L’objectif est d’encourager les études qui explorent les idées, les images et les débats autour du colonialisme et des réalités coloniales mobilisées par les périodiques d’exil, tant dans leur diversité que mettant en exergue les convergences et les divergences.

This issue of Slaveries & Post-Slaveries examines the repercussions of the transatlantic matrix of race on post-slavery societies. Particular attention will be paid to societies on the African continent, as the racial logics operating within them have rarely been studied. We understand racial logics as the assumption that supposed physical and cultural differences between groups are “inherited” from one generation to the next.

From limits to margins. Periphery(s) in stories and imaginarie Latin American contemporaries

This number attempts to define what the margins and peripheries are today in the imaginaries, stories, human sciences and cultural fields of the Americas. If the twentieth century saw, in most countries of Latin America, as it was about defining a cultural norm (which or not took over from the colonial period, whether or not integrating elements of pre-Hispanic history), also appeared increasingly affirmed countercultures and peripheral cultures. With digitalization, which occurred at the beginning of our century, a strong acceleration of the movement was noted. It is then worth asking what a peripheral/marginal culture may be, as well as looking for a way to define it. Another primary issue is knowing how (and by whom) these currents can be represented. In a somewhat binary conception of social, geographic and creative space, one would obviously have to oppose the notions of normativity and centrality to the margins.

Crime and Society: historical dynamics in contemporary times

Crime, its practice and its repression arouse great attention and curiosity in our days. Reported and investigated by the media, literature or cinema, among others, crime is currently a constant presence in our daily life. In the field of History, particularly in Social History, crime has established itself as a relevant topic of study, especially since the second half of the 20th century and, since then, several lines of research have been pursued and explored. This issue of Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal is looking for contributions that reflect on Crime and Society in the 19th and 20th centuries.

“The body of an athlete and the soul of a sage - these are what we require to be happy”, wrote Voltaire to Helvetius. At RITA, although we don’t claim to have athletic bodies, we humbly hope that our journal does lead to the path of wisdom. As Paris will host the Olympic Games in 2024, we thought it relevant to invite researchers to show wisdom and gain some critical distance to question the role and function of sports in the Americas, from North to South.

Interdisciplinary Franco-Latin-American perspectives on challenges related to the environment
Since the 1970s, environmental issues have continued to grow. Indeed, we have moved from a localized perception of environmental damage to a global understanding of the risks associated with climate change and their impacts on socio-ecosystems. In order to better respond to the challenges and stakes of the environmental crisis that is impacting us, it seems appropriate to share and make known the experiences and theories developed from different continents, cultures and geographies in order to enrich our object of study. In this regard, this Congress, which will be held from October 23 to 27, 2023 in Costa Rica, proposes to offer perspectives on multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies on environmental issues: climate change, biodiversity, resilience, global health, payments for environmental services, etc.

In Western space, mapping the Other is not a prescriptive notion to assign ossified identities. Rather, it is about questioning the link between these intersectional identities of otherness and the specificities of the various Western spaces. In other words, it invites a reconsideration of how the Others autonomously define themselves in the dominant and marginal spaces of the “normative order” of hegemonic societies, and how they integrate them to make them theirs—therefore challenging the systems of oppression implemented.

Cuando decidimos abordar el estudio de la “literatura africana”, nos enfrentamos a una serie de problemas, en tanto campo complejo de tensiones, de núcleos constitutivos, de perspectivas, inherentes a toda etiqueta formada por la palabra literatura y un gentilicio. Una dificultad no menor la encontramos en los planes de estudios de las carreras de Letras en Argentina cuyo “patrón cognitivo” (Quijano 2017) aún persiste dentro de los rasgos de un patrón de poder fundado en la colonialidad: el centro no ha sido del todo desplazado, para decirlo con wa Thiong’o (2014). El eurocentrismo académico en nuestro país perdura en el escaso interés que el pensamiento africano y afrodiaspórico ocupa en las carreras de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales, con destacadas excepciones siempre individuales o colectivas pero rara vez institucionale.

In this volume, we would like to analyze in depth the paths taken by the 20th and 21st century Latin American and Caribbean letters in relation to the experience of the black diaspora in dialogue with the visual arts, as well as in relation to the main themes, forms and techniques used by artist, playwrights, poets, storytellers and writers. In a context of increasing violence and intolerance towards minorities in Latin America, we will welcome analyses that focus on the relationship between literature and the resistance of the cultures created by the black diaspora.

Missionary strategies and practices, slavery and forced labour (early 19th-mid 20th century)
Another discussion on the institutional position of the churches in relation to slavery will be resolutely avoided. What will be analysed is the concrete confrontation —or cohabitation— with slavery. What did missionaries know about their slave environment? How did they learn about it? How did they take a stand? How did they act–or not? Same questions as far as indentured labour and the colonial forms of forced labour were concerned. Were there confrontations, mediations and misunderstandings?

In Latin America, violence is ubiquitous producing fear and anguish, and these emotions can be contagious. Fear and anguish are intrinsically related to terror, and they can take place both at a collective level and at an individual level. Many authors use terror to deal with subjects such as politics, family, violence, poverty, public security, social radicalization, the body and the feminine condition.

Gender in Slave and Post-Emancipation Societies in Global Contexts

The last two decades have witnessed an uptick in the production of scholarly literature concerning enslaved, emancipated, and free women in slave societies in the Atlantic World. More recently, scholars have also begun to examine femininity and masculinity, nonbinary gender expression, nonnormative sexualities, and the family as lenses through which to understand the making and maintaining of those societies. In this special issue of Esclavages & Post-Esclavages / Slaveries & Post-Slaveries, the editors seek to build on and extend this work by focusing on gender, as an analytical frame and category, in slave and post-emancipation societies beyond and/or in comparison with the Atlantic basin. We aim to understand the influence of Atlantic world scholarship on global slave studies, while also attending to contextual distinctions outside of the Atlantic context.

In this issue of RITA, we wish to question the production of these phenomena that are calledcrises, from “laissez-faire” to “negligence”; from the banalization of the crisis in media oracademic discourse to the enunciation processes of public authorities. In “times of crises”, theywill justify more directly the imposition of social, economic or even military measures.

The world of sports in the Americas and their political, cultural and social representations

Sporting events mark the center of interest in the social life for many countries in the world. However, if we focus on the Americas, this importance is even more obvious. Sport becomes a reason for encounter, community, and connection. It brings out levels of interest and reinforces local, regional or beyond that, the game that is often unparalleled. Few people escape the passion that surrounds a country in the face of success in global competitions. This phenomenon, based on collective pride, pushes boundaries and includes even the most critical viewers. Can we consider this contradiction one of the keys to success?

XIIIe congrès international de l’« International association of word and image studies » (IAWIS) / Association international pour l’étude des rapports entre texte et image (AIERTI)
The 13th International Conference of the International Word and Image Association (IAWIS) will take place between 28 August and 01 September 2023 in hybrid mode at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Next year's conference will focus on the concept of sedimentation in word-image studies. The term, in its literal and metaphorical sense, will allow us to examine historical, theoretical and thematic issues that cross cultural, literary and artistic productions, and to consider the tensions, articulations, oscillations that intertwine the word and the image.
