Stages of Utopia and Dissent, 50 years on...
15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Transnational Networks and the British Empire (Ca. 18-20th centuries)
This workshop intends to bring together research scholars of history and affiliated fields working on transnational networks fostered through the British Empire. We wish to focus on how certain forms of the “empire”, the “colony”, and the “outside” mutually constituted each other. Such an approach, we believe, could illumine the dense transnational convergences that shape the political, the economic, the social, and the cultural in various locations simultaneously.

La généalogie est un puissant idiome de hiérarchisation sociale dans l'Europe d'Ancien Régime et garde son efficace bien au delà des transformations sociales portées par l'âge des Lumières. On s'interrogera dès lors sur les transformations qu'a subies, dans l’espace temporel qui va de Fénelon à Kant, cette forme particulière de connaissance qu’est la raison généalogique, ainsi que les usages qu’en faisaient les différents acteurs sociaux.

Creating the Europe 1600-1815 Galleries
This conference celebrates the opening of the V&A’s new Europe 1600-1815 Galleries. It will introduce some of the new patterns of living that laid the foundations for our modern world. The papers will be presented according to the three main themes that create a narrative structure for the displays and interpretation in the galleries: first, that, for the first time ever, Europeans systematically explored, exploited, and collected resources from Africa, Asia and the Americas in their art and design; second, that France took over from Italy as leader of fashion and art in the second half of the 17th century; and third, that ways of living came to resemble those we know today.

Gender, Women and the Conservative Party, 1880s to the Present
This two-day international conference explores the relationship between women and conservatism since the late 19th century. In the media frenzy and the re-enactment of the visceral political divisions of the 1980s that greeted the death of Margaret Thatcher in April, 2013, it soon became clear that Britain’s first woman Prime Minister was being portrayed as an aberrant figure who had emerged from a party of men. It appeared that the media and the public had not been well enough served by academics in making sense of and contextualizing the Thatcher phenomenon and, more broadly, the paradoxical sexual politics of the Right.

Visiting Professorships at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 2013-2015 The deadline for all professorship applications is January 15, 2013. Two professorships are available at the Courtauld Institute to present the best recent scholarship on historical American art. A twelve-week professorship requires administering one full-term course integrated with the institute’s curriculum and participating in other scholarly activities. A one-week intensive professorship entails a public scholarly event, a seminar, and a special visit to a London gallery, archive, collection, or library relevant to American art history. This two-year postdoctoral fellowship supports advanced inquiry in the history of American art, conservation, and museum studies and is integrated with the postdoctoral fellowship program of the Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum. The selected fellow teaches three historical American art courses, participates in scholarly activities organized by the institute, and organizes an international scholarly event. Plantations au cœur du monde sauvage ?
Les ordres monastiques réformés en Europe du Nord, 1100-1600
En 1113, David, le plus jeune fils de sainte Marguerite d’Écosse, établit à Selkirk dans le Sud de l’Ecosse une colonie provenant de l’abbaye de Thiron-Gardais fondée par saint Bernard de Ponthieu. Ce fut le premier établissement d’un ordre de type bénédictin réformé fondé dans les îles Britanniques. L’arrivée de ces moines continentaux marqua le début d’une ère de profonds changements religieux, politiques, culturels, sociaux et économiques dans les pays situés à la bordure septentrionale du monde christianisé, depuis l’Écosse et l’Irlande à l’ouest à travers l’Angleterre, la Scandinavie et l’Allemagne du Nord jusqu’en Pologne et l'Estonie à l’Est. Afin de célébrer le 900e anniversaire de cet événement, l’université de Stirling accueillera une conférence pluri-disciplinaire (du 10 au 12 juillet 2013) afin d’explorer l’impact monastique sur la culture et la société de l’Europe septentrionale du XIIe au XVIe siècle ainsi que son héritage moderne. -

L'axe de recherche « Nation et mondialisation » a notamment privilégié un programme pluridisciplinaire relatif à l’analyse des élites. D’un point de vue politologique, il concerne l’analyse comparative des représentants politiques au sein des démocraties européennes et d’autre part celle de la symbolique, appréhendée notamment du point de vue des rituels politiques. Dans une perspective davantage sociologique, il ambitionne de favoriser le développement d’études comparatives autour de la question de la distinction élitiste, y compris avec le concours d’historiens ou d’anthropologues susceptibles d’introduire, pertinemment, des dimensions temporelles et culturelles. -

Les conséquences du droit de vote des femmes en Grande-Bretagne
Que s'est-il produit une fois le droit de vote obtenu ?
Ce colloque ambitionne d'apporter de nouveaux éclairages en histoire du genre et en histoire politique en s'intéressant à la période consécutive à l'obtention du droit de vote par les femmes britanniques. Il s'agira de considérer comment les héritages contestés des mouvements pour le droite de vote des femmes et pour le suffrage universel ont influé sur les débats dans l'entre-deux-guerres sur les questions de représentation politique, de réforme démocratique, de division sexuelle du travail en politique et d'inclusion très graduelle des femmes dans l'arène politique nationale en Grande-Bretagne. -

Begetters of Revolution? Shelburne and the Bowood Circle Reappraised
A Symposium in memory of Derek Jarrett at Sherborne School
William Shelburne, premier marquis de Lansdowne (1737-1805), est un personnage à part dans l’histoire politique britannique : homme d’Etat, mais aussi penseur et protecteur de penseurs et de philosophes. Ce symposium qui rassemblera des intervenants français et britanniques s’attachera à retracer sa carrière politique au gouvernement ou dans l’opposition ainsi que son attitude vis-à-vis de la Révolution française. Les points suivants seront abordés : ses relations avec la France et Genève (Etienne Dumont, en particulier), son rôle lors des négociations du Traité de Paris en 1783, ses liens avec le milieu non-conformiste en Grande-Bretagne ainsi qu’avec le philosophe Jeremy Bentham. Ce symposium s’inscrit dans une réflexion plus générale sur l’histoire comparée de la France et de la Grande-Bretagne, à travers un hommage à l’historien Derek Jarrett. La rencontre prévoit également des visites du château et des jardins de Bowood. -
