New Historiographical Perspectives
Post-truth, fake news, infodemic, virality, soft power, hybrid warfare, political technology, influencer... New expressions intermingle with old ones – suggestion, propaganda, disinformation, manipulation, censorship – to describe the alarming evolution of various manipulative practices. These new terms and warnings often obscure the continuity of older practices and their shared origins. By adopting an integrative and multidisciplinary approach, this conference brings together researchers studying practices of influence across different times and places, with a shared commitment to historicising these phenomena.

(The Rise of) TransMedia 'Empires,' 1920s-1960s

Media at the crossroads between reality and fiction (from Ancient Times till present)
With the growing contemporary concerns about fake news and deep fakes, the questionof the decreasing space between fiction and non-fiction has become central. But at the same time, new genres and hybrids that play a different game are also proliferating: telling the truth underthe guise of fiction, using a fictional guise (the conventions of specific narrative genre) to ‘better’tell the truth as in self-fiction, animated documentaries, etc. The 25th Annual Conference of the French Society for Media History (Société pourl’Histoire des Médias, SPHM) is intended to explore the ambiguous connections andinterrelations between reality and fiction in media productions of any kind, any time period andany country.

Call for papers - Representation
Writing for, in and about film and audiovisual productions

From the 1880s to the 1980s, student dissidence/resistance in Central-Eastern and Southeastern Europe often came into contact with protest movements in other parts of the world, combining social protest with political and civic struggles. The aim of this conference is to study the dissident/resistant student press produced both in Central-Eastern and Southeastern Europe and by students from these countries abroad.

Ethnic and Religious Minorities and their Media in the English-speaking world
This one-day conference, organized by GRER-ICT Les Europes dans le monde (UR 337, Université Paris Cité) and IHRIM (Université Clermont Auvergne) is dedicated to illuminating a crucial yet underexplored area: the media (written press, radio, television, internet, etc.) of ethnic and/or religious minorities in Great Britain, the United States, South Africa, and other English-speaking countries. These minority media, operating on the fringes of the dominant mainstream media, are not just a significant platform, but also an essential lifeline for the ethnic and/or religious minorities they represent.

Infrastructures, Practices, Publics
Small textual and material forms seem particularly adept at circulating within and between different publics. This conference investigates how the movement of brief, compressed, and otherwise small forms ranging from early modern pamphlets to Instagram stories shape the development of diverse publics, as well as the interplay between them. We propose to explore the relationship between small forms and publics through three related strands of inquiry: how infrastructures affect the circulation of small forms, how practices including remediation enable their circulation, and how the circulation of small forms shapes the formation, operation, and dissolution of public life.

Polarisation of British and American societies
Causes, consequences, perspectives
The growing polarisation within American and British societies raises profound questions about the mechanisms by which public opinion is influenced and the political and social transformations that ensue. This polarisation expresses itself at several levels, notably between different age groups, between levels of education, and between urban and rural areas. We assume here that the apparent polarisation of US and UK societies has increased in recent years, not least due to the rise to power and tenure of Donald J. Trump in the US and the vote in favour of Brexit in the UK. The aim will be to understand how these two events have acted as catalysts reinforcing divisions already present and creating new forms of divisions.

Rebuilding a History: Indigenous books and print material in Québec
Mémoires du livre/Studies in Book Culture, vol. 16-no. 1 / Spring 2025
Shedding light on the stakes involved in Indigenous print material and books from the perspective of a history of the book captures the colonial dynamics at work in this literary milieu while highlighting the decolonization movements also taking place there. Despite significant increases in facilities and events dedicated to Indigenous books and print material, up until now few academic works have addressed the historic and contemporary dynamics around the field of Indigenous books in Québec. It is these dynamics that the present issue of Mémoires du livre / Studies in Book Culture aims to address.
