  All the Beauty of the World. The European Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)

  In the wake of the Western expansion, a fast growing number of non-European artefacts entered the European market. They initially made their way into princely cabinets of curiosities. Enabled by the forced opening and exploitation of more and more parts of the world and pushed by social and technological changes of the time, the 18^th century brought a boom of the market of non-European artefacts in Europe. This came along with the emergence of a broader collecting culture and the development of a rich museumscape. This market and its development in terms of methods and places of exchange and monetary and ideological value of the objects are in the focus of an international symposium that will take place in October 2016 in Berlin.

  Herder et les arts

  Esthétique, théorie et histoire

  Dans l'histoire de la pensée esthétique, les travaux de J. G. Herder (1744-1803) ont une importance centrale. Herder est en effet un lecteur assidu des théories de l'art produites par les auteurs de l'Antiquité et par les penseurs européens des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Contemporain de Diderot, Lessing et Winckelmann, inspirateur du jeune Goethe, Herder réfléchit tant sur l'histoire des arts que sur les fondements et limites de l'esthétique que Baumgarten, vers 1750, avait cherché à constituer en discipline philosophique à part entière. Le présent colloque cherche à éclairer les principaux textes que Herder a consacrés à l'histoire et à la théorie des arts.

  L'art et la faculté de sentir

  Colloque au Centre Marc Bloch

  Enquête sur la généalogie de la cognition artistique dans l'esthétique française et allemande du XVIIIe siècle. Colloque organisé par Elisabeth Décultot et Gerhard Lauer au Centre Marc Bloch, Berlin. En «inventant» l'esthétique, les penseurs de l'Aufklärung allemande esquissent une nouvelle représentation de l'homme, dans laquelle la sensibilité joue un rôle inédit. D'une faculté animale, commune à l'homme et à la bête, la sensibilité devient une faculté spécifiquement humaine et même la clef d'une compréhension de l'homme dans son entier. Cette mutation a des préludes et des prolongements en France. La présente rencontre s'attachera à éclairer la généalogie de l'esthétique au XVIIIe siècle et à étudier le rapport de la pensée esthétique avec les recherches contemporaines sur les mécanismes de la cognition.

  Ottoman Urban Studies Seminar 2008-2009

  Daily Life in Ottoman Towns

  What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
