  Liberation struggles, the “falling of the empire” and the birth [through images] of African nations

  The fortieth anniversary of Portuguese decolonisation of Africa has acted as a catalyst in discussing how Portugal “imagined” colonial politics through moving images and how these propagandist portrayals began to be questioned by the Portuguese “Novo Cinema”. This can be seen in works that were censured and prohibited. Portuguese colonial cinematographic representations were later challenged by films made in the context of the liberation movements and by images that emerged out of the national cinematographic projection (Frodon) of the new Portuguese-speaking African countries. This conference intends to go some way in highlighting common aspects in the emergence of cinema in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, which have all been studied individually.

  La revue Histoire & Mesure (Paris, CRH-EHESS), en collaboration avec le Centre for economic history (University of Reading), lance un appel à contributions sur le thème « La démesure de l’État. Contrôle et/ou transparence des finances publiques dans l’Europe des 17^e-19^e siècle ». Les contributions seront discutées dans le cadre d’une journée d’études organisée au printemps 2014 et destinée à être publiée sous forme de numéro thématique par la revue.

  Through a multidisciplinary approach that brings together history, politics, literature, legal studies and international relations, this conference re-examines the significance of 18 April 1948. It assesses in what ways the legacies of WWII, of the fascist regime and of Liberal Italy have influenced the foundation of the new Italian Republic and to what degree 1948 can be seen as a 'watershed in the history of Italy'.
