  Enacting intention

  Violence. A Journal

  La revue Violence. A Journal lance un appel à contributions sur le thème du « Passage à l’acte ». Violence. A Journal recherche également des articles varia, mais entretenant toujours un lien étroit avec les problématiques relatives à la violence et à la sortie de la violence. La revue veut rassembler et faire vivre une large communauté internationale de chercheurs, de professionnels et de praticiens, autour de deux enjeux scientifiques et intellectuels complémentaires, mais distincts : l’analyse de la violence, dans ses diverses expressions et métamorphoses, et celle de la prévention et de la sortie de la violence. Violence. A Journal aura donc pour projet, tout en développant la compréhension de la violence, de faire de la sortie et de la prévention de la violence un véritable domaine de recherche, avec ses apports et ses débats. Chaque numéro s’ouvrira sur une série d’articles varia, suivi d’un dossier thématique, composé d’articles, de débats et d’entretiens. Violence. A Journal veillera également à articuler la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales à d’autres champs de la connaissance et de la réflexion. Elle tissera des liens particuliers avec les milieux artistiques et littéraires.

  "Non Graecos minus barbaros quam Romanos puto": The Greeks and Romans in their times, from the taking of Tarento to the edict of Caracalla (272 BC -212 AD)

  First part: the age of the Roman Republic

  Si la place de l’hellénisme dans le monde romain a été bien étudiée pour la période républicaine,  les rapports que les Romains entretenaient avec les Grecs de leur temps, ainsi que la manière dont ils les considéraient méritent d’être explorées plus avant. Quelles relations les Romains nouèrent-ils donc avec les Grecs avec lesquels ils étaient en contact ? Et tout d’abord, comment perçurent-ils les Grecs vivant en Grande Grèce, sur le sol même de l’Italie ? Lorsqu’ils commencèrent à remporter des victoires sur les rois hellénistiques, firent-ils une distinction entre hellénisme et peuple grec pour mieux assumer l’héritage de l’un sans s’encombrer de l’autre ? Les Romains faisaient-ils une différence entre Grecs de Grèce, d’Italie et d’Orient ? Quelles relations personnelles les aristocrates romains avaient-ils avec des Grecs ? Et quels Grecs ? Le statut social était-il le facteur prédominant dans le choix de ces relations ?

  A society of individuals? What does it mean?

  CERLIS 20th anniversary international conference

  Ce colloque international, qui se tiendra à la Sorbonne au cours de trois journées, offrira un espace de discussion à ces questions en les déclinant sur les objets au cœur des domaines de spécialisation du CERLIS : jusqu’où la famille s’est-elle individualisée ? Les enfants sont-ils des individus comme les autres ? Comment est-on « individu » dans les classes populaires ? Le récit biographique est-il une illusion ? L’individu : spect-acteur de la culture ? Que fait le numérique à une société d’individus ? Chercheur·e·s du CERLIS et chercheur·e·s invité·e·s pour la fertilité de leurs travaux sur ces questions confronteront leurs analyses, leurs enquêtes, leurs méthodes et leurs résultats. Et une session « Posters » permettra aux doctorant·e·s du CERLIS de présenter leurs recherches originales.

  Alsace and the 1918 switch - expulsions, migrations, mobilities

  Expulsions, migrations, mobilités

  Ce colloque entend reconsidérer l’histoire de l’Alsace après 1918 à partir de recherches récentes sur son histoire migratoire, qui incluent l’expulsion des Allemands et des Alsaciens germanophiles, les migrations de travail, les déplacements frontaliers, l’accueil de réfugiés dans les années 1930. Ces phénomènes migratoires divers, à différentes échelles, dépassant souvent les frontières de la région comme de la France (puisqu’ils touchèrent le pays de Bade, la Lorraine, la Ruhr, la Belgique) contribuèrent tous à redéfinir la place de l’Alsace dans la Troisième République et ses nouveaux liens à l’espace allemand.

