Five research assistant positions for the project "Decoding Antisemitsm"

For a 3-year research project on anti-semitic hate speech and hate images on the internet, research assistants are wanted. A qualitative linguistic content analysis of social media comments and analysis of image material and text-image relationships related to antisemitic content is planned. In addition, quantitative linguistic methods will also be applied to the social media corpus. For the country teams we are seeking two doctoral students for the English language area, two for the French language area and one for the German language area.

Scholarships in Berlin - Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives

The Study Foundation of the House of Representatives is a grant programme for young researchers from the United States of America, Great Britain, France, and the successor states of the Soviet Union, who want either to work on Berlin along with German as well as German-international issues or to use research facilities in Berlin. The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives shall contribute to the further development of a generation of young scholars from the aforementioned states whose research issues deal with Berlin or Germany. Moreover, the young researchers shall use their stay in Berlin in order to make themselves familiar with the political and social system in Berlin and Germany, and build lasting relationships between themselves and with the Berlin House of Representatives. Thus, the Foundation seeks to awaken or strengthen long-term interest in and understanding of Germany in the aforementioned states.

Figuren und Perspektiven auf die Masse und das Individuum in der kapitalistischen Moderne (XIX-XXI Jh.)

Ist es möglich, den Begriff der masse zu verwenden, ohne in eine vollständige Verurteilung des kollektiven Handelns oder in eine unreflektierte Aufwertung zu verfallen? Sollten wir immer noch an der Opposition zwischen der Masse und dem Individuum festhalten? Das Verhältnis zwischen Masse und Individuum kann unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten untersucht werden: Wie kann eine Masse sich als politisches Subjekt konstituieren? Mit welchen Mitteln und aus welchen Perspektiven stellen künstlerische Werke die Beziehung zwischen der Masse und dem Individuum dar und wie verändern sie diese? Welche Umgestaltungen erfährt die Masse als Objekt der Sozialwissenschaften? Wie wirkt sich die kapitalistische Moderne auf die moralische und psychische Autonomie der Individuen aus?

Thinking about violence in Africa through women’s experiences: vulnerability & subversion

Penser la violence en Afrique au travers de l’expérience des femmes: vulnérabilité et subversion

Les deux journées du « Junges Forum » seront consacrées à penser la violence en Afrique au travers de l’expérience des femmes dans une perspective interdisciplinaire. L’objet ici n’est pas de se concentrer sur l’expérience passive, pour peu qu’elle existe, de la violence. Il s’agit bien ici de s’intéresser à la manière de l’appréhender, de la retranscrire, de la faire sienne et de la renverser, qu’elle soit symbolique, sociale, domestique, épistémique, politique ou sexuelle. Le « Junges Forum » vise à accueillir des communications de jeunes chercheur.euse.s (doctorant.e.s et postdoctorant.e.s) pour permettre des échanges interdisciplinaires et discussions ouvertes sur la thématique. Les communications de différents champs de la recherche scientifique (anthropologie, études cinématographiques, études sur le genre, psychologie, sciences historiques, sciences littéraires, sociologie, etc.) devront exclusivement se concentrées sur les aires géographiques du continent africain.

Forschungsassistent wmd Working Futures - Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin

Das Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin e.V. – Institute for Advanced Study ist eine unabhängige, von den großen deutschen Wissenschaftsorganisationen und den Berliner Universitäten mitgetragene Institution. Finanziert wird das Wissenschaftskolleg zu gleichen Teilen durch das Land Berlin und den Bund. Seit 1981 werden jährlich ca. 40 international renommierte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unterschiedlicher Nationalitäten und Disziplinen als Fellows eingeladen, sich auf ein selbstgewähltes Arbeitsvorhaben zu konzentrieren. Wir suchen zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt einen Forschungsassistenten (m/w/d) (Teilzeit mit 19,5 Wochenstunden) im Rahmen des Netzwerkprojektes Working Futures.

Prisons of Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany : Questioning Prison Violence

Almost twenty years after the European Court of Human Rights affirmed the right to decent conditions of detention, has this aspiration for a violence-free sentence succeeded in counteracting operation modes usually described as inherent to prison? Has the European project for common minimum standards succeeded in overcoming national penological conceptions and professional cultures, in other words overcoming the historical inertia of prison? What resistance/adaptation strategies have deployed prison administrations in response to these reform injunctions? In view of these experiences, what are the ways out of prison violence? Can civil society actors force these transformations? In particular, can lawyers help maintaining vigilance? The Seminar is held as part of the European Lawyers' Day and will bring together former detainees, researchers, civil society leaders and lawyers to discuss the issue of prison violence as is manifest in Western (Germany, France) and Eastern former soviet (Russia, Ukraine) European prison systems.

Solidarity at Work

The term “solidarity” seems to have fallen out of theoretical fashion despite the fact that it has a long history of describing the shared struggles of those oppressed by economic or political power structures. This conference aims to explore the past, present and future of “solidarity at work” on both the conceptual and empirical level. Its focus is on the world of work, which it wants to investigate from a transnational perspective. How have the concepts, conceptions and categories of solidarity shaped labor and the labor movements of different countries? What about the divergent conceptual meanings and practices in these assorted contexts? How have power relations as well as people’s everyday life been changed by the various practices related to solidarity? How do technological and managerial changes help to shift ideas and practices of solidarity? Do we see new forms emerging? Who are the agents of “solidarity at work” and what are the concrete mechanisms involved? More broadly, what are the levers and brakes of solidarity in the workplace today?

