The Summer 2017 session will take place in Weimar, Germany, from June 10-17, 2017 and is entitled “Challenges of Media Anthropology”.

Mittelalterliche Bildgeometrie

Mittelalterliche Bildräume, so meint man zu wissen, sind nicht nach den Regeln der Perspektive konstruiert und gelten daher oft als a-perspektivisch. In Wirklichkeit liegt jedoch auch dem „mittelalterlichen“ Bild eine bestimmte Geometrie zugrunde, in deren bewegter Geschichte dennoch gewisse einheitlich grundlegende Strukturen erkennbar sind. Diese verschwinden Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts definitiv aus der Konstruktion von Bildräumlichkeit. Das Kolloquium soll den Blick auf die Grundlagen und die Geschichte dieser Bildgeometrie wieder öffnen und damit der nur retrospektiv negativen Beschreibung mittelalterlicher Bildräumlichkeit als gewollt oder ungewollt a-perspektivisch, rudimentär oder naiv eine konkret positive Beschreibung entgegensetzen. Die mittelalterliche Bildgeometrie in ihren höchst vielfältigen Varianten ist nicht defizitär, sondern hochgradig effizient und kann wesentlich präziser rekonstruiert werden, als bisher geschehen ist.

Romain Rolland et l’Allemagne pendant la Grande Guerre : connexions, perception, réception

« Comment être plus négligé que ne l’est aujourd’hui Romain Rolland (1866-1944) ? », s’interrogeait Florent Georgesco dans une chronique publiée dans Le Monde des livres à l’occasion de la sortie du Journal de Vézelay. Ce constat, formulé en décembre 2012, est aujourd’hui en grande partie dépassé. Portée par le formidable engouement médiatique et scientifique suscité par le centenaire de la Grande Guerre, l’œuvre de Rolland est sortie du purgatoire dans lequel l’histoire l’avait enfermée.

The conference “Order into Action” asks if political, geographical or religious large-scale concepts constituted the basic elements of systems of world order and how those concepts were translated into concrete actions or practices. In order to include a comparative view on regions and cultures, the confereince combines the perspectives of scholars in European, Arabic and Islamic and Asian Studies, as well as outlooks on premodern societies in (sub-saharan) Africa, the Americas and Australia.

Rereading Aristotle, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and Demetrius through the lens of contemporary narratology provides scholarship with a potentially fruitful perspective for investigating the relationship between historical narrative and other forms of literature. In particular, the reflections of Dionysius and Demetrius on narrative style at the micro-level, as well as those of Aristotle on history and tragedy as ways of representing knowledge at the macro-level, might enable historians and comparatists to focus on the question of how pan-European historical narratives are related to the drama of their times.

Arbeit und Familie in der ständischen Gesellschaft

Interdisziplinäre Perspektiven im interkulturellen Dialog

Der Workshop zielt darauf ab, deutschen und französischen NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen der Geschichtswissenschaft und der Rechtsgeschichte ein Forum zu bieten, in dem sie ihre Forschungen zu den Zusammenhängen, wechselseitigen Einflüssen und gegenläufigen Tendenzen zwischen Arbeit und Familie vom Hochmittelalter bis zum Ende der Frühen Neuzeit (ca. 1100-1815) vorstellen und im interdisziplinären Dialog diskutieren können. Die drei Schwerpunkte der Normaushandlung, der Ungleichheit und des Einflusses kulturellen, politischen und sozioökonomischen Wandels ermöglichen eine Untersuchung der Beziehungen zwischen Arbeit und Familie aus der innovativen Perspektive sozialer und kultureller Diversität.

Reading History in Antiquity

Audience-Oriented Perspectives on Classical Historiography

The 21^st century could justifiably be deemed an era highly fertile for the examination of ancient readership of classical historiography. This is because the last decades have contributed to the liberation of modern scholarship from the nineteenth-century positivism’s persistence in scrutinizing the “objectivity” of ancient historians and seeing them mostly as the celebrated exemplars of critical acumen and scientific conscientiousness. On the contrary, if we try to summarize the prevailing modern perspectives on classical historiography, we may refer to the analysis of the ancient historians’ view of the nature of the historical development, their goals in preserving the past by writing history, the literary qualities of ancient historical accounts, and the techniques the ancient historians used in order to disseminate certain ideological and interpretive messages and to create specific emotions in their readers.

Frankreich in Deutschland seit 1871 : 150 Jahre diplomatische Präsenz

Dieser Studientag soll die Möglichkeit eröffnen, sich eineinhalb Jahrhunderte französischer diplomatischer Präsenz in Deutschland seit der Reichseinigung, vor Augen zu führen. Dabei werden nicht nur die Wirkungsstätten dieser Präsenz - in erster Linie Berlin aber auch Bonn und München - sondern auch die Akteure, sowie die Entwicklung der diplomatischen Praxis, im Zentrum des Interesses stehen. Das Hauptaugenmerk soll dabei auf dem Alltag der französischen Emissäre, der Erfahrung des Lebens auf deutschem Boden und dem interkulturellen Austausch, der die Arbeit der Diplomaten mit sich bringt, liegen. Darüber hinaus soll diese Veranstaltung ihren Beitrag zur derzeitigen Renaissance der Diplomatiegeschichte leisten. Die Tagung findet in einem öffentlichen Rahmen statt, der den Dialog zwischen Forschern und aktiven Diplomaten ermöglicht.

Chaque année, le centre offre deux bourses Wiedemann pour des projets de recherche dédiés à l’étude des Lumières européennes. Afin de permettre à des chercheurs allemands et étrangers d’effectuer un séjour à Halle, une bourse pour doctorants ainsi qu’une bourse pour chercheurs plus expérimentés sont offertes annuellement. Ces bourses sont généreusement financées par la Fondation Dr. phil. Fritz Wiedemann.

Art History for Artists: Interactions Between Scholarly Discourse and Artistic Practice in the 19th Century

The development of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18^th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19^th century.
