    Study days - Representation

Conspiracism and conspiracy theories, new objects, new issues

While conspiracism and conspiracy theories — along with the risks they entail — have become widespread in everyday discourse, they have only recently emerged as subjects of philosophical inquiry. What can philosophy bring to bear on these new objects of inquiry? How can we precisely define what is meant by conspiracism and conspiracy theory? How should we assess, justify, or question the critiques commonly leveled against them? What tools can philosophy offer in addressing conspiratorial discourse? This study day aims to engage with these questions, and is proud to welcome — for the first time in a French-speaking context — several authors who have pioneered the philosophical examination of these issues.

    CFP : Science-Friction

    23-24 octobre 2025

    Montage and artificial intelligence

The proliferation of machine vision systems and generative artificial intelligence (AI) models has recently transformed part of our visual culture, giving rise to new typologies of moving images that require us to re-examine certain key concepts. This international conference will explore the implications of AI algorithms and models on the concept and practice of montage, questioning its historical theories, analysis and gestures, as well as its forms and techniques in the field of generative images.

Maintaining public goods in an era of austerity

Espaces et Société n°200, march 2027

This special issue aims to highlight the spatial dimension of public goods maintenance and evolution in the context of austerity by adopting the spatial care perspective through three axes: 1) actors and practices involved in maintaining public goods; 2) maintaining public goods on a day-to-day basis; 3) the work and values of public goods. We encourage ethnographic and situated perspectives that consider top-down political experimentation, bottom-up urban practices and their convergence in the protection, maintenance and regeneration of public goods. This call is open to interdisciplinary, national and international contributions.

The Naturalist’s Wonder: Exploring Nature’s Marvels and Oddities

    Zoomathia Conference 2025

Nature is often aberrant, or at least so disconcerting that it would be a form of ignorance not to marvel at it. The nature of animals, like that of plants, « overflows on all sides »(Theophrastus). This call for papers is addressed to all those—historians of science, historians of texts, biologists—who are interested in what Aristotle described as « the non-ordinary order of nature, » in its most disconcerting manifestations. Presentations may focus on motifs of natural strangeness, whether in experience or history, addressing anatomical, physiological, or behavioral aspects, as well as fields such as communication, technical skills, or what is vaguely referred to as the « animal sixth sense. »

The Economies of War in the Medieval and Modern Periods

Social networks and the dynamics of constructing/deconstructing social identities

Identity issues are a pervasive concern in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the complexity and diversity of networks, including social networks, play a significant role in shaping and reshaping various forms of identity. The humanities and social sciences offer a critical framework for scholars to investigate the “weak ties” and “strong ties” generated by these networks, as well as the intersections and entanglements between social networks and the dynamics of identity construction and deconstruction in Cameroon.

Unspeakable Conflicts? Factional Conflict and Conflict Communication in the Premodern and Modern Eras

    Return(s) to Africa

Joint call for the journal Sources. Materials & Fieldwork in African Studies and the Revue d’histoire contemporaine de l’Afrique (RHCA)

This joint call for proposals for the journals Sources and RHCA welcomes original articles on the theme of return, or returns, to Africa. While differences exist according to time and place, what “returns” to Africa have in common is that they are not simply a physical return; they are also part of a political process and reflect a desire to reappropriate an ancestral African heritage, regardless of the ideological and institutional framework. Confronted with realities of African societies, “return” raises other questions, such as the status of foreigners and economic issues, and helps redefine political and cultural projects that are simultaneously local and transnational.

    Heroisms in times of war

Since the 2000s, scholarly interest in the concept of heroism has grown to the point where some now speak of heroism studies or heroism science. This emerging historiographical current now has a multidisciplinary academic journal, research centers, and even encyclopedias for American and German researchers. By considering these as complex phenomena, involving a variety of actors, tools, and horizons of expectation, we aim to decipher the elaboration of imaginary images of martial heroism.

Eastern Bloc Universities as a Meeting Place for International Youth during the Cold War

This study day on international mobility is part of the transnational turn in research on the Cold War, which in recent years has highlighted a certain permeability of the Iron Curtain. It will focus on the transnational movement of students. It will focus in particular on the universities of Eastern Europe as a place of sociability and cultural mixing, and as a meeting place for young people. It will look at the issues at stake and the ways in which these encounters take place, in order to understand their impact on the personal trajectories of these young people at a time when their identity and professional pathways are being forged.
