Die Berliner Luftbrücke

Ein Erinnerungsort des Kalten Krieges

Ob nun wirklich „die ganze Welt […] dieses Berlin“ sah, wie Reuter erklärte, ist eine der Leitfragen unserer Tagung, die, ausgehend von der „Frontstadt“ Berlin, den Blick nach Westdeutschland und in das benachbarte Ausland richten will, um zum einen die Luftbrücke als transnationalen Erinnerungsort des Kalten Krieges zu fassen, zum anderen aber auch über den Blick von außen der Frage nachzugehen, ob Berlin zur damaligen Zeit wirklich im internationalen Fokus des Ost-West-Konflikts stand, wie es in Presse und Forschung oftmals zu lesen ist.

Intersections of Art, Science, and Technology in Soviet Film and Culture

By maintaining the tension between artists’ imaginative approaches to technology in the Soviet Union (Meyerhold’s Biomechanics), film directors’ use of science such as physiology (Eisenstein’s Expressive Movement), and scientists’ own theorization of art history (Lev Vygotsky’s The Psychology of Art), this workshop aims at unpacking the historical and political forces behind Soviet film theory, film practice, and art history in relation to science and technology. While examining the juncture between art, science, and technology in post-Revolutionary Russia, with a focus on the avant-garde period until the death of Joseph Stalin, cinema is thus considered as a device beyond its medium of film (Francois Albera, Maria Tortajada: Cinema Beyond Film) and the medium-specificity of the arts is called into question.

Grafen und Klöster in der fränkischen Welt

Ostfrankenreich, Westfrankenreich und Burgund. (Ende 9. Jahrhundert – Ende 11. Jahrhundert)

Cette journée d'études proposera un état de la recherche des jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur les espaces francophones et germanophones autour de la question des relations entre comtes et abbayes dans le monde franc durant la période post-carolingienne (de la fin du IX^e siècle à la fin du XI^e siècle). Durant cette période de changements politiques, la manière dont les comtes ont créé et/ou dominé des abbayes (abbatiat laïque, avouerie) et dont les moines ont représenté ces comtes (rouleaux des morts, livres de mémoire, documentation diplomatique) ont fortement évolué, suscitant des conflits, très souvent soulignés par l'historiographie, mais aussi des collaborations importantes, mises en valeur par la recherche récente. Les approches historiographiques diffèrent par ailleurs des deux côtés du Rhin et cette journée attachera une importance particulière à la comparaison des travaux francophones et germanophones.

Form und Leben. Morphologie als Paradigma zwischen Philosophie und Wissenschaft

Tagung des DFG-Netzwerks “Morphologie als Paradigma” in Zusammenarbeit mit dem ZfL Berlin

Die Tagung eröffnet die Forschung zum Begriff der Morphologie im Rahmen des DFG-Netzwerks »Morphologie als Paradigma«. Im Horizont der namensgebenden These werden hier zur ersten Orientierung kultur- und naturphilosophische sowie poetologische und lebenswissenschaftliche Verwendungen von morphologischen Modellen ins Gespräch gebracht. Dabei soll zum einen der Modellfunktion der Morphologie bei Ernst Cassirer, zum anderen der Frage nach Parallelen bis in die moderne funktionsbiologische Disziplin Raum gegeben werden. Letztlich steht damit in kritischer Auseinandersetzung auch zur Debatte, ob hier möglicherweise ein Ansatzpunkt zur Redefinition der Aufgaben und Methoden der Kulturphilosophie liegt.

Eine Erkundung zu Partizipationsmöglichkeiten und epistemischen Praktiken außerhalb des Hochschulstandards

Was kann eigentlich als “soziologisch” bezeichnet werden? Mit dieser Frage wollen wir versuchen eine Vielzahl an Problemen zu adressieren, die sich aus den Erfahrungen ergeben, bei der die Soziologie als wissenschaliche Disziplin Grenzen des Soziologisierens vorgibt. Dabei verstehen wir unter “soziologisieren” gerade nicht nur die Art und Weise, wie soziologisches Wissen in Form von empirischen Daten oder abstrakten Theorien generiert, sondern auch, wie diese angewandt, organisiert, darüber diskutiert und darauf Bezug genommen wird.

Accidents and the role of the State in the 20th century

Les journées d'étude « Les accidents et l'État au XX^e siècle » ont pour objet d'engager une réflexion, dans une perspective historique, sur l'histoire de l'évolution des relations entre le risque accident et l'État moderne au XXe siècle Les journées d'étude sont organisées dans le cadre d'un projet de recherche joint USIAS (Strasbourg)-FRIAS (Freiburg) qui porte sur une histoire croisée franco-allemande des accidents dans le cadre militaire au XX^e siècle. Les terrains explorés pourront porter de manière privilégiée sur le domaine militaire, mais ils pourront aussi inclure des terrains et des études de cas relevant de l'histoire du travail, des techniques, de l'environnement, de la santé et de l'histoire politique de l'État.

Art history for artists: interactions between scholarly discourse and artistic practice in the 19th century

The conference seeks to examine the shaping of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century in relation to artistic training and exchanges between artists and scholars. The development of art history has been associated with an array of socio-political and economic factors such as the formation of a bourgeois public, the politics of national identity and state legitimacy or the needs of an expanding art market. This conference aspires to explore yet another, less studied dimension: the extent to which the historical study of art was also rooted in an intention to inform contemporary artistic production.

Occupied Societies in Western Europe: Conflict and Encounter in the 20th Century

The history of Western Europe in the first half of the 20th Century was shaped by numerous contradictions: by conflicts and interdependencies, proximity and distance, violence and co-operation. Many of these elements can be identified in the structures and dynamics of Western European societies under German occupation. After all, the relationship between occupiers and the occupied cannot simply be reduced to "collaboration" and "resistance", in contrast to the suggestions of an older historiography.

In the centre of this interdisciplinary workshop are above all the processes of communalization of imagined communities. How different these processes are can be presented through different examples for imagined communities. Nations (Anderson) aim to unite a homogeneous group with the same language, religion or culture. International organisations as well as transnational movements or networks share ideals, but also strive for concrete political and social goals. These processes may also be seen in the Nazi Volksgemeinschaftenwhich demanded the subordination of the individual for the benefit of the collective body, and thereby promised the fulfilment of individual happiness.

All the Beauty of the World. The European Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)

In the wake of the Western expansion, a fast growing number of non-European artefacts entered the European market. They initially made their way into princely cabinets of curiosities. Enabled by the forced opening and exploitation of more and more parts of the world and pushed by social and technological changes of the time, the 18^th century brought a boom of the market of non-European artefacts in Europe. This came along with the emergence of a broader collecting culture and the development of a rich museumscape. This market and its development in terms of methods and places of exchange and monetary and ideological value of the objects are in the focus of an international symposium that will take place in October 2016 in Berlin.

L’Empire ottoman fait partie des empires multi-ethniques, multiconfessionnels et transcontinentaux qui, pendant des siècles, ont façonné l’histoire de l’Europe et du monde. Les traces qu’il a laissées dans l’histoire de l’Europe sont encore visibles de nos jours. L’histoire de l’Empire ottoman est traditionnellement divisée en deux phases : celle de sa consolidation et de sa structuration du XIV^e au XVII^e siècle et celle de sa décadence et sa dissolution du XVIII^e au XX^e siècle.
