  Writing the city [into the urban]

  In the aftermath of the May 1968 uprising in Paris, Henri Lefebvre published in 1970 his classic treatise La Révolution Urbaine where he pointedly placed the urban in the centre of this revolution, identifying a theoretical need for the concept of the urban as a planetary possibility, one he considered more appropriate than a redundant notion of the city as a social scientific object. This workshop is a step in this direction where, coming 50 years after the backlash of ’68, this event aims to establish a conversation between the city and the urban by drawing on the notion of "ethnographic theorisation" where the theoretical potential of the urban can be harnessed from ethnographic insights of the city. It explores contingent ways in which the city can be written into the urban through manoeuvres that engage with the process of writing the city across disciplines from literary cultures to urban studies

  Temporary research contract for an investigation in environmental epidemiology

  Les méthodes participatives en santé environnement se sont développées au croisement des questions de justice environnementale et de sociologie des sciences dès le début des années 90 aux États-Unis. En France, face à une question de santé environnementale, ces méthodes inspirées de la popular epidemiology et de la street science ne sont en revanche que très peu mobilisées, du fait d’un fonctionnement très centralisé des sciences réglementaires et de l’expertise scientifique en santé publique. C’est dans ce contexte que l’équipe du projet Fos-Epseal s’est intéressée aux questionnements des habitants riverains de la zone industrialo-portuaire de Fos (ZIF), dans la région de Marseille, concernant les impacts sur leur santé des polluants générés par une activité industrielle intensive de plus de 40 ans. Dans le cadre du prolongement du projet, l'équipe recrute un· enquêteur/enquêtrice de niveau master 1 ou 2.  Le travail du/de la sociologue ou anthropologue consistera dans le recueil de données sur le terrain aux portes à porte grâce à l’outil qualtrics. La personne recrutée devra également réalisée des notes de terrain et pourra alimenter la réflexion collective à partir de ses données et de l’expérience directement issue du terrain.

  Spatial (in)justices, languages and discourse: political theorisations and interventions

  9th international urban sociolinguistics days (JISU)

  Depuis, 1999, les Journées internationales de sociolinguistique urbaine (JISU) poursuivent l’ambition théorique et méthodologique de couvrir le champ urbain sous le double rapport de l’espace et des langues. Ces journées expriment la nécessité de confronter les perspectives de recherche sur des thèmes et des concepts relevant de l’urbanité, de l’urbanisation linguistique et plus largement de tout fait sociolinguistique de dominance induit par le modèle culturel urbain. Cette neuvième session ambitionne de poursuivre les questionnements portés par les JISU à l’aune du spatial turn (en assumant l’héritage intellectuel d’Henri Lefebvre et ses implications tant scientifiques, méthodologiques que politiques), en les ouvrant sur une conceptualisation quasi absente des travaux en sociolinguistique (y compris urbaine même si les faits relevés y émargent) : l’(in)justice spatiale.

  Le football fait l’objet d’un étonnant paradoxe : en dépit d’une place sociale et culturelle centrale, il a longtemps été ignoré par les sciences humaines, sauf par quelques « afficionados ». Aujourd’hui, ce dédain que lui témoignait la recherche académique appartient au passé.   Examining the connections between rural land and violent conflict in Africa

  The goal of the issue is the foster dialogue between two fields of research whose topics overlap, but whose specialization limits their reciprocal enrichment research into wars in the social sciences on the one hand, and into land tenure dynamics and land related conflicts on the other hand. The issue will seek to combine contibutions from these two thematic fields, including both empirical knowledge about the complex ties between violent internal conflicts and the land issues affecting rural territories, and methodological ant theoretical approaches to better describe and analyse the dynamics behind the unstable or "hybrid" social changes produced by such conflicts in Africa.

  Global '68 - Solidarity in Alliance and Global History

  1968 was a year of offensives, uprisings, and demonstrations against capitalism and imperialism, for liberation and emancipation and the war in Vietnam was its epicenter. The events claimed many victories for democracy, equality, and emancipation, but also provoked deep, abiding repression. A counterfeit history has subsequently erased police violence and the deaths of participants, removed workers, women, students, and indigenous peoples from the picture, and eliminated anti-Americanism, anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, as well as the profound influences of the wars and interventions in Algeria, Latin America, and Vietnam. “Global 68” will retrieve the aspirations, energies, memories, and histories of this worldwide movement and offer hope to a new generation of activists.

