  Pathos. Forms and fortunes of literary emotions

  The goal of this summer school is to explore the role of emotions in literature, namely with respect to the excess of pathos in different forms and times. Pathos has been a fundamental aspect of literature in every epoch. Great poetry has always foregrounded its ability to represent feelings, evoke intense and vivid moods, and elicit readers’ emotions and empathy. On the other hand, the novel – the genre dominating literary modernity – has been o!en accused of indulging in sentimental excess, giving too much space to melodramatic expression. Indeed, in Western cultures, there is a widespread suspicion towards pathos, which has o!en been identified as a shortcoming of literature. Great books – according to a common implicit assumption – can prompt reflection and laughter, but not tears: pathos only concerns lowbrow production. The summer school is an opportunity to engage in a reflection on issues related to pathos in literature in the last few centuries. Different perspectives will be taken into account: specific literary works, reader response theory, cognitive narratology, transmedia adaptation, and publishing history.

  Family morphologies: Leone and Natalia Ginzburg in Italian and European literature and culture

  Focusing on the works by Leone (1909-1944) and Natalia Ginzburg (1916-1991) the Summer School is dedicated to a reflection on the authors’ contribution to the 20th century Italian and European history. Besides a critical analysis of their creative and intellectual activity and their civic engagement, the participants will have the opportunity to debate the role both Leone and Natalia had in the publishing house Einaudi, and to experiment new methods of teaching literature. The program includes 3 plenary lessons and 5 seminars. Special guest: Carlo Ginzburg.Language of the activities: Italian.

  Figures littéraires de la haine

  Rhétorique et sémantique d’un sentiment public

  Des Philippiques aux textes contemporains, la littérature a toujours été un formidable moyen pour exprimer une haine collective, que celle-ci soit politique, religieuse, raciale ou encore patriotique. On trouve dans la littérature française des exemples particulièrement significatifs de ce genre de discours auxquels il faut souvent reconnaître, au-delà de leur intérêt historique, une remarquable teneur esthétique.
