  The Cultures of Popular Culture

  Biennial conference of the Royal Irish Academy Committee for Modern Languages, Literary and Cultural Studies

  Just as the term Popular Culture describes the widest range of practices, Popular Culture Studies cover the most heterogeneous objects. While this very diversity makes it exciting as a research field, it presents a challenge in terms of methods and approaches. To promote scientific exchanges at international level, Popular Culture Studies need elements of comparability and theorization. The biennial conference of the Royal Irish Academy, hosted by the School of Modern Languages at Queen’s University Belfast, intends to offer a forum for discussion between academics, teaching and researching in the fields of Popular Cultures. It will consider the benefits of studying Popular Cultures in Modern Languages Studies and seek to map current areas of research. It presents a distinctive opportunity to discuss corpora and contrast approaches.

  Autour de la notion d'art impérial

  Le thème du prochain congrès international de médiévistique de Leeds, en 2014, a pour thème « Empire ». Le projet Art-Hist aimerait à cette occasion explorer le thème de l'art impérial à travers le titre suivant : “Images et formes impériales: approches historiques et historiographiques » afin de tenter de répondre à quelques questions : a-t-il existé un « art impérial » aux époques carolingiennes et ottoniennes ? Commet peut-il être défini ? Dans l'art médiéval, comment est suggérée ou évoquée l'idée d'empire ? Comment fonctionne dans l'oeuvre d'art ce principe d'évocation ? Comment les empereurs ont-ils utilisé ces formes et ces images pour la construction de leur pouvoir et de leur histoire ?

  Visions of Enchantment

  Occultism, Spirituality & Visual Culture

  This two-day event is a collaboration between the Department of History of Art, University of Cambridge and the Arts University Bournemouth and is organised in association with the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism. The conference seeks to investigate the formative role that occultism and magic have played in Western and non-Western visual and material culture. It aims to present original research in this feld as well as to establish a productive dialogue between academics with a particular research interest in occultism and visual culture. We invite proposals from a variety of disciplines and perspectives, provided that they present innovative insights into visual, symbolic or material aspects of the esoteric tradition.

  Following successful meetings in 2010 and 2012, Royal Museums Greenwich and the Royal Institute of Navigation are planning a third symposium to bring together current research in the history of navigation. 2014 sees the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. While this conflict provided a powerful stimulus for research and development in navigation, technological developments have also sprung from users and from commercial imperatives.

  This conference seeks to bring together scholars working on topics related to the role played by the six Non-Naturals in health maintenance in the late-medieval and early modern period. It is well-known that health was thought to depend on the regulation of the six key factors affecting body functions: the air one breathes, sleep, food and drink, evacuations, movement and emotions. In pre-modern medicine careful management of these spheres of life was regarded as crucial if one wished to prevent disease.

  Ambiance and Atmospheres: Encountering New Material Frontiers

  RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2013

  Recent work on affect in Anglophone human geography has opened up new material frontiers by theorizing affective atmospheres (Anderson 2009; Bissell 2010; McCormack 2008). In such work we see an adjustment of thinking towards and around the relations between bodies and their environment by considering the ways in which bodies are situated within diffuse, distributed, sensible, and potentially turbulent volumes. Such an emphasis on the atmospheric, taken in both its meteorological and felt/affective sense, is in many ways tied to an expanded conception of materiality that draws attention to “the vibrant, constitutive, aleatory, and even immaterial indices” of materiality and materialization (Coole and Frost 2010: 14; Bennett 2010).

  Ambiance and Atmosphere in Translation

  After "Ambience and Urban Practices", and "Ambience and Criticism", this third meeting of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche funded project "Enigmas of contemporary urban mobility”, organized within the framework of the International Ambiances Network, will develop a conversation between ambiance, atmosphere and translation. But how to translate? If translation is understood as a practice of "linguistic hospitality", as an experience of transition and mediation, what form might translation take? How might, in other words, the transition occur between the "daily" word and the word of the "expert", between that of the "living" and that of the "foreign"? How to make shareable experiences beyond the singularity expressed in different languages and cultures? What media or combination of media could help us achieve this?

  The Seventh Century: Continuity or Discontinuity?

  The 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium

  We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium, 28-29 May 2013. The colloquium is a two-day interdisciplinary conference for postgraduate students and early career researchers. The colloquium brings together scholars from different disciplines studying the seventh century in order to promote discussion and the cross-fertilisation of ideas. We will explore how wider perspectives can be used to formulate new approaches to source material, drawing out fresh perspectives on both the familiar and unfamiliar. Our general theme will be an examination of whether the seventh century can be studied as a unit across regions or whether the period represents a break in the longue durée. What was the level of discontinuity between the "long sixth" and "long eighth" centuries?

  Accidents and Emergencies

  Risk, Welfare and Safety in Europe and North America, c. 1750-2000

  The aim of this conference is to take stock of the present by focusing on modern Europe and North America from roughly 1750 onwards. It welcomes historians from all sub-fields (social, medical, cultural, etc.), scholars from other disciplines such as sociology and cultural studies. Risk, welfare and safety have long been sites of historical inquiry. This conference takes this literature as its point of departure, and encourages both general and trans-national appraisals of the history and nature of modern "risk societies", as well as accounts which focus on particular technologies, practices and discourses. In sum, the aim of "Accidents and Emergencies" is to: rethink the history of risk, welfare and safety; encourage a more integrated approach to their empirical study and conceptualisation; open up new historical and sociological perspectives through which we might better grasp the present.

  Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. The climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards.

  Plantations au cœur du monde sauvage ?

  Les ordres monastiques réformés en Europe du Nord, 1100-1600

  En 1113, David, le plus jeune fils de sainte Marguerite d’Écosse, établit à Selkirk dans le Sud de l’Ecosse une colonie provenant de l’abbaye de Thiron-Gardais fondée par saint Bernard de Ponthieu. Ce fut le premier établissement d’un ordre de type bénédictin réformé fondé dans les îles Britanniques. L’arrivée de ces moines continentaux marqua le début d’une ère de profonds changements religieux, politiques, culturels, sociaux et économiques dans les pays situés à la bordure septentrionale du monde christianisé, depuis l’Écosse et l’Irlande à l’ouest à travers l’Angleterre, la Scandinavie et l’Allemagne du Nord jusqu’en Pologne et l'Estonie à l’Est. Afin de célébrer le 900e anniversaire de cet événement, l’université de Stirling accueillera une conférence pluri-disciplinaire (du 10 au 12 juillet 2013) afin d’explorer l’impact monastique sur la culture et la société de l’Europe septentrionale du XIIe au XVIe siècle ainsi que son héritage moderne.
