The Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies (IZEA) at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg is offering 5 part time (65%) positions as part of the “Politics of the Enlightenment” Research Training Group (RTG 2999) as a Research Associate (m-f-d) for a fixed term of up to 4 years, starting from 01.04.2026. The Resarch Training Group explores the politics of the Enlightenment from the 18th to the 21st century in two respects: On the one hand, it examines the political claims and interpretations that have been and are being developed in the name of the Enlightenment. On the other hand, it focuses on the political discussions and measures that shape the understanding of Enlightenment in a global context to this day.

The Media of Art/The Arts of Media

XII. International Congress of the German Society of Aesthetics

So-called “media art” has been around not only since technical media began to intervene in the art world; there has never been media-free art. There is no art that does not express itself in certain media, be it image, sound, light, space or language. There is no art that does not rely on marble and chisel, colour and canvas, pen and paper, sound waves and screen, bits and bytes. Neither media nor materials are ever external to a work of art; rather, aesthetic meaning only arises through the respective medial-material configuration and would be invalid without it. The XII. Congress of the German Society for Aesthetics will focus on the question of the media of the arts.

Wahrnehmung der Geschichte als Triebfeder des Handelns

Ziel dieser Tagung ist es, im Rahmen einer Reflexion über die Geschichte und Zukunft Europas herauszuarbeiten, inwiefern der Blick auf die Vergangenheit zu allen Zeiten das Handeln bestimmt hat. Oft wurden Verweise auf die Vergangenheit genutzt, um Konflikte zu schüren, Kriege zu rechtfertigen oder Antagonismen aufrecht zu halten. Dies ist jedoch nur ein Aspekt der historischen Realität. Dabei wird es sowohl um die Wahrnehmung der Vergangenheit in den unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftsschichten gehen (vom einfachen Bürger bis zu den politisch Verantwortlichen oder anderen Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens), als auch um die Art und Weise, wie man sich zu diesem Thema äußert oder geäußert hat (unabhängig von der Art und Weise der Kommunikation: schriftlich, bildlich und/oder akustisch) und um die historiografische Produktion, die ein bestimmtes Denken und Handeln sowohl initiieren als zu seiner Ablehnung führen kann.

List, compile, assemble: small forms and the power of collecting

Workshop of the research training group “The literary and epistemic history of small forms”

Unraveling the various asymmetries inherent in collecting requires shifting our focus from collections themselves to how collections come into being. This entails viewing collections as both purposeful and contingent results of scientific or cultural practice. Drawing on the history of collecting and the history of paperwork, this interdisciplinary workshop aims to enhance our understanding of the collecting processes involving written testimonies, inscriptions, and texts. With a focus on contexts such as artistic-literary primitivism or colonial encounters, the workshop proposes a comparative examination of the asymmetries associated with collecting via three main axes: actor-networks involved in the production of collections, the role of collecting in the management of life, and how collections emerge from asymmetrical media practices.

Small textual and material forms seem particularly adept at circulating within and between different publics. This conference investigates how the movement of brief, compressed, and otherwise small forms ranging from early modern pamphlets to Instagram stories shape the development of diverse publics, as well as the interplay between them. We propose to explore the relationship between small forms and publics through three related strands of inquiry: how infrastructures affect the circulation of small forms, how practices including remediation enable their circulation, and how the circulation of small forms shapes the formation, operation, and dissolution of public life.

Die Veranstaltung in Tübingen bildet nach Treffen in Aix-en-Provence und Paris den Abschluss der Serie von drei Symposien. Die auf Gegenwart und vor allem Zukunft gerichtete Idee einer Nachhaltigen Entwicklung, welche weltweit gerechtes und gutes menschliches Leben ermöglicht, ohne zugleich die Mitwelt und den Planeten irreversibel zu schädigen, wird nicht zuletzt durch Phänomene der Ungewissheit und Unsicherheit herausgefordert. Dies betrifft sowohl normative Fragen – sind die gewählten konkreten Wege und Ziele die richtigen und ist die Prioritätensetzung angemessen? – als auch empirische – ob und inwiefern und mit welchen Methoden sozial-ökologische Prozesse vorhersehbar und beeinflussbar sind und sich daraus mögliche Resilienz-Strategien o.ä. mit Blick auf Transformation ableiten lassen. Wir möchten historische, disziplinäre, inter- und transdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf diese Fragen gemeinsam diskutieren, um dadurch Grundlagen für einen guten Umgang damit zu schaffen.

