Migrating Off the Beaten Path. Europeans and the World at a Time of New Migratory Horizons (1750-1850)

Since 2023, the PIOMIG project “Pioneers of Global Migration (16th- 21st centuries)”, supported by the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme et de la Société - Sud-Est (MSHS-SE) and the Institut Convergences Migrations (ICM), has been studying so-called “pioneer” migratory phenomena, which lie upstream and on the margins of the major migratory currents already well identified in scholarly literature. After organizing a first workshop, which enabled us to better define this notion (https://epi-revel.univ-cotedazur.fr/publication/pionniers-migrations), we propose to convene a symposium on December 4, 5 and 6, 2025. This symposium will provide an opportunity to present the original material collected and analysed in recent years, and to compare it with other approaches and studies on related subjects.

    Economies of Renewal and Transformation

The "celebration" or post-crisis period is not merely a moment of festivity but an opportunity for tension release, reinvention, collective creativity, and the creation of new identities and relationships. This symposium proposes to examine how, from an economic and organizational perspective, societies reshape, rebuild, and find new avenues for transformation after times of crisis, both systemically and discursively.

    The world in crisis(es)

The word crisis, derived from the Greek word krisis, means judgment, decision. Conceptually speaking, “a crisis is an illness” (a conceptual metaphor justified diachronically by its etymological meaning of “the decisive phase of an illness”), or “it is a war”, if we focus on the meaning of “an outbreak with violent manifestations”. It is, therefore, a moment of major change. Our societies are plagued by successive and often overlapping crises, enabling them - if not forcing them -  to evolve and transform themselves. The conference will focus on two parallel and complementary themes: “The economic crisis / The economy of the crisis” and “Discourse in a time of crisis”.

Conservation-restoration of embroidered textiles from the Renaissane to the 19th century

    Technè, n°60, 2025-2

The study of embroidered textiles presents several points of interest: research may focus on the embroidery itself (materials, techniques, patterns), its supporting medium (nature, composition of materials, type of weaving), as well as the relationships between these two fields. We aim to identify topics of discussion by juxtaposing ancient texts with materials analysis; to present examples of the conservation of embroidered textiles with an emphasis on the choice of technical protocols; and to consider the difficult problem of exhibiting these rare and precious textiles.

Cicero’s Epistulae ad Brutum between politics, rhetoric and philosophy

    Lecturae Ciceronis 2025

The World of Silk Between France and Italy, 16th-19th Century

This workshop aims to consider Franco-Italian relations concerning silk from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century by fostering dialogue between research that has hitherto been separated by historiographical tradition, particularly combining history and art history. This interdisciplinary approach is all the more essential as it seeks to scrutinize through the same set of inquiries the entire silk production chain (from mulberry cultivation to fabric consumption, including thread manufacturing and preparation, pattern creation, and weaving). By revealing the importance of interdependencies among the various stages of the production and consumption process and the different actors within this industry, this approach leads to new considerations of the connections between the social worlds and the territories that silk interlinked.

    The Functions of Surrealism

As part of the celebrations for the centenary of Breton’s first Manifesto of Surrealism (1924), the Conference will explore the functions of Surrealism in aesthetic, poetic, ethical, and political terms, examining the Movement’s impact on several fields of knowledge. Going beyond the divisive approach either praising or criticising the Movement, the conference intends to explore Surrealism with a pragmatic approach, focussing on the variety of its effects. The focus will thus be on Surrealism as a cultural object, in the perspective of tracing a history of the narratives of the Movement with the aim less of assessing their “truth” but rather of understanding their scopes and assumptions. The approach will allow to reconsider the several forms of reception of Surrealism with a novel and interdisciplinary methodology, thus suggesting new reconsideration of the legacy of the Movement.

    Pastoral Academies. A global Phenomenon?

At the intersection between literature and socio-cultural history, but also between methods, the comparative and the historical-philological approach, this conference offers an opportunity for the study traditions of several countries, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Poland, to come together around a relatively new research subject: the pastoral academy. Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, throughout Europe and even in Latin America, writers, poets and scholars, men and women, took on the names of shepherds in pastoral literary academies. While some of these academies are well known (the Accademia dell'Arcadia in Rome, the Pegnesische Blumenorden in Nuremberg), the phenomenon was on an unsuspected scale and deserves to be explored in its global dimension.