  Nouvelles pratiques sociales journal vol. 30, no. 2 (spring 2019)

  Quels liens existe-il entre art, intervention et justice sociale ? Que signifient les expressions : intervention, pratique, intervention individuelle, communautaire, engagement social, changement social ? Tout d’abord, comment définir « intervention » et « art » ? Une simple recherche Google recense au moins 29 synonymes d’intervention. Ici, nous explorerons les interventions visant le changement social. Donc, comment ceci s’articule-t-il ? Comment l’art intervient-il sur le social ? Comment le social peut-il être appréhendé par l’art ? Comment l’art et la culture conjugués à une approche de changement social peuvent-ils transformer des institutions, des pratiques ou à tout le moins en atténuer les conséquences difficiles ? Comment éviter l’instrumentalisation de l’art ? Comment parler de résistances et de résiliences ? Que veut dire Art, avec un grand A ?

  Innovations in higher education in Africa

  Cet appel à contribution invite chercheurs et praticiens universitaires à réfléchir sur l’innovation dans l’enseignement supérieur en Afrique. Car, comme le montrent Affa’a, Grisé et Verna (2003), en dehors de la pédagogie universitaire, l’innovation est l’une des dimensions les moins explorées de l’enseignement universitaire en Afrique. Pourtant, l’histoire de cet ordre d’enseignement dans ce contexte est jalonnée de réformes et d’initiatives nouvelles dont la particularité est qu’elles sont constitutives des étapes ou strates de cette évolution (Makosso et al. (2009). Comme l’écrit De Ketele (2010), l’image d’une université peu innovante est fausse, en dépit de la traditionalité de ses missions de formation. Ng’ethe Njuguna (2003) explique que l’observation des pratiques, discours et modes de fonctionnement des institutions universitaires montrent qu’ils se nourrissent de nouveautés et d’idées nouvelles.

  Impressionism and ideas

  L’ambition de cette journée d’étude est d’aborder l’impressionnisme en fonction des grandes idées de son temps, d’interroger son insertion dans le contexte intellectuel – scientifique et philosophique, mais aussi politique et religieux – de la France de la seconde moitié du XIX^e siècle, afin de mieux comprendre et « situer » la pensée de ses membres. Si ce contexte a fait l’objet de nombreuses études, celles-ci ont presque toujours été menées par rapport aux seules œuvres des impressionnistes, et non par rapport à leur pensée. En effet, aujourd’hui encore, poser la question de la pensée impressionniste, c’est peu ou prou se confronter à une inconnue. Y a-t-il une pensée impressionniste ? L’impressionnisme « pense »-t-il ? Le temps paraît venu d’y consacrer une attention particulière.

  The Publisher’s Discourse

  This issue aims to enrich knowledge and analyses of the words and discourse of publishers, that is to say, of those individuals who are responsible for the development, production and distribution of books or periodicals. We will adopt here a trans-national and trans-historic perspective (19th to 21st centuries) at the junction of the sociology of publishing, of cultural history and of intellectual history in order to identify points of convergence amongst various case studies. In what ways have publishers revealed themselves through their words and in writing since their debut as social figures in the 19th century through to their contemporary incarnations? How has the place of publishers in literary, intellectual and editorial fields been constructed by discourses that accompany the act of publishing?

  Sharing meals. Social aspects of eating and cooking together

  Eating involves many other dimensions than just ingesting food. It is especially a social act, as it involves the social position and relationships of the individual in all of the included practices: supplying, cooking, dressing, ordering, ingesting, clearing, washing-up, managing left-overs, etc.  This symposium offers to explore, with a social science approach, the different dimensions associated with sharing meals (non exhaustive): Cultural differences in the manners of sharing meals; Specificity of the sharing of cooking times regarding the sharing of meal times; Use of commensality as a social action mean; Symbolic representation of the benefits of sharing meals (psychological, physiological, social); Comparison of meals regarding other eating times (snacking); Political/Diplomatic use of meals; Organization, perception and role of meals in institutions (school canteens, hospital, nursing homes, prisons…).
