Research in Medieval Studies - An International Meeting Series

The past decade has witnessed a marked increase in medieval studies. Younger scholars have, in general, benefitted from doctoral and post-doctoral funding, besides collective research programmes. This, along with the experience and know-how of established academics in countless departments around the Globe has helped to foster this renewal. Results have been ground-breaking in many topics. The Research in Medieval Studies (RiMS) is conceived of as an ongoing series of yearly meetings whose aim is to bring scholars of different academic and geographical backgrounds together to open, or otherwise continue and direct, historiographical debate on key issues in medieval studies, while helping to establish outstanding research that is both innovative and comparative.

Méthodologies comparées

O objetivo deste workshop é comparar, por meio da análise de alguns casos específicos, os métodos científicos utilizados no estudo dos manuscritos iluminados (história da arte) e dos artefactos encontrados no âmbito da arqueologia medieval. Em ambas as áreas os contextos de criação e utilização dos objectos são fundamentais para a sua caracterização e compreensão. A partir de casos específicos tentar-se-á traçar semelhanças e diferenças nos métodos de análise que caracterizam as duas disciplinas históricas. Deste modo pretende-se compreender em que medida é possível adaptar e aplicar metodologias diversas de modo a obter um conhecimento mais profundo do objecto e do seu contexto.

PIUDHIST is an inter-university doctoral programme in which History is viewed from an inter-disciplinary point of view. Despite its unique character, History is regarded here as a field of knowledge which cannot do without a permanent cross fertilization with other areas in the humanities and the social sciences. In our vision, this is also why we consider apposite to attach, as a subtitle for this programme, the words “change and continuity in a global world”.

This conference, prepared as part of a 3-years research project on the “Overall Rural Tourism Experience” (ORTE) inthree Portuguese villages, offers an in depth discussion of the “rural tourism experience”, its manifestations, meanings, impacts and evolution. It intends to significantly contribute to current reflections on the potential and limitations of rural tourism as a development tool as well as to the identification of ways to maximize this potential in certain circumstances, through a more profound understanding of the dynamics of the “overall rural tourism experience”.

Turismo rural em tempo de neoruralidades

A 8ª edição do CITURDES tem como objetivo refletir sobre o papel do turismo em contextos de pós-ruralidades ou neo-ruralidades, segundo as perspetivas teóricas adotadas. Nestes novos contextos, os turistas encontram-se não apenas com os velhos residentes rurais, mas também com novos habitantes neorurais, recém-chegados, retornados ou outros que se deslocam ao rural na procura do que imaginam ser uma melhor qualidade de vida. Esta translocalidade, que questiona a falsa e simplista dicotomia rural/urbano, é especialmente relevante quando falamos de turismo rural e desenvolvimento sustentável, pois observa-se uma mistura complexa de agentes sociais que estão a reconstruir e resinificar os tradicionalmente chamados espaços rurais.
