Festival jeunes chercheurs dans la cité
Édition bruxelloise 2021
Le festival interuniversitaire et transfrontalier Jeunes Chercheurs dans la Cité est une initiative franco-belge ayant pour but de valoriser les travaux des jeunes chercheur·e·s en sciences humaines et sociales. Depuis sa création en 2008, et en collaboration avec l’université de Lille, ce festival se donne comme objectif de sortir du cadre universitaire et d’offrir un espace de dialogue, en proposant plusieurs cycles de conférences destinées au grand public. Cette année, l’édition bruxelloise se déroulera les après-midis des 20 et 27 février 2021, en ligne. Les échanges se concentreront avant tout sur l’époque contemporaine et exploreront diverses thématiques en interrogeant, notamment, l’histoire de la Maison de mode Chloé, l’éducation des jeunes aux relations affectives et sexuelles, ou encore le discours de Theresa May dans une société où s’affrontent cosmopolitisme et populisme.

Bearing Witness to Traumatic Experiences: Cultural Productions of Uyghurs in Exile
PhD position in Asian Studies
This Ph.D. position is funded by a MIS (Mandat d’Impulsion Scientifique/ Incentive Grant for Scientific Research) project: “Bearing Witness to Traumatic Experiences: Cultural Productions of Uyghurs in Exile”. Uyghurs are a Turkic-speaking people based at the border of Central Asia and the north-western part of China. Massive internments and arrests of hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs have taken place in the region since 2016, including the Uyghur elite. In these conditions, centers of the cultural production of the Uyghurs have shifted from their native land to the diaspora spread across the world. This project looks at Uyghur diasporic cultural production that aims at drawing the world’s attention and bearing witness to the various abuses perpetrated at home by the Chinese government. The whole project analyses selected poems, short films, video clips, and dance and music performances to tackle new transmedial forms of testimonies in the Uyghur case.

Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology
Domestic accumulation, decluttering, and the stuff of kinship in anthropological perspective
We invite submissions of abstracts considering the following sorts of questions: What is the relationship between storage and the labor of kinship? What kinds of possessions are sources of obligation? Which are experienced as social or animate beings? What social practices and spatial processes surround waste, excess, and the riddance of objects from the home? How might local ethnographic concepts like hau orbrol inform the anthropological understanding of attachment to possessions, recycling, or the circulation of second-hand objects? When is accumulation a valued social practice, and when is it morally suspect? How is the space of storage constructed in relationship to the social space of the home, and how might this reflect on the local category of stored things? We invite authors to consider how practices such as storage, stockpiling, and purging of belongings can be approached anthropologically in order to provide both nuanced ethnographic depth and broader cross-cultural and historical perspective. Interdisciplinary perspectives are also welcome.

Intersectional Challenges in Afroeuropean Communities
8th Biennial Afroeuropeans Network Conference
The conference aims to consider how Afroeuropean communities are shaped by the intersections of ‘race’ and ethnicity with other markers of identification such as gender, class, sexuality, ability, age, citizenship status, language… Informed by intersectional thinking and its rejection of unidimensional perspectives in activism, policy and research, the conference explores how diverse processes of privileging and discrimination interact, making for complex and dynamic experiences of what it means to be Afroeuropean. It acknowledges that the racial and ethnic alterity of Afroeuropeans intersects with other identities (e.g. male, female, queer, working class, religious, disabled, aged…) and specifically seeks to examine to what extent these intersections create new alignments and opportunities.

Utopias and collective dystopias in rural worlds: Contestation, experimentation, evasion
"Civilisations", volume 70
The investment in the rural world by anti-establishment communities is not new. The strategy of withdrawal and distancing from places where power is centralised has already been observed by sociologists, anthropologists and historians at different times and places around the world. People who decide to organise their daily lives and modes of production collectively are motivated by different aspirations. Utopian collectives are also defended by their protagonists as places for experimentation with societal alternatives, whether they concern modes of governance, agricultural techniques, gender relations or the organisation of work. The objective of this issue is to grasp their "creative" potential, as well as the social values and contradictions they promote. This issue is part of a multidisciplinary approach.

