Americanisation through the arts? France – United States - exchanges and appropriations 1850-2020

Workshop 1: Bringing the arts into dialogue

    Chronicling the War, Re-imagining French-ness

Memoirs of the French external Resistance

The study of wartime and post-war life-writing is integral to the history of the French external Resistance, which we define broadly to include members of Free France and subsequent Gaullist committees, as well as those men and women living outside France who did not directly belong to Gaullist movements but still considered themselves as resisters (such as the Jean Jaures Group in London) or shifted from being supporters to challengers of de Gaulle (such as the Admiral Muselier or the journalist and writer Pierre Bourdan). Some resisters put pen to paper out of a desire to honor the memory of their deceased comrades and pass on their story to the next generation. Others, by contrast, refused to write their wartime stories, either in reaction to the commemorative practices of First World War poilus and/or the various post-war political appropriations of the Resistance.

Music and nation, 1918-1945, Europe and the Americas (II)

Music, nationalism and transnationalism - diplomacy, politics and aesthetics

Economic Life: From the Economy to the Economical?

    MANCEPT 2015

Without living beings there would be hardly no economy. The crucial question is, however, how to conceptualize the relationship between different ways of comprehending life and different ways of understanding the economy. There seems to be at least two main possibilities, which we would like to discuss and confront with each other in this workshop.

    Seminar - Sociology

Thinking the present with Max Weber

Weber study group of the British Sociological Association

The recent publication in English of Weber’s complete writings (and speeches) on universities has thrown new light on his involvement in university politics and his concern with the "type of scholar" that universities were producing: Weber imagines a university system in which researchers are becoming workers "separated from their means of production", and academics "people of the trade".  Inspired by Weber’s observations, this seminar-workshop will reflect on the current state of the university and its attendant practices: what is the meaning of scholarly work when the scholar is faced by a series of sometimes contradictory conditions and imperatives? What is the meaning of the new regime under which universities are put to work, with its "quality" indicators and debt-incurring devices, in terms of the pedagogy practised, the kinds of reason relied on, as well as the type of human being presupposed by such regime and resulting from its implementation? What kind of scholar, what kind of student, what type of human being, is produced by these practices?

    Religion and territory

Machiavelli is one of the most influential thinkers of the Western political tradition. Every single political philosopher who comes after him refers to him, either implicitly or explicitly. Every serious politician is, sooner or later, confronted with some of the practical problems Machiavelli addresses. Five hundred years after his death, Machiavelli is ubiquitous but enigmatic: often quoted, but rarely understood, his ideas frequently reduced to a few maxims from The Prince.

Public Disorder: Post-World War II European Art and Its Publics

    AAH 2009 : Intersections (April 2-4, 2009)

Following the end of WWII, artists across Europe, both east and west, sought to re-imagine the identity of the public. The internationalist utopia of the historical avant-garde had not come to pass, the populism of the national socialist model had been discredited by Fascism and Nazism, and it was yet unclear what shape the burgeoning commercial public would take in either soviet block or western nations.
