Architecture of the Past: inspiration for the Future
Architecture, in response to universal needs, has developed in various forms, in diverse environments, and consequently offers a multiplicity of solutions. This diversity of construction types is of interest to numerous disciplines that do not often have the opportunity to exchange ideas. The aim of this interdisciplinary event is to bring together archaeologists, historians, architects, artisans, conservators, restorers, and ethnologists to share their work and research on architectural practices and structures that are relevant to approach current and future environmental, social, and economic challenges. This event will also discuss how the architecture of tomorrow is also invented with an eye to the past, whether it be sophisticated or vernacular, regardless of materials, period, or geographical and cultural area. A list of themes are suggested and detailed in the full call for proposal.

Trans, queer and “third gender” people in Muslim countries
Journal “Anthropology of the Middle East” (AME) – Issue 20.1 (Summer 2025)
Today, despite some prohibitions, more and more trans and queer people are asserting their gender identity in Muslim societies. Over and above the importance of gender binarity and spatial separation in Muslim countries, there are many historical figures of "third gender", to use the concept introduced by the anthropologist Gilbert Herdt. In the Muslim world, the term "third gender" generally refers to the eunuch of Ottoman harems, but there are many other figures in the Islamic context, varying from countries (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Egypt, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Albania...) and times. As the vocabulary and realities are plural, depending on the country and the period, the specificities of these figures and their names will be analyzed, as well as the ways in which these groups or individuals designate themselves. This issue will examine these figures collectively as a group (hijra, trans, queer...), and their role and social status, but will also look at them as individuals.

Summer University dedicated to Food and Drink Studies
Since 2003, our summer university has positionned itself as a leading platform for reflection on new research in Food Studies. After several thematic editions, this 2024 edition will continue its ambition to provide a resolutely broad overview of these fields of research from a multidisciplinary perspective. Over the last twenty years or so, new themes have emerged and given new impetus to research in food studies. How do they fit together within the various disciplines of humanities and social sciences, from anthropology and history to sociology and literary studies ? How can young researchers position themsleves in relation to the wide-ranging possibilities offered by this field of research ? Leading specialists from different disciplinary backgrounds will address these questions through the prism of their own research.

The aim of the symposium is to highlight recent developments in research on migrant activists, exploring the interactions between gender, political commitment and migration in the twentieth century. Proposals may focus on women's engagement, masculinities or gender relations in militant contexts. How does gender influence militancy in migration? And how do political commitment and migration influence gender relations and the construction of femininity and masculinity?

The Role of Women in Decorative Arts and Design in France (1850 to the Present)
Women played an important role in the history of decorative arts and design. Recent exhibitions (Here We Are! Women in Design 1900 – Today at the Vitra Museum in 2021 and Parall(elles): A History of Women in Design at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2023) displayed an overall approach of the question. But in some countries as France, what is the state of the issues and how is the contribution of women to be placed in this general context? This conference aims to discuss and to provide a state of research on the question but also to shed light on an aspect of artistic creation. It aims also to give an overview of the evolution and role of women in the decorative arts and design in France since the mid-19th century, in order to complete a current knowledge related to an ongoing field of research in the history of art and creative industries.

By choosing to focus on South-North circulations, this seminar is dedicated to the deconstruction of the “British Empire” as a homogeneous category to write and think about the intellectual, artistic, and political histories of the people who circulate and inhabit this polity known as the Commonwealth of Nations in the post-Bandung era. Working from the assumption that committed artists, intellectuals and political activists from the Global South have networked and connected within this space, we seek to interrogate the counter-hegemonic nature of the knowledge, theories and artistic practices produced during the post-Bandung era. We thus call for the study of the circulation and transfers of political and cultural ideas but also the intellectual trajectories of individuals, collectives and institutions.

The Tangier Zone Statute Centenary
Bringing together scholars from both sides of the Mediterranean, this conference aims to renew interest in the International Zone of Tangier (1925–56). It will take place 100 years to the day after France, Spain, and the United Kingdom signed the Zone’s constitutive treaty, known as the “Tangier Zone Statute”. The agreement, which was later joined by Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy, subjected Tangier to a special regime: although nominally an integral part of Morocco, the city and its surroundings were to a large extent subject to the joint administration of Western powers.

