  Using the Past: The Middle Ages in the Spotlight

  The conference aims at bringing together scholars from all around the world concerned with the uses of the medieval past. Participants will address when, where, how, why and by whom the medieval past has been used, with papers embracing a broad chronological timeline that begins in the medieval period itself and extends to include contemporary politics, society and mass media. Thus, this conference seeks to provide a forum for scholars who are willing to examine and to advance knowledge on the use of the medieval past, contributing to a better assessment of contemporary realities, problems and challenges.

  Ces dernières décennies ont été marquées par le développement d'études sur la culture matérielle, en privilégiant une approche inter et multidisciplinaire. Ce regard a permis une lecture plus intégrée de la manière dont l’homme médiéval a interagi, a manipulé, a adapté et a transformé  son environnement matériel. De ce fait, des visions plus foisonnantes virent le jour sur les  utilisations qu’il donna aux objets qu’il produisait, les significations qu’il leur attribuait, la manière dont il les a utilisées au niveau cognitif et affectif.

  A hidráulica em edifícios monumentais

  O sistema hidráulico é um subsistema arquitetónico que só pode ser compreendido atendendo à constituição dual da sua estrutura: a que se situa ao nível do solo, referente à água potável (subsistema hidráulico inferior); e a que concerne às águas pluviais (subsistema hidráulico superior). Ambos implicam aspetos de importância capital para o funcionamento de qualquer edifício: captação, distribuição e evacuação das águas. Na última década foram realizados trabalhos de investigação sobre a componente hidráulica da arquitetura histórica monumental, religiosa e civil, considerando as questões técnicas e as de caráter artístico, não só em Portugal, como também na Europa

  Loci Sepulcralis

  Pantheons and other places of memory and burial in the Middle Ages

  This International conference will be devoted to Medieval Pantheons. The main aim is to promote a broad and innovative debate on the concept of “pantheon” throughout the Middle Ages, as well as their underlying intentions. It is also intended to address the specificity of themes that are intertwined with the construction, ornamentation and everyday uses of these spaces by the communities that host them.

  Wisdom and science in the (Iberian) Middle Ages

  Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia (CIUHCT) and Mosteiro of Batalha present the conference “Wisdom and science in the (Iberian) Middle Ages”. A day dedicated to medieval knowledge, with renowned international speakers. The keynote speaker will be Professor Charles Burnett of the Warburg Institute, London.
