Hagnos, Miasma, Katharsis. The journey between the categories of purity and impurity in the imagination of the ancient world

Dans le monde ancien, l’exigence d’accomplir des actes de purification, liés au besoin d’expier une faute ou d’accompagner un changement de statut, est perçue comme capitale dans beaucoup de circonstances. Les mots miasma et catharsis utilisés pour désigner respectivement la souillure et la purification, englobent de fait une dimension beaucoup plus articulée, qui se situe entre les sphères de compétence du pur et de l’impur. Les occasions qui prescrivaient le recours à des rites de purification étaient en rapport avec des phases liminaires de la vie, telle la naissance, la mort, mais aussi le mariage, ou encore avec les festivités religieuses. La mort était par exemple considérée l’une des principales sources de souillure. Le miasma qui l’accompagnait pouvait contaminer les dieux et les hommes, les vivants et les morts. Tous devaient alors indifféremment se soumettre aux rituels de purification. Les divinités elles-mêmes n’hésitaient pas à prendre les distances des individus contaminés, comme Artémis, lorsqu’elle abandonne son favori, Hippolyte, à son destin.

This colloquium aims to examine the "historiographical models" used to study the Norman worlds of the Middle Ages. This is understood to mean the interpretative frameworks of the past that have had a lasting impact on our reading and understanding of the history of each of the countries or regions affected by Norman expansion. With regards to the Viking period and the settlement of Scandinavians in various parts of Europe, the questions that have been posed are different and the responses given have strongly influenced each of the historiographies.

At War with Words

Letters, diaries and memoirs of soldiers, women and children in the First World War

What were the feelings, the perceptions and the mental attitudes of soldiers and civilians, of women and children, during the war? What strategies of psychological resistance did they employ in response to such destabilising experience? It is possible to answer these questions by consulting the wide variety of writings produced by the combatants and by the civilian population "mobilised" during the conflict. These letters, diaries, and memoirs – some still hidden in old drawers, though many collected in 'folk writing' archives – are also of considerable narrative and historical interest, due to their linguistic peculiarities, and their efficacy as depth-probes and guides into the war. This conference will address the methodological debates that are still ongoing, while presenting texts of particular significance, as well as the results of European research in historical and linguistic fields.

Milano allo specchio: da Costantino al Barbarossa l’autopercezione di una capitale

L’intention de ce colloque est de regarder Milan à travers ce prisme autoréférentiel. Le but est de repérer les points cruciaux de ce processus historique en se servant d’approches transdisciplinaires qui permettent de fournir une vision à 360 degrés. Les contributions d’historiens, d’historiens de l’art, d’archéologues, d’historiens de la langue et de philologues consentiront donc de dessiner une image novatrice de la ville. Les axes porteurs de telle réflexion s’articuleront autour de trois thématiques : Milan capitale, la figure d’Ambroise et les emblèmes royaux lombards. Il s’agit de concepts qui reviennent régulièrement au fil des siècles afin de justifier les ambitions politiques, territoriales, ecclésiastiques, ainsi que culturelles de la ville. Pendant nos journées d’étude, on essaiera de comprendre par quels instruments – en prenant en considération tous les médias artistiques et les différentes sources – la continuité de la ville se construit. Il s’agira également de décrire les mécanismes qui font de la tradition un agrégateur identitaire fondamental.

Between Earth and sea

Via Aurelia and the topography of the Latium and Tuscany coastline

For the last decades, the studies carried out along the Italian coasts have been a favoured field of research, concerning some specific aspects of the antique and mediaeval society, its links with the sea, and with other men beyond the sea. Within that context, the coasts of Lazio and Tuscany reveal themselves to be particularly interesting: they are the witnesses of a wealthy business network, along the coast lines, centred on the via Aurelia, and the numerous harbours and mooring areas, used since ancient days. This colloquium is dedicated to reopening a debate among experts, thanks to the contributions of various research approaches, and with a particular attention to the Tuscia area.

This interdisciplinary and international conference aims at gathering and confronting two notions that are currently quite fashionable: heritage and digital humanities. Heritage, to be understood as goods shared by a community and founding its cultural identity, is to be taken in its widest meaning. Digital humanities offer methods, practices and numerical tools serving traditional research objects, but also new ones and leading to new theoretical and analytical approaches.We shall question the specific contribution of digital humanities to the development and dissemination of a given heritage. What can be the advantage of digital technologies with regards to more traditional approaches, whether it is museographical, ethnologic, literary, linguistic, etc.?

L’objectif de la journée d’étude internationale FERTIGE13 (Ferro Tirreno Genova 2013) est de dynamiser la mise en réseau des jeunes chercheurs en réunissant une douzaine de doctorants et jeunes docteurs (moins de cinq ans) concernés par l’espace et la chronologie de la réunion, tout en privilégiant l’interdisciplinarité des approches. Les intervenants seront invités à présenter des travaux en lien avec cette problématique, en insistant sur la contextualisation à échelle inter-régionale, et en focalisant sur les méthodologies impliquées, dans l’idée de confronter au mieux les dynamiques de recherche actuelles entre les différentes institutions.
