Corps, marchés et télévision, 1950-1980
In the television age, health and the body have been broadcasted in many ways: in short health education films, school television, professional training materials, TV ads, documentaries, reality TV shows and news, as well as stand-alone videos distributed to specific audiences. This three-day conference proposes an exploration of how television formats have influenced and staged bodies, health and healthy practices from local, regional, national and international perspectives, and how these TV programmes spread the conviction that viewers could and should invest in their health and shape their own body.

50 years on…
15th May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Spaces of circulation and colonial/imperial landscapes: criticisms and challenges
8th European Society for the History of Science conference
By bringing together scholars who have used the problematic of circulation in their work as well as those who have reservations as to its relevance, we would like in this symposium to develop the problematic through a dialogue between these different positions in order to not only to establish a better understanding of the problematic and methodological nature of the concept of circulation, but above all of the implied conception of spaces of circulation within which knowledges, know-hows, practices and norms are constructed and shared, and beyond which they need again to be negotiated in order to move.

Sacred science: Learning from the tree
Symposium for the European Society for the History of Science's conference
“Unity and Disunity” has been chosen as the main theme for the European Society for the History of Science's conference that will take place in London on September 2018. Within this framework, Trames Arborescentes has decided to participate by proposing a commented panel that will gather four speakers around the subject “Sacred science: Learning from the tree”. This panel traces the arboreal motif through time, using it as a means to reflect on unity and disunity of interaction between science, art and the sacred.

Broadcasting health and disease
Bodies, markets and television, 1950s-1980s
The three-day conference aims to investigate how television programmes in their multiplicity approached issues like medical progress and its limits, healthy behaviour or new forms of exercise by adapting them to TV formats and programming...The conference seeks to analyse how television and its evolving formats expressed and staged bodies, health and fitness from local, regional, national and international perspectives. How spectators were invited not only to be TV consuming audiences, but how shows and TV set-ups integrated and sometimes pretended to transform the viewer into a participant of the show. TV programmes spread the conviction that subjects had the ability to shape their own body.

Music institutions and the politics of internationalism
The role of music and musicians in forging international links either between or beyond national boundaries can sometimes seem unproblematic or even emancipatory, under the assumption that music can be socially transformative. Yet just as the project of political internationalism between and after the World Wars was not without its challenges, so too did musical initiatives sometimes find themselves in positions of compromise, ethical conflict or co-option into unintended agendas.This two-day symposium will focus on music institutions and initiatives that were explicitly shaped by the project of internationalism during the politically-charged twentieth century.

Radical Americas 2017: Legacies
The fifth Radical Americas conference will take place at UCL Institute of the Americas, London on 11th and 12th September 2017. The conference falls in a year of many anniversaries, offering an opportunity to examine the legacies of various radical movements, events, writers, artists and activists. Yet the careful examination of the past should not distract us from the urgent tasks of the present, and we will consider the challenges for radicals in the Americas in the current conjuncture.

Remembering early modern revolutions
England, North America, France and Haiti
The “turn to memory”, as Geoffrey Cubitt has described it, has been a major feature of recent historiography. This one-day conference will explore the memory of the major revolutions of the early modern period (England 1649 and 1688/9; North America 1776, France 1789 and Haiti 1791-1804). By addressing these events collectively, the conference will explore the interconnectedness of these revolutions in the contemporary mind.

Cultures of Conservatism in the United States and Western Europe between the 1970's and 1990's
The conference will examine the cultural history of conservative ideas and movements in Western Europe and the United States between the 1970s and the 1990s. Focusing on cultures of conservatism, the conference will rethink the general contours of conservatism. It will pay close attention to the intersection of culture, politics and economics, in order to broaden our understanding of the processes of change that have unfolded since the 1970s.

The Allied Occupation of Germany Revisited
New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949
The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has recently seen a revival of interest among historians. This two-day international conference will showcase new research from scholars based across the globe and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies.