Seront acceptées les propositions qui analysent les changements matériels qui ont lieu dans la structure de la presse espagnole (économique ou politique) en relation avec les processus de démocratisation et d’intégration européenne ; les recherches qui analysent le contenu publié dans la presse sur la manière dont l’idée européenne est présentée aux Espagnols ; ainsi que les travaux qui étudient les profils individuels ou collectifs des personnes ou des groupes impliqués dans ces processus.

Climate Change and Human-Environment Interaction in the Caucasus
Geo-bio-archeological and literary perspectives
Joining forces between scientists of different disciplines and countries in order to register the various data about the human interaction with the environment in moments of crisis throughout history, should help us to prepare solutions for this near future. For a proper estimation of the whole chain of (probably catastrophic) events which could affect a country like Georgia, land of the Golden Fleece, we need to consider the whole circuit of the peak water, from the melting glaciers to the high mountain lakes, the river basins, their deltas and the sea. The climatic, geomorphologic, ecologic modellings must be related with ideas from arts and humanities as well as social sciences, in the longue durée, in order to anticipate the societal changes of the next generation. Based on our previous research on the geohistory and geobio-archaeology of the Black Sea, the Colchis lowlands, on rivers – including the mythical Phasis – and lakes, this meeting is intended as a kick-off for future international and interdisciplinary collaborations.

What does it mean to write “intimate” histories? Intimacy is a practice of both historical actors and historians, at once a field of experience and a methodological disposition. The rise of global history has birthed a renewed interest in the intimate as a vector of the situated and the individual in the midst of narratives often concerned with depersonalized processes and networks. The intimate does not displace the global or transnational but views these histories from a different vantage point, exploring their significance in the realm of the everyday and the sphere of meaning-making. The body and the material are its central agents, and intimacy has remained entwined with gender, offering scholars a way of asserting the significance of gendered relations and analyses to narratives and scales that may otherwise skirt their importance.

Immobilizing the Gaze: the Visual Fabrication of Events in the Early Modern Period
The aim of this conference is to build a transdisciplinary dialogue to explore how certain perceptions create certain images, convey information and its interpretation(s) around the “event”, broadly understood here as an occurrence perceived as significant, whether it is singular or part of a sequence or even a series of sequences (assassination, conclave, embassy, battle, jubilee, canonization...). The focus is placed on the early modern period because the increase of writing and the greater circulation of images and information “fixed” events on an unprecedented scale; often, these new ways of viewing events were forged thousands of kilometers away from the place where the event occurred. Rome and the Italian peninsula in the sixteenth century will be at the heart of our interrogations both as represented space(s) and as place(s) of projections onto the world.

Some Case Studies from the Roman and Late Antique Periods
The collection of case studies which were presented in 2018 and 2020 as part of the DANUBIUS project gave rise to a whole series of new historical questions and unexpected results. Some of the main elements of the dossier will be published in a supplement to the Frontière·s journal. The aim of this call for papers is to complete this dossier with some new cases studies, mainly for the regions that were not represented or less represented during the 2018 and 2020 workshops: Britain, Gaul, Germany, Caucasus, North-Eastern Anatolia, the Middle East and Egypt.

Colonialismes et colonialités : théories et circulations en portugais et français
“Colonialismos” e “colonialidades” são termos empregues no século XX para fazer referência à dinâmica que fundou o sistema-mundo capitalista a partir das colonizações europeias em todos os continentes, perpetuando na contemporaneidade práticas de subalternidades nascidas daquele contexto. Partindo destes dois termos, o colóquio apropria-se de um vocabulário comum: aquele em que a língua portuguesa e a língua francesa se difundiram pelo mundo. Este encontro apresenta os resultados de pesquisa do projeto Circulações da literatura pós-colonial em francês e em português (CILIPO-FP). O desafio de pensar as circulações entre dois sistemas linguísticos complexos e que implicam contextos e historicidades globais, foi lançado a catorze investigadoras e investigadores em 12 universidades, do Brasil, de Portugal e de França.

The public use of subordinate writings in the early modern and modern periods
We invite contributions dedicated to the dynamics of the re-signification of subaltern writings in public space in the early modern and modern period. Ordinary writings produced by subaltern actors (popular classes, men and women, childhood) in the transition from the private to the public sphere should therefore be investigated with particular attention to the spaces used, the practices adopted, the strategies of visibility (or obscuration) chosen, the appropriations by civil society, the policies of preservation of popular memory and the pedagogical- didactic use of writings.
