4º Encontro sobre Conservação e Reabilitação de Edifícios
ENCORE 2020

Lost and Transformed Cities: a digital perspective
The city is by definition a living entity. It translates itself into a collectiveness of individuals who share and act on a material, social and cultural setting. Its history is one of dreams, achievements and loss. As such, it also bears a history of identity. To know the history of cities is to understand our own place in the contemporaneity. The past is always seen through the eyes of the present and can only be understood as such. On the occasion of the 261st anniversary of the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, we invite scholars and experts in the fields of heritage studies, digital humanities, history, history of art and information technology to share and debate their experience and knowledge on digital heritage.

Glazed Ceramics in Architectural Heritage
Glaze Arch 2015
Glazed ceramics are used in architecture since at least the 6th century BC, as the magnificent Ishtar Gate, partially reconstructed in the Berlin Pergamon Museum, testifies. Glazed tiles decorated with intricate geometric patterns and Arabic writing were for centuries, and still are, in widespread use in the Islamic countries and for westerners remain one of the most recognizable and constant marks of the beauty of mosques. From their origin in the Middle East and flourishing in the Islamic world, glazed tiles spread to Spain and Portugal, to Italy, the Low Countries and most of Europe. Modern majolica was perfected in Italy during the 15th century and saw an early architectural integration in the works of Luca Della Robbia. A representative work is the vault of the Capilla del Cardinal del Portugallo in the church of San Miniato al Monte (Florence) where the tondi protrude from a covering of patterned glazed tiles, curiously of the same pattern as later used in façade glazed tiles manufactured in Lisbon in the 19th century.

Rehabilitation and Re-use of Modern Movement Architecture
Seminar gathering in Lisbon international experts in architecture rehabilitation and urbanism of the Modern Movement. The seminar organized by Docomomo International will take place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, on the 27th of March. At the end of the 1980s, many modern masterpieces had already been demolished or had changed beyond recognition. This seminar about Rehabilitation and Re-use of the Modern Movement Architecture aims at bringing together inspiring viewpoints about this global problem.

Images and Liturgy in Portugal in the Middle Age
The seminar Images and Liturgy in Portugal in the Middle Age, organized by the CEAACP Multidisciplinary Group Study in Arts (University of Coimbra), in partnership with the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists / Carmo Archaeological Museum, is part of the set of project initiatives of Carla Varela Fernandes’ Postdoc (Sculptures of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in collections of Portuguese museums. An imperative approach to a broader knowledge of the scientific reality). It is intended to address the medieval images as part of the liturgical rituals and the buildings they were designed for. On the other hand, we’ll try to provide advances in the knowledge on the means as an iconographic innovation or aesthetic generated at a given location "moves" and appears in other geographies, serving similar purposes.

Performing Documentation in the Conservation of Contemporary Art
Contemporary art conservation requires a re-assessment of the distinction between the work and its re-configuration in documentation. Although documentation is crucial for the survival of many contemporary works of art, it is never neutral: all approaches, formats, media and systems have their own inherent affordances and blind spots and always transform what they document. Furthermore, in process-centered, technology-based or performative artworks in particular, we often can no longer make a sharp distinction between an original work and its subsequent documentation or replication: documentation is part of the work's very core.
