    Risk at work

    Literary paradigms and research perspectives

Negociating images. Dialogical photography practices in anthropology

    Civilisations journal (vol. 75, 2026)

This special issue will explore dialogical photographic practices in which the image becomes a space for exchange. Photographers, like ethnologists, play a role of mediator who stimulates collective understanding. More than a mere document, photographs here are perceived as a relationship and a site for the co-construction of meaning. This approach invites us to think differently about methodologies and the restition of ethnographic works. At the heart of our reflection is the question of what methods are put into place, and the issue of power and control overs images, alongside the ethical and economic implications of collaborative approachs used by visual anthropology. We invite potential contributors to explore innovative forms of visual narration, for example those that make use of dialogical presentations, multimedia practices, pratical use of archives, or even digital tools, in particular open-source ones.

Praise for the historian’s craft: What's new?

Or historical experience and its epistemological sublimation

Taking the example of Marc Bloch as its starting point, this workshop is not intended as a tribute to the man he was, nor as an exegesis of his work. Rather, it invites us to engage in a kind of role-playing, in which we take up Marc Bloch's question: are we in a position to propose new appraisals for the historian’s craft? This workshop is organized around two major themes: the epistemology of history today, and the experience lived by the professional researcher in troubled times.

    Situated-design : issues and perspectives

Situated-design can be defined as a new approach to design that is part of a contextual dynamic in which creation and design take full account of: materials, know-how, social practices, and the uses of territory, landscapes and environments, as active elements in the design process. In opposition to the dominant productivist model of industrial design, situated design is particularly distinguished by its commitment to preserving and enriching environments.

African Arts during the Second World War: Spoliations, Destructions, Displacements

The contemporary focus on African cultural property looted during the colonial period has served to shift the focus back to African artefacts as central to the historical issues of the twentieth century. However, the question remains as to whether this assertion extends to the Second World War period. In the context of contemporary research into objects from colonial contexts and those looted between 1933 and 1945, the fate of African works during this period remains an unresearched subject. This study day will shed light for the first time on the multiple consequences of the war on African art, including its commercialisation, movement and disappearance, both in Africa itself and in Europe.

Literature in the face of Collective Blindness

    « Post-Scriptum » Journal #40

This issue invites reflections on what remains unseen today. How does literature work to unsettle these zones of invisibility? We aim to explore the power of literary writing: its role in dissolving certainties, in shifting perception, in reshaping what can be felt and understood. How does it bring to light what has been pushed into the margins, what might resurface tomorrow as a source of collective shame? How do writers confront and resist this selective perception, navigating silence and opacity? What literary strategies allow them to be heard, to be taken seriously, without their texts being swallowed by incomprehensibility?

Bone objects during the Roman and Early Byzantine periods

Colloquia Anatolica et Aegaea, congressus internationales Smyrnenses XV

Ancient bone objects have been found in relatively large quantities in the entire Mediterranean, from Spain to Syria and Egypt to France, where they were manufactured between the Neolithic and Medieval periods. The art of carving animal bones involves especially antler and horn. However, the spectrum of the worked bone objects recovered from Anatolia, rest of the eastern Mediterranean, Near East, the Black Sea area and Balkans is very varied, and reflects different characteristics of Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine daily life. In these areas they were also utilised as grave goods secondarily. They were exported or imported over the entire ancient Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine worlds. In this conference papers dealing with ancient artefacts or objects manufactured by bone, antler, ivory, animal teeth, mother of pearl and cockleshell are included. Focus will be on bone objects between the first century B.C. and the sixth century A.D.

    Dancing (with technology)

“Intermediality. History and Theory of the Arts, Literature, and Technologies” no. 48 (Fall 2026)

This issue of Intermediality aims to theorize dance (as genre, practice, and idea) from within historical and contemporary entanglements of bodies, media, affects, and values. We are seeking contributions from scholars, choreographers, technicians, and dancers in either essay format or a more creative form, with a focus on projects that involve dance and today’s new and emergent media, such as virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR), robotics, motion capture technology (mocap), AI applications, and other animative and choreographic interfaces. We especially welcome submissions that engage with disability, critical race, and gender studies, and research-creation approaches. Scholars wishing to focus on earlier historical examples of the intersection of dancing and technology are also encouraged to apply.
