  The fiftieth anniversary of the African Independence has been an occasion for the East African countries and their diasporas, the international academic community and the former colonial nations to assess the economic, social and political achievements and failures of the past fifty years. However, such inventories tend to focus on the upheavals of the social, economic and political structures, sometimes on the memory of the fathers of the nation and former grand nationalistic narratives, but usually overlook political actors, whether individual or collective, which were marginalized by the men in power during the early post-independent years.

  Reading historical sources in the digital age

  After the inaugural DHLU Symposium in 2009 that focused on "Contemporary history in the digital age" and a second edition which tackled the methodological and theoretical implications of considering websites as primary sources (March 2012), this third edition will focus on the use of online thematic research corpora. Given that more and more sources for contemporary history are being made available online as digital research corpora — as on the CVCE’s site — and following on from the first two editions which examined the methods used to develop these sources, this third edition of Digital Humanities Luxembourg will focus on the various ways in which this material is used by humanities researchers, particularly contemporary historians and more specifically specialists in European integration.

  Changing the Tune: Popular Music and Politics in the XXIst century

  From the fall of communism to the Arab spring

  Popular Music scholars have devoted considerable attention to the relationship between music and power. The symbolic practices through which subcultures state and reinforce identities have been widely documented (mainly in the field of Cultural, Gender and Postcolonial Studies), as has the increasingly political and revolutionary dimensions of popular music. Most studies have focused on the genres and movements that developed with and in the aftermath of the 1960’s counterculture. Yet little has been written about how the politics of popular music has reflected the social, geopolitical and technological changes of the late 20^th and early 21^st centuries, after the fall of Communism. Still, the music of the Arab Spring or of the Occupy and Indignados movements have been scarcely commented upon while they attest to significant changes in the way music is used by activists and revolutionaries today.

  A third phase in historical and anthropological research on family? Towards a regional and dynamic typology

  Dans le chantier interdisciplinaire consacré à l’étude de l’histoire de la famille et de la parenté en Europe, il est possible d’isoler quelques phases majeures consacrées d’abord aux approches quantitatives, puis aux approches localisées et concentrées sur les stratégies des acteurs. Depuis quelques années on assiste au retour aux grandes espaces et au temps long, en proposant des synthèses générales qui prennent en considération l’ensemble du continent européen, en se concentrant sur les dynamiques liées à la parenté. Cette nouvelle anthropologie historique de la parenté revient ainsi à certaines ambitions comparatives de l’histoire de la famille telle qu’elle s’était constituée dans les années 1960 et 1970. Le colloque se fige de réfléchir sur l’intérêt d’analyser les processus régionaux de la famille et de la parenté, saisis dans la longue durée, pour mieux saisir les dynamiques d’ensemble au niveau du continent.

Its aim is to present current knowledge of not only the medieval products, techniques, workshops and labour force, but also of the market and trade in these products. This symposium will present the research carried out in history and archaeology of materials and processes with, in some cases, the support of scientific studies.

  The Mediterranean and southern Iberian peninsula in Medieval times: culture, identity and heritage (5th-15th centuries)

  Le Congrès International « La Méditerranée et le Sud Ibérique l’époque médiévale : culture, identité et patrimoine. Siècles V-XV » aura lieu le 5 et 6 Décembre 2013, signalant les 1100 ans du pillage de Évora, ville du Alentejo, par le futur roi Ordoño II de León en 913. Le Congrès aura comme principal objectif  de rassembler jeunes chercheurs et spécialistes, portugais et étrangers, de domaines si divers comme l’Archéologie, l’Histoire, la Littérature, l’Histoire des Arts, l’Anthropologie et autres dédiés à  l’étude de la thématique du Sud Ibérique à l’époque médiévale. On cherche une analyse multidisciplinaire des relations de proximité et les affinités qui ont eu lieu à l’époque médiévale, entre des régions méridionales et l’espace méditerranéen ainsi que d’autres thématiques reliées à champs spécifiques de l’Art de l’Histoire économique, politique et sociale ou de la culture et mentalités du Sud Ibérique.

  Belgéo Review

  The coordinaters of this issue of he Belgéo review plan to reflect about the "ethnic or national minorities", two polysemous concepts here perceived in a way opened to interpretation even if they are inscribed in P. Poutignat and J. Streiff-Fénart’s definition, when they state that these groups “only exist thanks to the subjective belief their members share that they constitute a community.” The minority group is dialectically linked to the existence of a majority. It can be said “ethnic” because of racial parameters but above all because of the presence of linguistic, religious, cultural or other discriminating and specific markers. The will to be different expresses itself in various ways – instutional or not – and leads to very diverse situations, located between resistance and cooperation, forced integration and autonomy. The way to name places, individuals, but also their status – granted or claimed for – their visibility in the social and political space, are elements characterizing the notion of “otherness”.

  The Office as an interior (1880-1960)

  The so-called “second industrial revolution” meant a significant growth in the tertiary sector (banks, insurance companies, etc.); at the same time new administrative bodies arose both in industry and at agencies and public authorities. This went hand in hand with a massive increase in the numbers of employees. The employee became the socio-professional figure of the urban modernity, whereas the professional woman became increasingly important. The symposium addresses the development of the office in order to analyse the interdependency between physical and social space, materiality and practices, strategies and tactics, structures and individuals. Likewise, it is intended to approach the office from a historical perspective, as attention is directed towards the significance of the office for structuring and transforming the sociocultural situation from the turn of the last century through the end of the 1950’s.

  7th International PhD Seminar Urbanism and Urbanization

  This 7th edition of the U&U International PhD Seminar will be held at the ENSA Paris-Malaquais, under the scientific direction of the Laboratory of Infrastructure and Architecture Planning (LIAT). Continually facing new demands from epistemological or technical society, and now facing an economic and social crisis (especially in Europe), urban planning is forced to question its methods. The Seminar is intended for PhD Students who wish to present their ongoing research questioning aspects of the field of urban planning in a historical perspective, from a theoretical point of view or with a potential for practical implementation. The U&U International PhD Seminars take place exclusively in English and seek to promote the exchange of ideas, provoke debate amongst researchers, invite comparisons, cross-pollinate different disciplines and to highlight the latest ongoing research.   “Rural Archaeology and Rural History – Middle Ages – Modern era” The theme chosen for this 2013 edition of the Rural History Summer School will allow us to consider the relationship between rural archeology and history. More than the oppositions, it seems it is the relationships, the combinations and the intertwining of disciplines, that need to be questioned through the different scientific traditions in Europe (England, Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy). This European overview will be the major focus of this 2013 summer school. The emphasis will also be put on the recent development of post-medieval archaeology, practiced in England and Italy for example, but still embryonic in several European countries. The interrogations will dwell on rescue and commercial Archeology and on its methods and results.
