“Colonial Communities” in the Mediterranean between Italian Unification and the Occupation of Libya

The trilingual conference “Colonial Communities” in the Mediterranean between Italian Unification and the Occupation of Libya seeks to address a still relatively unexplored topic: the study of Italian communities abroad, with particular attention to the Mediterranean world in the period between national unification (1861) and the occupation of Libya (1911). At the core of this reflection lies the close, and not merely chronological, relationship between the migratory dynamics that characterized the early decades of unified Italy and the rise of colonial expansionism. The seminar therefore aims to investigate this connection through the specific lens offered by the Italian presence in North Africa and in the Ottoman Empire before the occupation of Libya.

Re-creating Palestine : Trauma, Memory and Resistance in the Contemporary Artistic Production in/on Palestine

This international conference aims to explore the central role of culture and art in the reconstruction and regeneration of the social fabric, through a reinterpretation of trauma as a driver of creation and preservation of cultural memory and as a form of resistance to the politics of erasure. We encourage papers dealing with the interconnections between trauma, memory and resistance in multiple artistic languages to highlight the role of art in reinterpreting trauma, making it a source of memory and thus a basis for social change. The focus will be on the artistic production, especially during the 21st century, created by Palestinian artists about Palestine, including those in the diaspora.

    Evil Thoughts

As doubly “evil”—captive and at the same time wicked, joyfully heinous or mysteriously ominous, systematically negative yet dangerously prankish—thoughts will therefore be the multiple objects of the 12th issue of Kaiak. A philosophical journey, which intends to investigate, in an anarchic and unpredictable manner, the ontological as well as psychosocial scope of their presumed inferiority to the limpid greatness of the intellect, their mute plurality, their unspeakable and obsessive presence in the world of culture.

“Imago Mundi”. An Overview of Metaphor: Creativity, Phraseology and Discourse

The guiding question of the conference will therefore be to try to specify the linguistic and conceptual functioning of the metaphor. More generally, the conference will welcome any contribution aimed at bringing out the relationships between metaphor and the three concepts in question: creativity, lexicalization and discourse. The analysis of metaphor can proceed from both a diachronic and synchronic perspective and address different types of corpora and texts. The conference will pay particular attention to the analysis of different types of discourse, in particular scientific, technological, media, tourism, advertising, political, legal, philosophical, historical, literary, artistic and educational/didactic discourse.

    Thinking, practicing and living plurilingualism

    Third edition

Reflecting the broad themes of this third conference, the three interconnected and complementary verbs of the title reflect an expanded sphere of investigation into language didactics and the construction of plurilingual identities, mostly linked to institutionalized places of learning such as schools or universities but also to other fields and approaches, to other professions and profiles involved in the exercise of interculturality and in the planning or management of plurilingual spaces. This international conference will bring together contributions from specialists in language didactics, didactics of plurilingualism, and language policies, grouped into three main sections for the purposes of fruitful exchange.

    Merleau-Ponty’s materialisms

    Journal “Chiasmi International”

Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology spontaneously evolves in the direction of an ontology, and on several occasions this ontology takes the form of a materialism. Many impulses exert their pressure on the trajectory of Merleau-Ponty’s thought. The Marxism with which he is confronted in the 1950s, the philosophies of nature that converge in his last courses, the great Husserlian theme of the body that explodes in The Visible and the Invisible in an ontology of the flesh. The spectrum of Merleauponty’s materialisms is thus irreducible to any preconceived paradigm and is always intimately embedded in the singular elaborations in which Merleau-Ponty is engaged.

Between ethics and semiotics. Signs and nature in the Anthropocene era

    “Filosofi(e)Semiotiche” journal (Il Sileno Edizioni), volume 9, n. 1, 2022

The Anthropocene, unlike other previous eras, is commonly recognized as the era in which the impact of human beings is most incisive in determining the dynamics of the climate and the planet in which we live. With this Call we intend, therefore, to highlight some aspects of the Anthropocene in order to suggest a rethinking of the relationship between human nature and the surrounding environment ; this will allow us to specify how ethics and semiotics can be used in a rethinking of these two categories, and, in general, of the link between language and nature, which inevitably involves the need to review our ways of “making world”.

Principles and actions for second language training, in migratory and pandemic contexts

This call for papers follows on the colloquium held in Metz in September 2018 and is based on the various measures put in place to welcome migrants through language training. As the context in which we work has evolved, our thinking and actions now take into account the health crisis, which has multiplied the fragilities and vulnerabilities that had increased by the turn of the century with globalization, and even more so, the migration flow, which involved and still involve the responsibility of host societies. As for the new fragilities and vulnerabilities that have emerged in the pandemic context, they concern in particular the freedom of mobility, access to online courses, and the impacts of social distancing.

    Knowledge - Power - Action

Congress of the Swiss Philosophical Society

The relationship between “knowledge”, “power” and “action” affects many areas of social life and individual existence. Let us think, for example, of politics, health care or education: What kind of knowledge is at the service of power? How “having to let know” and “not wanting to know” intersect in clinical practice? How to teach and to learn “to act” and “to be able to act”? In all these areas, philosophy can accompany a careful reflection on the three concepts with the aim of learning more: about “knowledge” in its various forms (theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge, universal knowledge and singular knowledge, rational knowledge and sensitive knowledge); about “power” as the ability to act and produce effects or also as authority and domination; about “action” in its manifold implications, especially about the responsibility towards others that is always inherent in it.