Confluences des inégalités sociales dans les littératures et médias francophones

L’intersectionnalité du point de vue des études littéraires

Le concept d’intersectionnalité est particulièrement propice à une réévaluation de l’imbrication des rapports de pouvoir entre le passé et le présent. Né à partir du constat de l’existence de discriminations multiples dans la société, ses origines remontent au Black Feminism des années 1970 qui prend en compte les interdépendances entre racisme et sexisme dans la société. Ce terme, qui a été forgé par Kimberlé Crenshaw (1989), s’inspire à la métaphore visuelle du croisement des rues. Depuis lors, la notion d’intersectionnalité décrit différentes formes de discrimination multiple dans la société. Outre les catégories de race, de classe et de genre, d’autres critères de différence et de diversité sociales, comme l’âge, la religion ou la disabilité, sont venus s’y ajouter.

Pluralität als Anlass zu gestalterischer Verdichtung und Kritik in den Künsten und Theologien des 19. Jahrhunderts

Ausgehend von den religiösen Differenzierungsbewegungen des langen 19. Jahrhunderts möchte das vierte Treffen des DFG-Netzwerks „Religion im Plural“ die produktiven Qualitäten gesellschaftlicher Pluralisierungsprozesse ausloten. Im interdisziplinären Austausch (so Musikwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte, Literaturwissenschaft, evangelische und katholische Theologien und Jewish Studies) gilt es, weltanschauliche Diversifizierungsbewegungen zu erfassen sowie allen voran die Frage, wie in Musik, Literatur, bildender Kunst und Theologie das Aufkommen neuer religiöser Formationen und Philosophiekonzepte bis hin zu den Erklärungsmodellen der menschlichen Psyche verhandelt wurde.

Quelles nouvelles perspectives, questions et problématiques épistémologiques et esthétiques apparaissent lorsque l’on déplace le regard du corps en tant que forme totale vers ses différentes composantes ? Le congrès offre un espace d’échange de perspectives internationales issues de la théorie scientifique et de la pratique artistique, les perspectives artistiques et théoriques étant considérées comme étant en synergie les unes avec les autres. La manifestation est ouverte à toutes les personnes intéressées. Elle est financée par la GSHS, l’aide à la recherche intra-universitaire de la Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz et le Laboratoire « Les Mondes allemands » de l’Université Paris 8. Les langues parlées seront l’allemand, le français et l’anglais.

Rêves de l’avenir

L’école doctorale « Cultures européennes du rêve » de l’Université de la Sarre entame sa neuvième et dernière année. Par sa conférence de clôture, elle souhaite non seulement regarder dans le passé, mais surtout se tourner vers l’avenir pour se consacrer au rôle que joue l’avenir dans les représentations de rêve dans la littérature, dans les arts plastiques, sur scène et au cinéma ainsi que dans la musique. Ce sont surtout les questions suivantes qui nous importent : de quel type d’avenir les rêves d’avenir esthétiques parlent-ils ? Sont-ils de nature utopique ou dystopique ? Sont-ils caractérisés en tant que rêves survenus pendant le sommeil ou s’agit-il de représentations de l’avenir qui sont conçues comme des rêves, tout en restant ancrées dans le monde éveillé ? Comment les rêves sont-ils reliés à tel présent ou à tel passé ? Quelle est leur fonction au sein de l’œuvre en question ? Dans quelle mesure les discours religieux, les discours politiques ou les discours du savoir entrent-ils dans la représentation esthétique des rêves de l’avenir ?

VII. Forum Kunst des Mittelalters

Der Deutsche Verein für Kunstwissenschaft e.V. (DVfK) richtet seit 2011 das Forum Kunst des Mittelalters in zweijährlichem Turnus an wechselnden Orten und mit unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten aus. Das mehrtägige Forum versteht sich als eine Plattform für freien und offenen Gedankenaustausch über Kunstwerke und Themen des Mittelalters. Vom 25.-28. September 2024 findet das Forum in Jena (Juliane von Fircks, Svea Janzen, Universität Jena) statt und soll auch diesmal in bis zu 20 Sektionen und mit attraktivem Rahmenprogramm den internationalen Austausch fördern.

Microformes de l’organique dans la littérature, l’art et le cinéma de l’époque moderne à nos jours

L’objectif du colloque, en tant que lieu de rencontre d’approches théoriques et pratiques, est de retracer la naissance et l’évolution des représentations corporelles contemporaines à l’échelle du microscopique, et d’interroger les microformes de l’organique dans une perspective interdisciplinaire et spécifique aux médias. Dans la déconstruction du corps en tant que totalité, ses composantes visibles et invisibles, internes et externes, matérielles et immatérielles, sont explorées, spécifique à la forme médiale, en tant qu’espaces de signification. D’autre part, l’intégration ciblée de contributions artistiques, non seulement dans le sens d’un travail artistique autonome, mais aussi en tant que recherche artistique, permet aux participants de faire l’expérience sensorielle du corps en tant que matérialité.