Des soutiens-gorges jetés par les féministes américaines dans les « poubelles de la liberté » à la nudité des Femen, du polo Fred Perry des suprémacistes américains aux tee-shirts no logo des altermondialistes, du béret du Che au keffieh d’Arafat, le vêtement, et parfois son absence, nourrit le spectre des résistances, alimente la scénographie des contestations, leur confère une visibilité quitte à jouer, comme les Black Blocs, sur l’anonymat protecteur. Ce projet comprendra trois axes : le rôle du vêtement dans la construction des antagonismes, sa place dans les processus de mobilisation et son étude en tant que vecteur de circulation interculturelle des modalités de la résistance.

Thought and act. The theoretical stakes and practices of rethinking of the architectural act
Ce colloque vise à explorer comment le domaine de l’architecture est touché par un mouvement de revalorisation du faire. Cette tendance se manifeste par le fait que certains architectes s’engagent de manière plus directe dans les pratiques constructives, en prise avec certains matériaux ou certaines techniques. Le colloque propose d’investiguer la diversité des manifestations de la revalorisation du faire en architecture suivant trois axes distincts : les évolutions historiques et enjeux théoriques de ce phénomène ; les acteurs impliqués, les motivations et les valeurs qui les poussent à s’y engager ; et les moyens ou outils qui sont mobilisés en vue d’établir une relation plus directe avec la matière et sa mise en œuvre.

New obstacles to migration, new tactics among migrants
This conference will explore the transformation in the access to territory, mobility and rights. We will explore how the public image of refugees is transformed by xenophobic discourse and the everyday management of asylum rights, including the role of the private sector and the subsequent mobility of refugees. We will further explore the functioning of the access to rights of EU-migrants and the everyday functioning of other migration policies, including the access to healthcare, the detention of migrants and the access to citizenship. Finally, we will explore the political and electoral mobilisations of and in solidarity to migrants and minorities, including artistic expression, developed in answer to the new obstacles to migration.

Prisons and the perspectives for reinforcing procedural law
La Cour européenne des droits de l’homme a, au fil de sa jurisprudence, élaboré un véritable statut juridique du détenu. Elle a assorti les droits ainsi reconnus de garanties procédurales diverses. Pourtant, le quotidien carcéral demeure émaillé de multiples atteintes aux droits fondamentaux ; les recours des détenus peinent à provoquer l’intervention d’un juge en temps utile. Même le recours à la procédure de l’arrêt pilote/quasi-pilote, comme ce fut le cas dans les arrêts Vasilescu et Bamouhammad rendus contre la Belgique peinent à éliminer les problèmes systémiques constatées. Dans ce contexte, quelle peut être la contribution de l’Union européenne à la réalisation des droits en détention ?

Addiction to betting: a social phenomenon?
Organisée par le CASPER avec le soutien du FNRS, du programme Move-in Louvain et du Conseil de recherche de l'Université Saint-Louis - Bruxelles, cette journée d'étude a pour vocation de proposer une approche socio-anthropologique de l’addiction aux jeux d’argent. Pour ce faire, nous commencerons par soulever la question suivante : dans quelle mesure l’addiction aux jeux d’argent peut-elle être considérée comme un phénomène social ? Outre la construction sociale du « jeu pathologique » en tant que catégorie nosographique – qu’il s’agirait selon certains de « déconstruire » –, c’est précisément la réalité sociale de ce phénomène qu’il nous faudra interroger, en embrassant notamment le point de vue des joueurs sur leurs pratiques...