Radical Americas Symposium 2016
The theme of this year’s Radical Americas symposium is “Decolonizing Americas”, acknowledging the long arc of struggle for freedom since the period of European colonization of the Western Hemisphere in the 15th century. Our collaborative effort will be to consider how histories within the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean converge and depart in relation to the experience of anti-colonial and decolonizing social movements, many of which continue today. We will also consider the ways that cultural efforts, collectives, art, and intellectual projects shape radical imaginaries of freedom.

Protest in French and Francophone Arts and Culture
Society for French Studies Postgraduate Conference 2016
Protest is an intrinsic part of human culture, which enables subjects to express their dissatisfaction with existing social structures and hegemonic hierarchies of power. Protests have occurred across time periods and contexts, and have taken numerous different forms, ranging from personal expressions of discontent to united movements for revolutionary change. Protests can be individual or collective, personal or political, spontaneous or carefully planned, but they are generally orientated towards destabilising the status quo and establishing new modes of existence. Over the ages, political, social and cultural protests have successfully toppled authoritarian regimes, exposed and confronted dominant imbalances of power, and ameliorated conditions for disenfranchised members of society.

Creating the Europe 1600-1815 Galleries
This conference celebrates the opening of the V&A’s new Europe 1600-1815 Galleries. It will introduce some of the new patterns of living that laid the foundations for our modern world. The papers will be presented according to the three main themes that create a narrative structure for the displays and interpretation in the galleries: first, that, for the first time ever, Europeans systematically explored, exploited, and collected resources from Africa, Asia and the Americas in their art and design; second, that France took over from Italy as leader of fashion and art in the second half of the 17th century; and third, that ways of living came to resemble those we know today.

Les formes de manifestations varient selon les contextes et périodes, allant de l’expression du mécontentement personnel aux appels aux changements révolutionnaires. L’acte de manifester peut donc être individuel ou collectif, personnel ou politique, spontané ou organisé, mais il est presque toujours orienté vers la déstabilisation du statu quo et vise souvent à proposer de nouvelles façons d’exister. À travers l’histoire, les manifestations, qu’elles soient légales ou non, ont ainsi permis aux peuples de renverser des régimes autoritaires, exposer et confronter des déséquilibres de pouvoir, ou encore d’améliorer les conditions de vie des individus privés de droits sociaux.

New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949
The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has long constituted a classic component in academic histories of post-war Germany. After having been the subject of sustained scholarly attention in the 1970s and 1980s, the subject has subsequently faced a decline in academic interest. This two-day conference is intended to showcase new research and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies. We are inviting papers from both emerging scholars and established specialists.

Fabrications: Designing for Silk in the Eighteenth Century
Joubert de la Hiberderie’s Le Dessinateur d’étoffes d’or, d’argent, et de soie (1765) was the first book to be published on textile design in Europe. In preparation for the publication of an English translation and critical edition of the text this one day conference calls for papers that will analyse, critique, contextualise, review or otherwise engage with the Le dessinateur in the light of its themes: production, design, technology, education, botany and art. Joubert’s manual argues for both a liberal and a technological education for the ideal designer. Such a person must, he argues, have detailed knowledge of the materials, technologies and traditions of patterned silk in order successfully to propose new designs; he or she must also have taste and an eye for beauty, which call, he says, for travel in order to see both the beauties of nature and those of art gathered in the gardens and galleries of Paris and the île de France.

Radical Americas Symposium 2015
The aim of the event is to bring a range of disciplinary and geographical perspectives to bear on radicalism throughout the Americas. Our definition of radicalism is a broad one, encompassing both political radicalism as an object of study, and radical analytical approaches to the societies and cultures of the Americas. We welcome proposals that deal with any aspect of radicalism, from the democratic and republican radicalisms of the nineteenth century; to the socialist, anarchist, communist, and populist radicalisms of the twentieth century; as well as contemporary identity politics, social movements, and twenty-first century radicalisms.
