  Culinary Translation

  Translation and the culinary arts are universal human activities. Both have been practised since time immemorial. They are also eminently cultural. When Larbaud says “you are who you translate” (“Dis moi qui tu traduis, je te dirai qui tu es” – 1946: 95), he is obviously thinking of Brillat-Savarin’s aphorism, “you are what you eat” (“Dis moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai qui tu es” – [1825] 2017, Aphorisme IV, p. 19). Each has long been an object of investigation in the humanities and beyond, and the recent growth of research in the field of Translation Studies has been mirrored in the field of Food Studies. It seems curious that the complementary areas of investigation have not been combined more often. We have therefore decided to marry these two ingredients at an international conference to be held at the University of Lille, France, from 18 to 20 March 2020.

  Arabian Humanities No. 14 (Spring 2020)

  The literature on pop culture in the Arabian Peninsula is particularly thin. While a rich scholarship has analyzed oral culture and vernacular poetry, less ink was spilled on those forms of culture that use new media, from tape recording to mobile phone aps and from TV production to YouTube. This issue of Arabian Humanities seeks to fill that gap and to analyze pop culture in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

  Digital archiving in the Arab world acts as a major channel of knowledge transmission in the present day. As the practice grows, new archival challenges emerge and act as a catalyst for innovation and development of new technologies. The International Digital Archiving Conference in the Arab World is to be held in Abu Dhabi, October 26-27, 2019. It is the first Digital Archiving conference to be organized by the CEDEJ, Egypt (Centre d’études et de documentation économiques, juridiques et sociales) in collaboration with Bibliotheca Alexandrina and CEFAS (Centre français d’archéologie et de sciences sociales). The conference’s aim is to provide an exploratory gateway of the fast-growing interdisciplinaryfield of digital archiving in the Arab world.

  Established in 2016, the International Postgraduate Port and Maritime Studies Network brings together postgraduates working on port and maritime studies across a wide range of chronologies and geographies. The network is supported by the Centre for Port and Maritime History, a collaborative venture between The University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, and Merseyside Maritime Museum, which facilitates research on port cities and their relationship to maritime endeavour and enterprise. Our network is currently comprised of postgraduates from universities in the Basque Country, Crete, Hamburg and New South Wales, as well as from various institutions across the UK.

  What does carceral geography bring to carceral studies?

  19th Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology : convergent roads, bridges and new pathways in criminology

  The term ‘carceral geography’ describes a vibrant field of geographical and space-centred research into practices and institutions of incarceration, ranging from prisons to migrant detention facilities and beyond. Although rapid, its development is far outpaced by the expansion, diversification and proliferation of those strategies of spatial control and coercion towards which it is attuned. The dictionary definition of carceral is ‘relating to, or of prison’, but as Routley notes ‘carceral geography is not just a fancier name for the geography of prisons’. Carceral geography is in close dialogue with longer-standing academic engagements with the carceral, most notably criminology and prison sociology. Dialogue initially comprised learning and borrowing from criminology, but within a more general criminological engagement with spaces and landscapes  recent years have seen criminologists increasingly considering and adopting perspectives from carceral geography.

  Fake news. Counterfeit art and information: the manipulation of reality between artistic production and historical-critical investigation

  Il tema delle fake news è di grande attualità e rilevanza per i mezzi e i fini con cui queste vengono messe in circolazione: esse hanno il potere di alterare la realtà e diffondere notizie prive di fondamento. Invero, la manipolazione delle notizie e delle immagini è sempre stata presente nelle discipline umanistiche, mossa da intenti encomiastici, sociologici o politici. La giornata dottorale del 2019 vuole indagare la modalità in cui l’alterazione del messaggio è stata assunta come verità nella storia dell’arte. Si intende analizzare l’iter del processo artistico e la conseguente creazione delle fake news: così, dall’idea della committenza si passa all’elaborazione dell’artista fino ad arrivare alla ricezione del pubblico. L’oggetto artistico diventa, dunque, veicolo di una realtà alterata. Spaziando dall’antichità al contemporaneo, il convegno vuole mettere in risalto le diverse metodologie impiegate dai dottorandi per delegittimare le fake news nella storia dell’arte.

  The undisciplined discipline: the challenges of Pop Cultural Studies

  This call for paper is for a workshop which it itself included in this year's international symposium of the AFEA (Franch Association of American Studies) which will happen in Nantes, France from May 22 nd to the 24th. This year's main theme of the conference is "discipline/indiscipline." (event for which you can find more information here: http://www.afea.fr/-2019-AFEA-Conference-Discplines-Indiscipline-.html) This workshop intends to address and explore further this binary dichotomy through the prism of cultural studies, interrogating more precisely if the emergence of pop cultural studies is truly something to advocate for. Communications can tackle this issue from a more theoretical standpoint, but they can also deal with more precise case studies which would illustrate how pop culture and cultural studies are both defying disciplinary classifications. Communications can be either in French or in English.

CHAM’s team includes researchers from different disciplinary fields (Archaeology, Art History, Heritage, Literature, Philosophy and History of ideas), different domains of History (Economic, Cultural, Political, Social, Religious, History of Science and History of books and reading practices) and specialists from various geographic spaces. From 2015 to 2020, CHAM’s strategic project will focus on “frontiers”. This multi-disciplinary project considers frontiers as limits that distinguished, throughout history, a plurality of societies and cultures, but also as social and cultural constructs that promoted communication and interaction.

  Counter-enlightenment, Revolution and Dissent

  Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.
