The aim of the POMEDOR project (People, Pottery and Food in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean) was to explore this new field in a multidisciplinary way and to stimulate further research.

The organization of this seminar marks the beginning of the third and last phase of the SAW project. Our aim is to explore various facets of 19th and 20th century historical research about ancient mathematical sciences, especially those attested to by sources written in Chinese, the languages of the Indian subcontinent and cuneiform script.

La publication en 1865 de la traduction complète de la Bible en arabe à Beyrouth, accompagnée de sa large diffusion, sous l’égide des missionnaires de l’American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) avec le concours de savants du Liban, reste une étape charnière de l’histoire religieuse et intellectuelle du Proche Orient. Les conséquences de cette traduction dépassent outre, en effet, le champ du religieux et du théologique pour atteindre l’Homme et son rôle dans la société : le politique au sens large. Que cette traduction ait été menée à bonne fin peut alors être perçu comme le signe d’une société en évolution,d’autant plus que des musulmans ont été appelés à y collaborer aux côtés de chrétiens.

Pour la neuvième année consécutive, les rencontres internationales des doctorants du monde byzantin seront organisées à Paris les 7 et 8 octobre 2016. Elles ont pour objectif de rassembler les doctorants de toutes disciplines en rapport avec la civilisation byzantine afin de leur permettre d'exposer leurs recherches et de renforcer les liens entre les jeunes chercheurs. Cinq années après le déclanchement des révolutions arabes, alors que de profonds boulversements traversent le Moyen-Orient, le Collège des Bernardins et l'iReMMO souhaitent faire le point sur la situation actuelle dans le monde arabe. Au cours de ce colloque, il s'agira d'évaluer les perspectives qui s'offrent au monde arabe. Jusqu'où ira la déliquescence prolongée de certains États arabes ? Allons nous vers une recomposition à moyen terme du Moyen-Orient fondée sur des entités ethnico culturelles à la place des États actuels ? Dans quelle mesure des concepts de citoyenneté et de démocratie peuvent-ils progresser ?

Revealing Ordinary Jerusalem (1840–1940)
New archives and perspectives on urban citizenship and global entanglements
The Open Jerusalem project aims to unlock and connect different archives and sources in order to investigate the ordinary entangled history of a global city through the lens of the concept of urban citizenship (citadinité). The objective is to produce historical narratives focusing on the way residents interacted with each other, inhabited and appropriated space(s). The symposium intends to be a forum for deepening discussions and opening scientific debates, based on contributions by scholars specializing in related topics, urban historians and specialists of the region. Therefore all participants are kindly requested to stay in Rethymno for the whole duration of the symposium.

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the "Arab mathematics", understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science "mathematized" of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi. The texts studied will be discussed at sessions of three hours. Emphasis on reading and commenting on sources.

The Ottoman Empire is one of the multi-ethnic, multi-confessional and transcontinental empires that, for centuries, shaped the history of Europe and the world. Despite their collapses, their effects can be felt up to the present day. The Ottoman Empire’s history is usually divided into two phases: its construction and consolidation from the 14th to the 17th century, and its decay and collapse from the 18th to the 20th century.

It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». Domestic, Regional, and International Trends in Islamism (2013-2015)
Over the last years, politics in the Middle East and North Africa have been shaped by impressive reversals of fortune. Month after month, journalists and analysts have all at some point depicted liberals, Islamists, soldiers, women, jihadis, and youth as the great winners of the "Arab spring", before being later considered as likely losers. The root causes of the Muslim Brotherhood’s inability, since the fall of Muhammad Mursi in Egypt, during the second “round” of the Arab Spring, to cash in on the political capital originally accumulated thanks to their leading role in the opposition to authoritarian regimes and subsequently during post-revolutionary elections, still calls for substantial research. In parallel, the emergence of the so-called Islamic State has been a game changer, introducing new dynamics that need to be made explicit and analysed by academics.

The paradigm of the inverted pyramid? Genesis, institutions, strategies and reception
Politique Américaine, la revue de référence en langue française consacrée à la vie politique interne et aux stratégies internationales des États-Unis, lance un appel à contribution pour son nouveau numéro thématique : « La diplomatie publique américaine au Moyen-Orient : le paradigme de la pyramide inversée ? Genèse, institutions, stratégies et réception ». La diplomatie publique est envisagée comme toute pratique diplomatique visant à agir directement ou indirectement sur les sociétés civiles et non plus sur les seuls gouvernements. Autrement dit, il s’agit de l’ensemble des efforts de « séduction » qu’un État déploie vis-à-vis des opinions publiques d’un autre État ou d’une région. L’importance récente prise par ce concept, souligne la nécessité pour les principaux acteurs de la vie internationale d’entretenir un dialogue à plusieurs niveaux avec les sociétés civiles étrangères afin d’anticiper les évolutions politiques et sociales initiées par d’autres acteurs que les États.

Elites, civil society and segmentarities in State reconstruction
La Libye est aujourd’hui un symbole de la complexité des bouleversements qui travaillent et redessinent la rive Sud-méditerranéenne depuis les printemps arabes. Elle se singularise à la fois par une très forte instabilité et surtout par un rare enchevêtrement de fractures multiples qui se croisent et s’alimentent. Mais au-delà, les incertitudes et les trajectoires bousculées de la transition en Libye expriment, en les exacerbant, les difficultés et les écueils du processus de mutations sociétales et politiques qui touchent l’ensemble des sociétés sud-méditerranéennes. Aussi, le colloque se propose de questionner le processus de transition en Libye en lien avec les grandes interrogations que soulève ce processus à l’échelle de tout le monde arabe.

Les salles à auges dans l’architecture de l’Antiquité tardive, entre Afrique et Proche-Orient
Monuments pour les distributions publiques ou écuries ?
Parmi les bâtiments abritant des auges en pierre taillée qui parsèment les sites archéologiques de Tunisie et d’Algérie, un groupe se distingue : construits en grand appareil très soigné, ces édifices abritent des rangées d’auges et sont appelés « monuments » ou « salles à auges » par les archéologues. Manifestement édifiés à l’époque tardo-antique (IVe-VIIe siècle), leur fonction reste énigmatique : après avoir été interprétés comme des églises transformées en écurie, ou l’inverse, prime aujourd’hui l’idée qu’ils aient abrité des activités à vocation économique, liées à l’échange de denrées ou d’objets (distributions, collectes, dépôts...). L’objectif de cette rencontre est de confronter les études réalisées sur divers édifices à auges à travers le monde méditerranéen pour comparer leurs caractéristiques architecturales et dégager de possibles similitudes et, en considérant leur environnement archéologique, d’identifier les activités spécifiques qui leur seraient liées.

Première journée Ménestrel - ressources en ligne pour la recherche
Créé en 1997, le portail Ménestrel vise à présenter de façon critique l’ensemble des ressources en ligne utiles pour les études médiévales, envisagées pour l’ensemble des régions de l’Ancien Monde, de l’Écosse au Japon, et dans toute la palette des sciences humaines abordant la période médiévale, de l’archéologie à la littérature ou la philosophie, en passant par la papyrologie ou l’histoire de l’alimentation, pour ne citer que quelques-uns des champs couverts. Depuis plusieurs années existe un ensemble de rubriques relatives à l’islam médiéval, proposées et mises à jour par un réseau international de chercheurs spécialistes du monde islamique. Cette journée, qui rassemblera pour la première fois ces divers contributeurs, sera aussi l’occasion de présenter l’actualité des ressources en ligne, et de discuter plus largement sur la place du numérique dans les pratiques contemporaines de formation et de recherche sur l’islam médiéval.