Politik der Nichtidentität

In Frankreich wie in Deutschland erfährt das Denken Adornos gegenwärtig eine erneute Rezeption. Sein Begriff der Nichtidentität, dessen Bedeutung noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft ist, steht im Zentrum des Interesses an seiner kritischen Theorie. Er kann als kritischer Begriff angesichts der Zunahme von „identitären“ Tendenzen in ganz Europa und allgemein gegenüber der inflationären Semantik von Identität im gesamten politischen Spektrum herangezogen werden. Von dieser politischen Diagnose aus geht das Junge Forum den Bedeutungen des Konzepts der Nichtidentität nach ebenso wie möglichen Verwendungen in verschiedenen interdisziplinären Zusammenhängen.

Interdisziplinäre Tagung für Nachwuchsforscher·Innen

In Frankreich wie in Deutschland erfährt das Denken Adornos gegenwärtig eine intensive Rezeption. Im Mittelpunkt der kritischen Theorie Adornos steht der Begriff der Nichtidentität oder des Nichtidentischen, dessen Bedeutung noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft ist. Er kann gerade angesichts des zunehmenden Auftretens von „identitären“ Tendenzen in ganz Europa und ganz allgemein gegenüber der inflationären Verwendung der Semantik von Identität im gesamten politischen Spektrum herangezogen werden. In der aktuellen politischen Situation kann der Gedanke der Nichtidentität dazu dienen, bestimmte Formen sozialer Regression, die unserer Zeit zu eigen sind, zu kritisieren, wie etwa der Ausschluss von Anderen im Namen der Erhaltung von Identitäten oder auch das erneute Auftreten der Figur des „autoritären Charakters“, der Ausdruck eines Bedürfnisses nach Identifikation ist und bereits in den Anfängen der Frankfurter Schule behandelt wurde.

Pratiques des sciences sociales historiques en France et en Allemagne

Les relations entre histoire et sciences sociales se sont parfois limitées en France et en Allemagne à des portraits caricaturaux, dessinés par chaque discipline pour mieux légitimer sa propre démarche. Plutôt que de s’enfermer dans des reproches parfois justifiés ou des oppositions classiques mais répétées ad nauseam (sciences nomothétiques vs. sciences idiographiques ; synchronie vs. diachronie, continuité vs. rupture, individu vs. structure etc.), nous souhaitons lors de ce Junges Forum interroger à nouveaux frais la possibilité et les conditions d’un dialogue fructueux entre sciences sociales et histoire en France et en Allemagne, à la suite d’une riche filiation faite de coopérations et de conflits.

Marx, Semiotics and Political Praxis

This special issue of Open Cultural Studies will return to the work of Karl Marx to reflect on and engage with his coherent articulation of words and their use, of words and actions, and of the intellectual and the political. The coherence of his discourse and praxis offers tools to think through, if not seek to transform, the alienated semiotic landscape of our times as described by the Frankfurt school philosopheers, Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson, Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, in this special issue we want to honour his 11th Thesis on Feuerbach: "philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."

Contemporary African and Black Diasporic Spaces in Europe

This special issue of Open Cultural Studies explores the social and cultural spaces in which identifications with African and black diaspora(s) become articulated, (re)negotiated and established as a field of collective agency with transformative power in European societies. It will argue that African diaspora communities and cultures in Europe are constructed not only by individuals’ engagements with Africa and its global diaspora, or mediatized and commercialized notions of Africanness/blackness, but also through collective agency aiming at promoting change in European societies shadowed by the normative whiteness, nationalist discourses and policies, human rights violations and overt racism.

Geomedia and the City

Geomedia is an emerging concept that has been deployed to capture a particular technological condition, associated with recent rapid developments in digital technology. As such, it signals to the dialectics of locative media and the mediations of localities. However, the concept of geomedia carries deeper/wider ontological and epistemological registers that transcend the simple twining of geography and media. In this wider sense, geomedia gestures to the expanding interdisciplinary terrain at the crossroads of media studies and geography, where various ontologies and epistemologies of space/time, flows/mobilities and mediation/ mediatization come together. The aim of this special issue is to explore the urban as a key terrain where these ontologies and epistemologies are articulated.

Mais elle ouvre dans le même temps une phase d’incertitudes et d’inquiétudes légitimes sur son avenir professionnel à court, moyen et long terme. Quel que soit le système universitaire dans lequel on a fait sa thèse, les jeunes chercheurs.es partagent de part et d’autre du Rhin un certain nombre de questions, de doutes et d’angoisses, qui portent tant sur les aspects institutionnels que sur les choix très concrets à faire : doit-on privilégier la carte de l’internationalisation de son parcours ? Comment arriver à construire un nouveau sujet de recherche ? Quelles sont les possibilités structurelles qui s’offrent en France, en Allemagne ou ailleurs ?

The conference is dedicated to discussing major issues in language and aging research. The focus is on projects and research questions taking their point of departure in empirical approaches and the use of innovative methods to gather and analyze authentic material and samples of language data from older adults. Also, the subject of language in later life is deeply embedded in interdisciplinary contexts.
