Did you mean halal?

Islamic Normativities, Globalization and Secularization

The study of Islamic normative dynamics will be at the heart of this conference that will focus on ‘halal’ qualification / disqualification processes in all areas: how and by whom, for whom, for what reasons objects, discourses, practices can or are actually called "halal" or "haram"? What methods, institutions, arguments of Islamic legitimation / de-legitimation are used ? What are the procedures for monitoring compliance with the standard and how and by whom are they developed or institutionalized? Proposals may question the issues of qualification and disqualification through objects, practices, behaviours qualified as halal or haram in areas such as: food, matrimonial relationships , sexualities, finance, tourism etc. We will select in priority contributions in the social sciences and humanities, history and law, based on empirical studies, archival research, comparisons and syntheses that take a deconstructive perspective.

Fifth European Conference on African Studies (ECAS 5)

Historians, anthropologists as well as specialists of various scholarly traditions are invited to reflect on the question of production, transmission and preservation of administrative and legal documentation in pre-colonial Africa. The aim of this panel is to foster dialogue between scholars working on non-narrative sources, whether land charters, weddings contracts, deeds, funerary inscriptions or other archival materials. Presentations of methodological issues rather than case-studies would facilitate a comparative approach leading to a renewed understanding of the social organizations that produced these documents.

Climate and Weather: Science as Public Culture

Scientific Communication and its History – III

This conference is the third in a series devoted to historical and contemporary perspectives on the communication of science and technology. Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. As with other disciplines studied during the previous conferences, the climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards. Shifting interests within the history of science and the development of environmental history have greatly expanded the field in recent years. The conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on these historiographical developments via a specific focus on the communication of weather and climate from the 18th to the 21st centuries. The conference will address three themes in particular: Commodification of meteorological knowledge, Media, and Historicizing climate history.

Approaches to Complex Predicates (ACP 2013)

CALL FOR PAPERSDeadline: 16 December 2012Complex predicates can be loosely defined as a sequence of items that behave as a single predicate, projecting a single argument structure within a clause. Each of the members of the predicate contributes part of the information ordinarily associated with a single head.Complex predicates are of various types and are found in typologically different languages. They give rise to important empirical and theoretical issues cutting across various subfields of linguistics, such as:- Syntactic and semantic modeling of complex predicate formation: compositionality, argument structure, event structure, etc.- Typological issues in complex predicate formation- Resemblances/dissemblances between syntactic and morphological processes of lexeme formation: idiomaticity, semantic groupings, lexicalization, analogical formation, exemplarity, etc.- Production and processing of complex predicates: storage vs. online processing, acquisition, etc.- Complex predicates and multiword expressionsThe purpose of the conference is to bring together those working on complex predicates in different perspectives and with a variety of approaches.

The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation of the French Evaluation Society is pleased to invite you to a free research seminar on: Methods for Synthesizing Knowledge, to beheld on December 10th 2012 at Paris-Dauphine University, Amphitheater 11. The promotion of evidence-based policy by an increasing number of national governments and international organisations has triggered the issues of gathering available evidence on the impact of public interventions, assessing its credibility, and providing policy-makers with knowledge syntheses. Two state-of-art methods have emerged up to date. The first approach builds on the tools of evidence based medicine: systematic review and meta-analysis. The second approach, called realist synthesis, is rooted in social sciences methodologies. This research seminar will present and discuss the available methods (see programme below). La Maison Universitaire Franco-Mexicaine (MUFM), en collaboration avec le Conseil National de Science et Technologie (CONACyT) et le Bureau du Parlement Européen, convoquent toute la communauté étudiante mexicaine en Europe pour participer au Il Symposium de Boursiers et ex Boursiers du CONACyT en Europe, qui aura lieu au siège du Parlement Européen á Strasbourg, le 29 et 30 novembre 2012. Grâce au succès du premier Symposium organisé en octobre 2011, ayant réunit une partie des étudiants mexicains en France et en Grande Bretagne, ces institutions ont décidé de reconduire l’expérience en mettant d’avantage l’accent sur la dimension européenne de la manifestation en convoquant toute Ia communauté mexicaine étudiante en Europe. Ce Symposium cherche à construire un espace de réflexion sur les avancées des projets de recherche des étudiants mexicains qui se trouvent actuellement en Europe. Il veille aussi à fortifier les liens au sien de la communauté scientifique du CONACyT, et à encourager l’échange d'expériences dans diverses disciplines. De plus, c’est l’occasion d’établir des relations avec les différents réseaux et associations mexicains en Europe ainsi qu’avec des personnalités et autorités mexicaines et internationales présentes pour cette rencontre.

