KU Leuven is advertising a four-year PhD position at the Faculty of Arts as part of the FWO-funded project “Languages writing history: the impact of language studies beyond linguistics (1700-1860)”. The aim of this project is to study the history of the language sciences and the formation of linguistics as a discipline from a ‘post-disciplinary’ point of view.

Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)

The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

Encounters with subalternity and resilience

The Research Network on Christian Churches, Culture and Society (www.ccsce.eu) fosters historical research on the interaction of religion, culture, and society in Europe from the second half of the eighteenth-century until the present. CCSCE aspires to a renewed approach to religious history, implementing a broad and transnational European perspective. It aims to develop a durable and multidisciplinary research community on the subject, involving both senior and promising young scholars. On 6 and 7 July 2020 CCSCE, in cooperation with KADOC-KU Leuven, is organising an international conference on Religion, social commitment, and female agency. 7th biennial conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM 2020)

Notions of crisis have long charged the study of the European avant-garde and modernism. Throughout their history, avant-gardists and modernists have faced crises, be they economic or political, scientific or technological, aesthetic or philosophical, collective or individual, local or global, short or perennial. Modernists and avant-gardists have in turn continually stood accused of instigating crises, whether artistic or cultural, sensorial or conceptual, incidental or intentional, far-reaching or negligible, representational or other. The very concepts of ‘avant-garde’ and ‘modernism’ are time and again subject—or subjected—to conceptual crises, leaving modernism and avant-garde studies as a field on the perpetual brink of a self-effacing theoretical crisis. The 7th biennial conference of the EAM intends to tackle the ways in which the avant-garde and modernism in Europe relate to crisi/es.

Islamic Schools in Europe

Many Muslim organizations, local mosques and associations establish formal or informal, private and publicly funded extra-curricular Islamic classes in order to transmit Islamic culture and tradition to their next generation. In addition to these extra-curricular Islamic activities organized by local associations and mosques, the opening of Islamic schools diversifies and strengthens this transmission of Islamic tradition and faith for Muslims in Europe in various countries. The aim of this conference is to present an overview of private and publicly funded Islamic schools in Europe and more specifically to understand a comparative analysis of these schools, their education system and the government policies related to the Islamic schools.

Historical debates on health and social care provision during the 19th and 20th centuries

Present debates in European countries on the balance of responsibilities in health and social care often refer to historical practices and models, such as home care traditions and longstanding informal solidarity systems. But a genuine historical perspective on these matters is usually lacking. This workshop wants to explore this topic by comparatively reflecting on a set of historical debates concerning the balance of responsibilities in health and/or social care in the 19^th and 20^th centuries. Le colloque s’intéresse aux conceptions que les corporations de métiers ont propagé jadis, en dehors du champ strictement matériel de leur activité de production. On songe au souci du ‘bien commun’, à la moralité, à la protection des veuves et des orphelins des membres, à la place des confrères pauvres, aux activités dévotionnelles et religieuses, à la transmission de connaissances et à la formation, aux manifestations communau-taires dans l’espace public et à une sociabilité liée au groupe professionnel.

Elites and Leisure: Arenas of Encounter in Europe (1815-1914)

The history of the nobility in Europe is well researched. For most European states comprehensive works inform on the “rise and fall” of the historical formations which dominated the continent well into the 20^th century and in some respects play important roles until today. However, the question of how the European nobilities succeeded or failed in retaining their social position often obscured the many manifestations of border-transcending sociability amongst old and new elites. These encounters and interactions were in most countries still dominated by the old aristocracy but – in more or less successful ways - also integrated new intellectual, technical or artistic elites or even saw the latter in the driver’s seat. This workshop will look at one specific category of places where old and new elites were linked, arenas where these groups not only met and interacted but also where the rules and conventions for new elites were forged.

European Muslim's Participation in (New) Media

The increasing growth of the Internet is reshaping Islamic communities worldwide. Non-conventional media and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are becoming more popular among the Muslim youth as among all parts of the society. The new channels of information and news attract new Muslim publics in Europe. The profile of the people using these networks range from college students to Islamic intellectual authorities. Such an easy and speedy way of connecting to millions of people across the globe also attracts the attention of social movements, which utilize these networks to spread their message to a wider public. Many Muslim networks and social movements, political leaders, Islamic institutions and authorities use these new media spaces to address wider Muslim and also non-Muslim communities, it is not uncommon that they also address and reach certain so-called radical groups.

Ce poste à temps plein a pour objectif de mener à bien une thèse de doctorat qui s’inscrira dans le cadre du projet de recherche « La Fabrique du patrimoine littéraire. Les collections d’essais biographiques illustrés en France (1944-2014) », financé par le FWO (Fonds de la recherche scientifique, Flandre : http://www.fwo.be/). Le / la candidat(e) aura à réaliser une thèse de doctorat portant sur les « Albums de la Pléiade » (Gallimard). La recherche visera à étudier les spécificités des « Albums de la Pléiade » dans le système des collections de ce type en en faisant l’histoire et en proposant une analyse de la façon particulière dont ces biographies illustrées sont conçues, sur les plans générique et iconographique en particulier.
