  Islamic architecture: histories and architectural practices

  La notion d’architecture islamique renvoie à la production artistique développée sous la domination musulmane entre le VII^e et XIX^e siècle. Le programme riche et diversifié (maisons, palais, caravansérails, khans, médersas, hôpitaux, bains,…) qui illustre l’architecture islamique a interpellé les voyageurs, les archéologues, les architectes et les historiens. Les études historiques, présentées sous forme de monographies, de synthèses et d’essais, visaient la connaissance des dimensions formelles, ornementales, constructives, et symboliques de l’art islamique en général. Elles ont évolué de la définition des variations de style et des spécificités régionales vers la reconstitution des processus de fabrication et de gestion des édifices. L’historiographie produite à travers le temps dépasse largement la connaissance de la réalité de cette production architecturale pour orienter les regards vers l’héritage islamique et les pratiques architecturales.

  Practices of criticism

  Iinterdisciplinary research seminars run by the "History of art and representations" research group within the framework of the "Chantiers d'Europe" festival

  Avant de relever de la théorie, la critique se caractérise par une pratique : celle d’un spectateur subjectif – aussi perspicace et avisé soit-il – qui s’efforce de transmettre aux autres les émotions et réflexions nées d’une expérience éphémère. Les conditions de l’exercice varient selon qu’il tient un blog sur internet, écrit une chronique dans un quotidien, rédige une étude pour une revue savante ou qu’il initie des étudiants à l’analyse de la mise en scène. Rien de tel, pour affûter son jugement de goût, que de le frotter aux autres. Soumettre à la contradiction les critères de sa propre appréciation, c’est l’essence de l’esthétique, déjà l’esquisse d’une politique. L’Europe ne doit-elle pas se concevoir avant tout comme un espace de pensée critique ? Chantiers d’Europe met la critique en chantier avec le concours de l’équipe de recherche « Histoire des arts et des représentations » (HAR) de l’Université Paris Ouest Nanterre, de ses partenaires de l’Université Paris 8 Saint-Denis du Labex Arts-H2H et d’autres laboratoires, dans le cadre du projet « La critique comme création », coordonné par Emmanuel Wallon.

  Jalon pour une histoire comparée des pratiques et théories féministes du cinéma et de la vidéo qui se déploient en Europe dans les années 1970-1980, ce colloque international propose de croiser, dans un premier temps, les regards entre la France et l'Espagne. Résolument interdisciplinaires, mêlant les approches historiennes, esthétiques, techniques, sociologiques ou encore anthropologiques, les journées amorceront un état des lieux des recherches sur les appropriations féministes de la caméra, la notion de « cinéma des femmes » et les représentations genrées à l'écran, à travers ces deux pays.

  Typography and graphism of Arabic writing: issues and perspectives

  Cet après-midi d’étude a pour objectif de discuter des enjeux actuels de la typographie de la lettre arabe, à une échelle internationale et à la lumière des expériences passées. Témoins, historiens, artistes, praticiens et enseignants y dialogueront autour des projets de réforme de l’écriture et de renouvellement de la typographie arabe, hier et aujourd’hui, ainsi que des propositions esthétiques qui leur sont liées. On y analysera les résistances aux propositions nouvelles mais aussi les appuis qu’elles trouvent, et les raisons de l’intérêt que la lettre arabe suscite actuellement auprès des graphistes, qu’ils travaillent sur des textes en langue arabe ou non.

  One of the 20th century's main features was the large movements of people abandoning their places of origin for economic, political and social reasons. Migration-fostering conditions, like the search for sufficient means of subsistence, escaping from armed conflict and political and religious persecution, are intensified by economic crises and the advent of authoritarian Governments. In the host countries, emigrants, exiles and refugees form associations, publish periodicals, hold commemorations and foster socialisation tools, which make them a group with a national identity and/or a specific political positioning. Concomitantly, they undergo acculturation, as a result of their inevitable adjustment to the new reality, translated into the activities they perform and the structure of the relations they keep with the host country.