Thinking - Making. Perspectives on the growing prominence of making in architecture
This conference explores the growing prominence of making in architecture, as manifested by architects who engage more directly in building practices, dealing more closely with materials and techniques. The colloquium proposes to investigate a diverse set of cases where making is re-evaluated and celebrated. It calls for papers along three lines of inquiry: historical and theoretical perspectives on the evolution of the relationship between thinking and making, and its consequences in architecture, case studies that assess the motivations and values of actors involved in making in the field of architecture, investigations into the means and tools that aim at a closer relationship between designers, materials and built forms.

En tant qu’elle participe de la consécration des auteurs et entretient des rapports intéressés avec la question de la valeur, l’histoire de la littérature a tendance à accorder beaucoup plus d’attention aux succès qu’aux échecs. Tout se passe comme si la distance temporelle qui sépare le chercheur de son objet avait figé la valeur des œuvres, constitué un panthéon immuable tout prêt à être « reconnu » et aux marges duquel il n’y aurait que des œuvres « mineures », en cela moins dignes d’être étudiées. La réussite, cependant, n’est que la pointe de l’iceberg littéraire. En se focalisant sur les « grands » écrivains, sur les « modernes », sur les « originaux », ne risque-t-on pas de donner une image sinon faussée, du moins (trop) partielle, de la littérature d’une époque ?

À l'occasion du centenaire de l'assassinat de Rosa Luxemburg (1919-2019), le Centre d’histoire et de sociologie des gauches (université libre de Bruxelles), la Maison du Livre, le Centre des archives du communisme en Belgique, l’Institut Marcel Liebman et la Formation Léon Lesoil coorganisent un colloque de réflexion critique autour de quatre thèmes majeurs qui ont marqué la pensée et l’action de Rosa Luxemburg : la « fin du capitalisme », la « démocratie radicale », l’ « auto-détermination des peuples et impérialisme » et la question de la « grève générale ».

After a first series of seminars called Home: Heaven and Hell that explored the relations of a subject to his places of origin in contemporary narratives, a next series of HOME will dwell on the reconstruction of an imagined home. What characterizes this new home that follows the wandering, exile or migration? This time under the title of Home Away From Home, a second series of seminars wishes to examine present-day literary and artistic representations of adopted spaces as to understand how these representations emerge in interaction with a subject who is confronted with a territorial quest that is coming to an end.

Hoarding and Disorder in Comparative Perspective – FNRS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Search is open for a 2 year postdoctoral position at ULB in Brussels, Belgium. The candidate will contribute to a research project with PI Sasha Newell on Hoarding and Disorder in Comparative perspective. The successful candidate will conduct independent fieldwork in Belgium in relation to the themes described below and produce their own research products from it, while coordinating their findings comparatively with those from the US and Côte d’Ivoire. The candidate may develop their own methodologies and interpretative schemas, while dialoguing with those employed in other parts of the project by the PI. They will collaborate with the PI (Sasha Newell) in presenting and/or writing up some of the material collected in a comparative frame, help to organize a conference on hoarding and disorder that brings in a broader range of regional and interdisciplinary scholarship, and help to edit a volume or special issue using the proceedings from that conference.

Le présent cycle de séminaires se donne pour projet de relire les Cahiers du GRIF, première revue féministe francophone européenne. Plusieurs objectifs motivent une telle entreprise. Tout d’abord, celui de relire les Cahiers en partant de l’hypothèse qu’au fil des numéros peuvent être perçues les traces de débats et d’échanges qui ont animé et parfois structuré le mouvement des femmes en Europe, ou dans l’espace francophone international. À travers cinq séances de séminaire, de trois heures chacune, nous nous donnons le temps d’étudier un numéro particulier, un thème ou certains enjeux matériels qui traversent l’ensemble des numéros de la revue.

Les présentations s’effectuant dans une perspective de vulgarisation, l’usage de la vidéo, de l’image et de la littérature ainsi que la proposition d’exercices pratiques sont vivement encouragés. Cet appel est ouvert à tous les doctorant·e·s ou néo docteur·e·s en Sciences Humaines et Sociales.
