  Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology

  Technocritique(s). Reflection upon 3.3 million years of human technical externalization

  Wherever digital solutions and artificial intelligence (AI) have spread, whatever the creative domain or human activity, the impression of having a total, even universal, all-terrain technology has never been so strong. We cannot ignore that the digital revolution, while apparently offering simplicity and ease-of-use is accompanied by a rather remarkable invisibilization of technology’s infrastructure, leaving its users ignorant to the processes and material elements that encompass even the simplest tools. Homo comfort, as the Italian anthropologist Stefano Boni calls it, lives in a hypertechnological world, in which he is ignorant of most of its systems. How can one understand the least-effort infrastructure in which we live when recontextualized within nearly 3.3 million years of technological externalization ? Were 3.3 million years of experimentation necessary to arrive at this point, or rather, did we need to collectively forget our entire history in order to accept our current situation?

  Technologies of Ubiquity in Visual Arts (19th-21st centuries)

  Investigating the influence of technologies of emission, transmission and reception in the visual arts and culture, this seminar proposes to federate a set of recent research on the relationship between art and technologies of remote viewing, from the 19th century to the present. Expanding on the theme of Tele-Visions and the impact of technologies of ubiquity in the visual arts, the association IMAGO-Visual Cultures have curated six sessions featuring international guests, with both researchers and artists.

  Health and Nature

  Thematic issue of the journal “Histoire, médecine et santé”

  This thematic issue of the journal Histoire, médecine et santé examines the various uses of and relations to nature in the field of health. Inspired by the multidisciplinary issues raised by the current climate and biodiversity crises, this thematic issue follows recent academic initiatives in interrogating the various conceptions of nature and their effects in a number of cultural fields (urban planning, artistic production, etc.). It seeks to explore the ways in which these representations, rooted in both ontologies and marketing issues, constrain and transform the medical uses of natural elements and spaces. The issue is open to proposals from a wide range of historical and geographical contexts that could help broaden our understanding of the naturalness of the elements and products in question.

  For many years, the promotion of endogenous knowledge has been a recurring theme in discussions between academics and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The significant contribution of this heritage to science seems to have been systematically neglected. These considerations are not new in the light of the history that shapes them, especially since these knowledge systems give rise to various epistemological, social, political and media considerations. This call for contributions aligns with the philosophical concerns of Valentin Yves Mudimbe, advocating for the construction of an “indigenous science” that seeks to understand African socio-cultural realities by reinventing Africa.

  For a History of University Settings in Quebec (19th-20th centuries)

  This call for papers is a continuation of the panel “Un renouveau de l’histoire des milieux universitaires au Québec ? Trajectoires inédites et mobilisations des savoirs”, which was organised as part of the annual conference of the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française. The call is for a thematic issue to be published in Revue d’histoire de l’éducation / Historical Studies in Education in spring 2025. It aims at bringing together current research on the history of universities (French- and English-speaking) in Quebec in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in order to connect different approaches and objects, while also demonstrating the relevance of considering universities as orbital centres, both practically and heuristically, for future research.

It is considered to be the heritage of tangible and intangible heritage assets of a group or society that is inherited from past generations, which has been reconstructed in present to make it accessible and beneficial to new generations. Therefore, memory of heritage is an interdisciplinary instrument that plays a significant role in shaping a sense of identity and a source of inspiration for creativity and innovation, but it is also can be a reason of exclusion, or even hostage to political conflicts and ideological debates.

  Bringing suffering into the narrative(s)

  Since the “narrative turn” of the 1980s and the “affective turn” of the 1990s, contemporary human and social sciences, as well as writing practices, have given increasing prominence to individual narratives seen as enriching viewpoints to better understand human experience and social reality. The “subject”, long viewed with suspicion in a positivist conception of knowledge, is taking center stage in a context of weakening “metanarratives” and growing social struggles – for civil rights, for the self-determination of peoples, etc. (Grard 2017). These changes also emerge in the healthcare field : this slogan of the Disability rights movement, “Nothing about us without us”, reflects a yearning to place the subject at the heart of the discourse. This new issue of the Revue des sciences sociales will explore how human and social sciences contribute to the production and analysis of individual narratives that shed new light on experiences of illness and suffering.

  Technologies of Ubiquity in the Visual Arts, 19th-21st centuries

  The international symposium Télé—Visions brings together a body of recent work on the influence of emission, transmission and reception technologies in the visual arts and visual culture, from the 19^th century to the present. Beyond the medium of television itself, the plural “tele-visions” refers to the variety of remote viewing and image transmission techniques which, from semaphores to wireless telegraphy and up to fiber optics and contemporary networks, have configured new models for the circulation and transmission of images. Dialoguing with the history of science and technology as well as with media archaeology, the contributors to the conference will explore broad topics such as the joint evolution of perceptual regimes and remote transmission techniques, the modalities of “prosthetic vision,” the material effects of image transmission and the spatio-temporal issues inherent to network dynamics.

  Questioning Technology in a Time of Global Upheaval

  This thematic dossier puts forward the hypothesis that technology today represents a space of differentiation and a place for negotiating plural and conflicting interests, with a direct impact on material production, the organisation of work and labour, and the definition of space. Why and how is technology defined in contemporary architectural, urban and territorial production? What political and social projects does technology embody? What are the issues and controversies involved? To further explore this hypothesis and to help answer these questions, this call for papers aims to build an open debate on an international scale, to shed light on current controversies and to question the place and role of technology in a time of global upheaval. Papers may focus on one or more of the following topics.

  Ces journées d’étude ont pour ambition de créer un espace d’échanges autour de la question de la justice, en réalisant un dialogue entre différentes disciplines et différents courants intellectuels et doctrinaux mobilisant le concept de genre. Ce projet a donc une double ambition : (ré)actualiser les réflexions concernant la notion de justice en mobilisant une approche interdisciplinaire, afin de mieux comprendre sa place et ses effets tant dans les critiques féministes, écoféministes, queers et décoloniales qu’au sein même de ces mouvements, améliorer la réception des apports doctrinaux des critical legal studies, feminist legal studies et queer legal studies en France.
