuses on the production processes and the interplay between notions of distraction and interference as well as their traces in different media objects. The conference program includes presentations on various topics connected to the research subject, including discussions on the role of distraction in the artistic production processes, the resistance of the material and the difficulties of tracing the dynamics of production in general.  The conference is organized by members of the Post Graduate Program "Materiality and Production" (RTG 1678) of the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf and funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Twelfth Conference of the European Network for the Sociological and Demographic Study of Divorce

INED, the French National Institute for Demographic Studies, hosts the twelfth Meeting of the European Network for the Sociological and Demographic Study of Divorce. The conference will take a broad approach to union dissolution, considering both divorce and separation for non-married partnerships. We particularly welcome papers on the antecedents of union dissolution with a particular attention to the changing determinants overtime. Furthermore, we invite papers on different aspects of the consequences of separation and divorce. Separation and divorce concerns different protagonists: women, men and children, in different aspects of their life. The conference will be held in Paris, France on 2-4 October 2014.

Transformations without Revolutions? How Feminist and Lgbtqi Movements Changed the World

A special issue of Zapruder World: Transnational Journal for the History of Social Conflicts

A special issue of Zapruder World: "Transnational Journal for the History of Social Conflicts" edited by Sabrina Marchetti, Vincenza Perilli and Elena Petricola. The journal focuses on social conflict paying particular attention to conflicts as movements rather than focusing on their resolutions, so as to better connect the history of social conflicts with current transnational cycles of protest. It therefore uses “social conflict” as an interpretative category rather than simply an object of analysis, exploring it through concepts and methodologies that address the complex interaction between the “local” and the “global”. Zapruder World is animated by an aspiration towards “global history” but intentionally leaves its actual definition, contents, and methods open for discussion.

Louis Marin and the material condition

    Art History Supplement, September 2014

This issue of Art History Supplement seeks to address issues regarding the work of French philosopher and art historian Louis Marin (1931 – 1992) and the material shift in art history. What do we actually mean by the study of material culture in history of art? One may support that the artefacts that are not considered art are part of the material culture.  However, do we subsequently, if not intentionally, tend to separate the notions of art and material? Whilst, despite art being “mirror” or representation, it is primarily of a material nature.

Articulations of Subjectivity and Objectivity in the Modern Middle East, North Africa, South and Southeast Asia

International Summer Academy, 11-19 September 2014 at the Orient-Institut Beirut. This Summer Academy offers early-career scholars an opportunity to follow up on the debates about modernity, its preconditions and its aftermath by focusing on the multifarious processes in which societies outside Europe have adopted, translated, rejected or produced the global, the modern and tradition since the seventeenth century. It places a specific focus on the notions of subjectivity and objectivity as discursive practices which are intrinsically linked to each other.

Polices et ordre public en France et en Angleterre (1750-1850)

    Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine

Traditional historiography has often opposed the French police model to its English counterpart. However, for twenty years, many researchers relativized the differences of these models and focused more on the interactions between cultures of social control. Recent studies have shown the limits of approaches focused on the only national police models as well as the importance of the circulation of police knowledge and technics in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Everywhere in Europe, this period is marked by the will to reform and by reflections on the procedures for the exercise of the police. Through a panel of international researchers, the conference aims to investigate beyond the national perspective by questioning the permanence and changes in police practices on both sides of the Channel. We will ultimately highlight the major trends of contemporary historiography and identify new paths of work.
