Captives, recruited, migrants: Empires and labor mobilization

From XVIIth century to present days

This workshop starts from the hypothesis that warfare and labor are strongly connected in Empire building and their evolution, to begin with war captives in early modern Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas and to continue with the various forms of recruitment in land and maritime empires in all those areas. Captives as well as local peasants were soldiers, seamen, and colonists at the same time. Forms of forced recruitment were still important in the XIX^th century (the press system in Britain and its variations in the Empire, recruitments in Russia) and continued in the XX^th century, in Europe during the wars, outside of Europe during and after colonization and decolonization up through nowadays children soldiers.

Literature and Society in Central Asia

En se concentrant sur les défis sociétaux tels qu’ils se reflètent dans la production littéraire centre-asiatique, cette demi-journée propose d’apporter des réponses, mais aussi de nouvelles formes de questionnements sur la façon dont les différentes sociétés et les populations de cette aire ont dépeint leur propre cheminement historique au cours des siècles. Tout en cherchant à étudier la façon dont on pouvait user de la littérature comme d’une source historiographique, et tout en essayant d’évaluer le niveau d’intrication de la littérature avec la société qui la produit, les intervenants accorderont une attention spécifique à la question des relations entre culture et pouvoir. La période abordée s’étend du XV^e siècle jusqu’ aux années 1990, à partir de la fin de l’époque médiévale, lorsque « la renaissance timouride » livrait les plus belles heures de l’incessante symbiose turco-persane, pour s’achever avec la perestroïka envisagée du point de vue de la littérature kirghize.

Giovanni Battista Vico (1668–1744) spent most of his professional life as Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Naples. He was trained in jurisprudence, but read widely in Classics, philology, and philosophy, all of which informed his highly original views on history, historiography, and culture. His thought is most fully expressed in his mature work, the Scienza Nuova or The New Science. In his own time, Vico was relatively not so known, but from the nineteenth century onwards his views found a wider audience and today his influence is widespread in the humanities and social sciences. While borrowing our title “The Vico Road” to James Joyce, the conference at the Paris Institute of Advanced Study will examine the current state of the study of the works of Giambattista Vico. We will try to encourage discussion of ideas that can be considered Vichian in nature and that have some affinity with modern and contemporary thought.

The framing of health as a global issue over the last three decades has carved out an intellectual, economic and political space that differs from that of the post-war international public health field. This older system was characterised by disease eradication programs and by the dominance of nation states and the organisations of the United Nations. The actors, intervention targets and tools of contemporary global health contrast with previous international health efforts.

Diplomatie globale et ressources naturelles

Enjeux, pratiques et influences des acteurs non-étatiques (XVIIIe-XXIe siècle)

La fin de la guerre froide a été l’occasion de (re)découvrir le poids des acteurs non-étatiques dans une diplomatie de plus en plus mondialisée. Selon Richard Langhorne, c’est avec le Congrès de Vienne de 1961 que s’amorce le processus de déliquescence de la diplomatie classique née au XVII^e siècle dans laquelle seuls les États jouaient véritablement un rôle. Cet affaiblissement progressif des États a conduit à l’effacement des frontières traditionnelles entre ce qui relève de l’action diplomatique officielle et des relations internationales plus informelles, menées en marge des États. Le poids croissant de divers acteurs non-étatiques sur la scène internationale est un signe révélateur de cette transition.

La Fondation maison des sciences de l’homme et ses partenaires offrent des bourses de recherche postdoctorale en sciences humaines et sociales d’une durée de 9 mois dans le cadre de son programme « Fernand Braudel-IFER » (International Fellowships for Experienced Researchers), soutenu par la Commission européenne (programme action Marie Curie – COFUND – 7^ePCRD). Le programme Fernand Braudel-IFER se décline en deux volets : le programme Fernand Braudel-IFER incoming est destiné à des séjours en France (pour des chercheurs appartenant à un centre de recherche basé à l’étranger) ; le programme Fernand Braudel-IFER outgoing (pour des chercheurs appartenant à un centre de recherche en France) s’adresse à des candidats résidant en France qui souhaitent réaliser un séjour de recherche dans un autre pays européen (membre de l'Union européenne ou associé au FP7).

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?

Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?

Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Les mouvements de massification scolaire constatés dans la plupart des systèmes éducatifs des cinquante dernières années ont considérablement transformé les enjeux liés aux espaces scolaires et éducatifs. On observe une recomposition de ces espaces qui interrogent l’articulation des missions traditionnelles de l’école autour de l’instruction et de la transmission des apprentissages, avec des prises en charge éducatives plus larges qui répondent à de nouvelles problématiques. Ce numéro s'intéresse aux modalités de recomposition des espaces scolaires et éducatifs en rapport avec la prise en charge locale (collectivités locales et territoriales, associations communautaires ou de proximité, mouvements d’éducation populaire…) des problématiques sociales et scolaires qui marquent l'école contemporaine. Dans un contexte concurrentiel où les espaces urbains et scolaires sont de plus en plus hiérarchisés, où les frontières intérieures à l’école se renforcent, où les frontières extérieures sont mouvantes, nous interrogeons les liens entre les ségrégations spatiales, les parcours scolaires et les formes de traitement des nouvelles problématiques éducatives.

Bilan et perspectives

In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.

Islam and Regional Cultures in Pakistan

With the hope of throwing new light on the transformations of Pakistani society, this one-day conference intends to move the focus away from two dominant discourses on Pakistan : that is, on the one hand, the security discourse of political and media circles that reduces Pakistan to a state on the fringe of failure, trying to cope with radical Islam and terrorism; and, on the other hand, Pakistan’s official nationalism, which rests on a unitary conception of the nation that disregards the cultural and religious diversity of the country, stressing instead Islam and Urdu as national unifiers while relegating regional cultures to folklore. This conference hopes to partly fill this gap by inviting participants to illustrate the complex, lived experience of Islam in Pakistan, the identity component of religious practices that do not fit in the dominant norm, and their inscription in local political and ethnic relations. Papers would ideally use first-hand observation and/or analyses of cultural productions to examine circumscribed case studies.

Common Experiences, Common Desires ? Tracing an Intellectual History between China and Africa

In his 1954 presentation to dignitaries from across Asia and Africa, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai acknowledged the differences between the two cultural spheres; nevertheless, Zhou stressed, a more important factor in all future relations should be the “common experiences and desires” of people from across the two continents to create a new world from the ashes of war and colonialism. Building on Zhou’s insight into commonalities of experience, this presentation will trace the cultural intersections that have existed between China and African since the 1920s.

Polices et ordre public en France et en Angleterre (1750-1850)

Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine

Traditional historiography has often opposed the French police model to its English counterpart. However, for twenty years, many researchers relativized the differences of these models and focused more on the interactions between cultures of social control. Recent studies have shown the limits of approaches focused on the only national police models as well as the importance of the circulation of police knowledge and technics in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Everywhere in Europe, this period is marked by the will to reform and by reflections on the procedures for the exercise of the police. Through a panel of international researchers, the conference aims to investigate beyond the national perspective by questioning the permanence and changes in police practices on both sides of the Channel. We will ultimately highlight the major trends of contemporary historiography and identify new paths of work.

La conférence cherche à réunir des jeunes chercheurs et doctorants qui travaillent sur les questions aux confins du droit et des autres disciplines. Le projet a été initialement conçu comme une réponse au silence de la discipline juridique s’agissant des causes, des effets, et des solutions à apporter à la récente crise économique. Plus généralement, nous souhaitons mettre en place un cadre permettant de débattre sur la manière dont les juristes européens peuvent s’approprier les problématiques posées par la gouvernance globale. Cette année la conférence se tiendra à sciences politiques Paris les 19 et 20 mai 2014.

La santé des familles monoparentales au Royaume-Uni

Du Black Report au rapport Marmot (1990-2010)

La durée de vie des Anglais a augmenté mais les disparités sanitaires se sont accentuées dans le même temps (Marmot, 2010). L’objectif de la journée d’études permettra de lever le voile sur ces phénomènes et de les analyser au regard d’enquêtes qualitatives et quantitatives par exemple. Il s’agira d’étudier les réalités de la vie quotidienne de ces parents, les inégalités sociales et géographiques en matière de santé, de comprendre les mécanismes et d’envisager les enjeux sanitaires sur les futures générations tout en sachant que la responsabilité de la santé publique est transférée du National Health Service aux collectivités locales, selon les propositions du gouvernement de coalition.

En partenariat avec Electricité de France (EDF), l’Institut d’études avancées (IEA) de Paris recrute deux chercheurs internationaux de haut niveau en sciences humaines et sociales et domaines connexes pour une période de 9 mois chacun, dans le cadre d’un programme de recherche sur la transition énergétique des sociétés européennes, et en particulier l’Allemagne et le Royaume-Uni, de la ville au territoire. L'IEA de Paris offre la possibilité aux chercheurs qu’il accueillera à partir d’octobre 2014 ou janvier 2015, de se consacrer entièrement au développement de leur recherche en bénéficiant d’un environnement scientifique de premier plan, et en établissant des réseaux durables avec les institutions universitaires et de recherche à Paris et dans la Région Île-de-France.