  Rereading the Cahiers du GRIF

  Le présent cycle de séminaires se donne pour projet de relire les Cahiers du GRIF, première revue féministe francophone européenne. Plusieurs objectifs motivent une telle entreprise. Tout d’abord, celui de relire les Cahiers en partant de l’hypothèse qu’au fil des numéros peuvent être perçues les traces de débats et d’échanges qui ont animé et parfois structuré le mouvement des femmes en Europe, ou dans l’espace francophone international. À travers cinq séances de séminaire, de trois heures chacune, nous nous donnons le temps d’étudier un numéro particulier, un thème ou certains enjeux matériels qui traversent l’ensemble des numéros de la revue.

  The reality of fiction II

  Or the relations between fiction, narration, discourse and story

  En mai 2018, nous avons eu le plaisir de nous retrouver au Cnam pour une journée d’études, riche et dense, qui nous avait permis d’explorer les liens entre fiction et réalité. Ces liens étaient structurés autour de plusieurs nœuds. Le premier permettait de réfléchir à la fiction au regard d’autres énoncés supposés non fictionnels. Le deuxième a consisté à se demander à quoi pouvait servir ce recours à la fiction, quelles sont les fonctions de cette dernière. Enfin, une troisième direction nous a amenés à considérer l’apport de la fiction à l’activité de recherche. L’ensemble des communications de la journée sera rassemblé dans un recueil à paraître en 2019.

  Mind and Body Across Time and Discipline

  The two central ways of conceptualizing psyche–soma relations in the western tradition were, and still are, the Platonic and the Aristotelian paradigms. According to Plato, a human being is a combination of two distinct substances, a mortal body and an immortal soul. According to Aristotle, a human being is a unified substance: the soul (psuche) is the form of the body, and to describe the soul is to describe the characteristic powers of human beings, just as describing the soul of a pine tree is to describe the characteristic powers of pine trees. Human beings are seen on a continuous scale with all other beings, and to say they have a rational soul roughly means that they have a linguistic capacity that other beings lack.

  The Max Planck Research Group III investigates the emergence and development of the system of post-Tridentine global governance of the Catholic Church in depth from an interdisciplinary perspective over an extended period of time. It will do so by analysing the activity of the Congregations of the Council, the dicastery responsible for appropriately implementing the Council decisions in the entire Catholic world.  We are now looking to recruit as soon as possible (but no later than 1 April 2019) two doctoral students who will develop a doctoral thesis preferably focused on the history of the Congregation of the Council in the early modern period (XVI-XVIII century).

  Conference at Hadrian's Villa

  To mark the five hundredth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the “Istituto Autonomo Villa Adriana e Villa d’Este - Villae” (Tivoli, Rome) is organizing a conference with the theme of: “Leonardo and Antiquity”, at Hadrian’s Villa. At the dawn of the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci visited Villa Adriana, then known as “old Tivoli”. The conference in preparation intends to explore ways in which this journey influenced Leonardo's genius, also in the context of the time period and work of Leonardo's contemporaries and/or disciples. In the company of internationally recognized keynote speakers, the conference welcomes the participation of both Italian and foreign researchers and scholars who answer this call for papers, as a major focus of the conference will be to place Leonardo's trip to Tivoli within a broader cultural context. The deadline for the paper proposals is fixed at January 25th, 2019.

  The spatialisation and temporalisation of hospitality

  We would like to question the spatial dimensions of hospitality, that is to say the way the possibility of hospitality can be conceived spatially. Correlatively, we would like to investigate the fact that the lived experience of hospitality corresponds to a temporal dynamic of gestures, relations, moments that are necessarily associated with spaces. Therefore, how does a dialogue take place, or not, in the design phase between these spatial and temporal dimensions (components) of hospitality? How is hospitality incorporated into the intentions of architects, landscape designers, artists, designers? How can one formulate in the very design phase architectural, landscape, design, artistic proposals which contribute towards hospitality?