  Memories of Trajan, memoirs of Hadrian

  The year 2017 will see the nineteen-hundredth anniversary of the death of Emperor Trajan and the accession of his kinsman Hadrian. Ancient and modern cultural productions have often thought about those two emperors together. We will study the memories of both emperors over the centuries from 117 to 2017. This means that the conference will convene literary scholars, historians, art historians, archaeologists and scholars of other disciplines: we will study all kinds of discourse on Trajan and Hadrian, be it scholarly (historiography), artistic (particularly literary) or more generally cultural (museums, exhibitions). Papers may dwell on the memory of one emperor in particular, but we will retain first and foremost those which propose a crossed vision of their memories.

  Following the renewal of the history of Technology and of the history of chemistry, this Research Seminar intends to explore operative knowledge in chemistry in connection with several fields including economics, political management, consumption and production processes. It seeks to shed a light, since the Early modern period, on various configurations where experimentation, exploration, transformation of Matter were held, through a wide range of technical devices. We will underline cross-skills, transfers and hybridization of processes, and we will show how operative knowledge fostered multiple appropriations: we will then explore the diversity of practices and know-how which allowed specific actions on substances and transformations of matter, and which were the basis of innovation and industrialization and of the reshaping of environment on the long run.

  Cities we don't talk about

  The cities of urban research have long been and still are widely today, the "great cities". But the realities of urban are not limited to them. In France for example the small and medium-sized cities house more than a quarter of the population. What does the observation of these cities bring to knowledge of the urban phenomenon? On the other hand, in the research devoted to major metropoles, it is often very specific neighborhoods that are the subject of attention of research as well as the media: social housing developments or the central gentrified neighborhoods. But more "ordinary" neighbourhoods are not often the focus. What does the observation of these neighbourhoods that we do not talk about "say" about the city? In other words, we would like to call on work that offers openings of the typologies of cities as the typologies of neighbourhoods that are subjacent to the discourse and debates on the urban.

  10th Annual and International Colloquium of the Society of Activities and Research on the Indian World

  In the postcolonial theoretical framework, the study of heritage and ruptures is a rather familiar paradigm. But it is not a depleted paradigm. Given the millennial history of the Indian subcontinent and the plurality of its culture, the way its languages, literatures and arts appropriate the past, grasp the present and envisage the future remains a relevant object for inquiry. From the crossroads of diachronicity and synchronicity, tradition and modernity, singularity and solidarity, here and elsewhere, repetition and reinvention, the 10^th annual SARI conference to be held on the 28^th and 29^th May 2015 at the Université Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense and on the 30^th May 2015 at the université Paris 13, Sorbonne Paris Cité, will be devoted to the exploration of this topic from an inter and pluridisciplinary perspective.

  Comics and sport

  During the final talks of the fruitful international conference named “body languages in comics” set up by the junior drawn sciences laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Lyon on 8th and 9th October 2014, the idea to carry on, in a more precise way, the numerous debates on the occasion of a later scientific event was mentioned. In light of this, the C3S laboratory (“culture, sport, health and society”) of the University of Bourgogne/Franche-Comté considers holding an international symposium in order to study how sport is depicted in comics. Researchers in the C3S laboratory dedicate their work to sport sciences with a theoretical and epistemological commitment marked by interdisciplinarity. According to this stance, the international conference will be open to various contributions allowing to understand the representations (whether they be historical, sociological, anthropological, literary, semiotic, psychological…etc…) of sport in comics. This scientific event will be organized within the premises of the UPFR Sports in Besançon on 26th and 27th November 2015.

  As part of the Saint Martin's year 2016 (1700th anniversary of the birth of Saint Martin), an international conference will be held at the University of Tours on the theme of “Saint Martin, expansion and revivals in his popularity from the origins to the present day”. The conference concerns not only the historical field but archeology, art history, sociology, theology, literary studies. The focus will be on the lesser known aspects of the theme, e.g. the revivals of saint Martin's cult in some regions of Europe at different periods; or ethnological and anthropological dimensions and their impact on art and literature; or theological appropriation of the saint Martin's figure.

  L’objet de ce colloque sera d’étudier les collections privées ou publiques liées à l’Extrême-Orient dans une perspective contemporaine. Si notre ambition sera d’accorder une large place à l’art contemporain, les collections envisagées pourront également rassembler des objets plus anciens, et pas seulement des objets d’art. Le terme « Extrême-Orient » sera ici compris dans un sens large, incluant les îles de l’Asie de l’Est et du Sud-Est. L’approche sera interdisciplinaire, mêlant histoire de l’art, esthétique, anthropologie, sociologie, économie ou même politique.
