Local vocabularies of “heritage”: Variations, Negotiations, Transformations
First congress of the Network of the Researchers on Heritagisations and the Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades da Universidade de Évora. The central idea of this symposium is to carry out an international comparison of vocabulary variants and local linguistic uses of "heritage", both in the context of contact with international institutions and in the limited one of indigenous and customary uses. The symposium therefore proposes to take seriously the emic definitions and redefinitions of "indigenous terms" and to draw up a critical inventory of them, by going beyond the fiction of a continuous and globalized homogeneous "heritage" field. A comparative analysis and the confrontation of related concepts in the different local vocabularies would also make it possible to get the measure of the transactions, mutations, misunderstandings and transfers that may arise from the global contact initiated in cultural exchanges over the last two centuries. -

Violence, Non-Violence and Religion
The Third Conference on Christian-Muslim Relations
Bethlehem University, with its tradition of building better relations between Christians and Muslims, according to its values as a Catholic LaSallian Palestinian University, is proposing a conference on Violence and Religion (9-11 February 2011) as a chance to discuss this difficult topic of the relationship between religion and violence. Although the topic may seem vast and complex, the multidisci-plinary approach allows for a better understanding of the topic and an informative exchange among scholars and interested people from all faiths. -

Émile Durkheim: sociology and ethnology

Approaches to post-Soviet transformations
Summer school in Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine)
Two decades after the collapse of the USSR, evolutionary paths travelled by post-Soviet societies are spectacularly diverse - posing analytical challenges for social scientists. In the first post-Soviet years, these societies were expected to “Westernize” and so social transformations were supposedly transitional. Later, it became obvious that genuine evolution observed in the former USSR needed genuine analytical tools. Dramatic change exhibiting a strange (at times conflict-ridden) coexistence of transformation and continuity neither elicits comparison to “normal” social evolution, nor can it be explained as a chaotic or un-analysable specificity. The aim of the summer school is to discuss different approaches / concepts used to analyse post-Soviet transformations and to question their heuristic effectiveness. The Summer School is designed to be interdisciplinary and international.
