Conference, symposium - Prehistory and Antiquity
Bringing together specialists of the Ancient Near Eastern and Ancient Greek worlds, this international congress will discuss the appearance during the Iron Age I-II of new figures of power and of power management, opposing or presenting political alternatives to the ideologies and socio-economic functioning of the dominant power systems, thus leading, at times, to significant political changes. The debate may highlight the transformative capacity of ancient political systems, going beyond the usual opposition between the extreme conservatism recognized in Near Eastern despotisms, centralized but also often imperialist, and, on the other hand, the evolutionary tendency attributed to the political systems of the Greek world.

Decoding European History through Guns: Methodologies and Research Approaches
What are firearms? How did they impact on the history of European societies? What are the more promising research approaches for studying them? Firearms hold profound implications for European societies, influencing international relations, the diffusion of violence, and State sovereignty. This workshop will convene researchers examining themes such as the relationship between European States and guns, global efforts to regulate arms markets, the role of firearms in changing the societal perception of violence, and the semantic nuances defining these instruments. Through exploration of diverse research methodologies, the workshop aims to highlight the significance of firearms as both a subject of scholarly inquiry and a lens for examining critical aspects of contemporary history, shedding new light on the European past – one trigger pull at a time.

Digital democracy: promises and illusions
A stable and peaceful society is based on a solid and strong democracy. The democratic model is the future of any society that respects human rights. New information and communication technologies and the still poorly regulated advances in Artificial Intelligence have impacted not only all human activity, but have also contributed to reshaping the relationship with politics, citizen participation, political communication and politics. national and international. Digital democracy (or electronic, cyber, digital) is a political-social phenomenon which began to emerge around fifteen years ago in very diverse national contexts. Today, it is a tool that is used mainly for electoral expression intended for a fairly small number of citizens. The purpose of this international conference is to question the phenomenon of electronic democracy not only from an instrumental point of view (e-voting tool), but to question the conditions of possibility and possible limits.

Directions, sources & perspectives
How can we write the history of deserts? As "Desert Studies" are only beginning to attract the attention of scholarly communities across the English-speaking world, this conference examines the crucial issue of sources, and its articulation with key research questions relating to arid spaces around the world, with a particular interest in, but not limited to, the Sahara. Research engaging with the history of the Sahara Desert has taken new directions in recent years, notably around previously neglected issues such as mobility, networks, the emergence of new identities in Saharan countries following decolonization, or as part of new explorations of the relationships between colonised and colonisers. Drawing upon this growing historiography, ‘Writing the Desert’ aims to create a space for reflection around the fundamental material of all academic research: on the one hand, the archives which inform the work of the researcher, and on the other the questions around which their investigation is structured.

The Tangier Zone Statute Centenary
Bringing together scholars from both sides of the Mediterranean, this conference aims to renew interest in the International Zone of Tangier (1925–56). It will take place 100 years to the day after France, Spain, and the United Kingdom signed the Zone’s constitutive treaty, known as the “Tangier Zone Statute”. The agreement, which was later joined by Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy, subjected Tangier to a special regime: although nominally an integral part of Morocco, the city and its surroundings were to a large extent subject to the joint administration of Western powers.

Writing a Decentred and Entangled History of Cinema-Going
Epistemological and Methodological Issues
The aim of this conference is to shift the focus of the study of cinema, which is largely centred on Western Europe and the United States. It will bring to a close the 'Faire communauté(s) face à l'écran' research project (Université Paris Lumières, École universitaire de recherche ArTeC), which for three years has been examining the identities of cinema audiences and intermediaries involved in the exploitation and distribution of cinematographic entertainment in the twentieth century from a transnational and comparative perspective.

Climate Change and Human-Environment Interaction in the Caucasus
Geo-bio-archeological and literary perspectives
Joining forces between scientists of different disciplines and countries in order to register the various data about the human interaction with the environment in moments of crisis throughout history, should help us to prepare solutions for this near future. For a proper estimation of the whole chain of (probably catastrophic) events which could affect a country like Georgia, land of the Golden Fleece, we need to consider the whole circuit of the peak water, from the melting glaciers to the high mountain lakes, the river basins, their deltas and the sea. The climatic, geomorphologic, ecologic modellings must be related with ideas from arts and humanities as well as social sciences, in the longue durée, in order to anticipate the societal changes of the next generation. Based on our previous research on the geohistory and geobio-archaeology of the Black Sea, the Colchis lowlands, on rivers – including the mythical Phasis – and lakes, this meeting is intended as a kick-off for future international and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Safeguarding the health and safety of children in agriculture
Webinar 2023
Worldwide, agriculture is among the most dangerous industries and one of the few that consistently involves children. Whether children are working or merly present in the farm worksite, they are exposed to a wide array of agricultural-related hazards which results in these children experiencing high rates of injuries and fatalities compared to children in the general population. Understanding and addressing children health and safety issues in agriculture is important from a public health and child advocacy perspective. Safeguarding children in agriculture also connects back to the social and economic sustainability of farm labor systems. This webinar invites to shed light on the health and safety of children in agriculture in Northern and Southern countries with an emphasis on family farm systems and to support the development of a network of scholars and practitioners working on these topics.

Democratic Representation in and by International Organizations
International organizations (IOs) play a central role in contemporary international law-making: they institutionalize many of the processes through which international law is adopted today, be it through international law-making conferences, international courts or as IO secondary law. Yet, the question of democratic representation in IOs, but also by IOs when they become members of other IOs or intervene as participants in other international law-making processes remains difficult, to say the least.

Puissances du végéter dans la littérature et les arts des mondes francophones et anglophones (XIXe-XXIe siècle)
The aim of this international conference is to reflect on the active role of plants in texts and visual representations in the literature and arts of the anglophone and the francophone worlds from the nineteenth century to the present day. We will think about the aesthetic, political, and epistemological implications of this form of agency and analyse the way in which plants act upon and with the human world from an anthrodecentric perspective. We will look at how plants can organise or disorganise our world, call into question established truths, and shape power relations, including political ones.

Aesthetics & Critique VI
Back to Reality! Whether in art or philosophy, recent years have witnessed an outright run on the real, under banners such as speculative realism, neo-materialism, documentality, eco-realism, speculative poetics, or object-oriented aesthetics. Only progressively it starts to become clear that what these approaches respectively mean by realism differs sharply. The workshop shall confront various epistemic and artistic strategies seeking to grasp the ever-evading nature of reality, and work towards understanding the reasons behind this renewed desire for touching the “thing itself”. If the only claim these different realisms seem to agree upon is the need to decentre the human perspective, could it be that perspectivalness itself provides a key to a novel understanding of reality?

Merchants, arts, luxury and beauty
The long-distance, large-scale luxury trade or the promotion of the arts by merchants are extremely important elements in the evolution of our contemporary societies. What were the legal and institutional strategies on the topic of the judicial history of commerce? Tax privileges, protection of individuals and property, are just a few examples of regulatory interventions in the European and extra-European luxury trade. The private legal sphere is no less interesting: contractual relations between individuals in this area, the regimes of pacts between parties, the value given to goods and merchandise in the identification of the price of obligations, are all aspects of fundamental importance for understanding the legal dynamics that have shaped European legal culture.