Le German Marshall Fund of the United States-France et l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3, sont heureux de vous convier au colloque international « Democracy Promotion and Nation Building in United States Foreign Policy. The U.S. Model Reconsidered, From the Post-Cold War Balkans to the Arab Revolts », les jeudi 18 et vendredi 19 octobre 2012, à France-Amériques (9 avenue Franklin D. Roosevelt, Paris 8e). Cette conférence sera l’occasion d’examiner les évolutions du débat sur la ‘Democracy Promotion’ de la fin de la Guerre froide jusqu’à l’administration Obama, ainsi que de comprendre la manière dont les évènements récents en Afrique du Nord et au Moyen-Orient ont refaçonné les concepts et la pratique de la ‘Democracy Promotion’. Les réponses que peuvent apporter le partenariat transatlantique à ces défis seront tout particulièrement examinées. Les intervenants présenteront et analyseront les grandes problématiques du sujet telles que l’adaptation de la culture stratégique américaine aux transformations du contexte international, la capacité du modèle de la démocratie américaine à inspirer ou à façonner les transitions vers la démocratie, s’interrogeront sur le rôle de l’armée américaine comme un vecteur de ‘Democracy Promotion’ sur certains théâtres d’opérations, ainsi que sur les nouveaux instruments de politique étrangère employés par l’administration américaine pour promouvoir la démocratie. Les panels discuteront ainsi de l’avenir de la pratique américaine de la ‘Democracy Promotion’ et privilégieront une approche comparative en consacrant un panel à la conception et la pratique européennes de la ‘Democracy Promotion’ ainsi qu’à l’émergence d’autres modèles de démocratie, dans un contexte où le modèle américain se trouve de plus en plus contesté. The doctoral students in the Language Sciences laboratories at Toulouse University (France) are organizing the fourth edition of JéTou (Journées d’Etudes Toulousaines), an international conference aiming at gathering doctoral students and young researchers (who have defended their dissertation within the past three years) together, from the different disciplines of the Language Sciences, on an open and multidisciplinary theme. This 2013 edition will be devoted to a reflexion on the following theme: “Variation and Variability in the Language Sciences: analysing, measuring, contextualising”. The notions of variation and variability are central to various studies in the Language Sciences. The linguist can investigate these notions as a research object or focus on the methodological issues these same notions raise.

Individual itineraries and the circulation of scientific and technical knowledge in East Asia (16th-20th centuries)

How did individuals' geographical mobility contributed the circutation of knowledge in East Asia (16th-20th centuries)? In China, Korea and Vietnam, the bureaucratic systems dictated a specific mode of mobility of the elites. But the ways in which individual itineraries shaped the circulation of knowledge need to be studied not only for civil servants, but also for various socio-professional groups, such as the scholars privately employed by high officials, craftsmen, medical doctors, traders, Buddhist monks, and emperors themselves. To these groups should be added the actors of the globalisation of knowledge during this period.

The first goal of our symposium is to enlighten the role of the animateur d’art in the development of the arts. We hope that this scientific gathering would help us specify this first formula of the cultural actor: “The animateur d’art is an amateur who actively participates in the defense of the arts and in the stimulation of the artistic creation in a certain period. He puts his numerous networks to work in order to spread ideologies and aesthetics through the cultural environment and the society. He is a key figure positioning himself as a mediator between the different art worlds – the plastic arts as well as between the different agents of the cultural environment. His work consists in building bridges between the artists and his own cultural environment in order to ease the reception of the works and to promote a peculiar aesthetics”.
