  Tilting

  Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge

  This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

  Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

  Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)

  The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

  The drudges of the Axis : exploitable persecuted persons and ambivalent persecutors during WWII (Asia, Europe, Latin America)

  This meeting is a continuation of the UFA (French-German University) Montpellier-Weimar Colloquium "Construction of myths of war heroes (Germany, France, Japan) organized by Philippe Wellnitz and Gérard Siary in Berlin in 2014. After having there discussed the ambivalence in the construction of "war-heroe", this new conference is interested this time in two other ambivalences associated with the Second World War: those of the positioning of certain host states and "the ethics of survival" of persecuted persons who fled from Axis-occupied territories to other Axis-allied or to neutral States.

  Eschatology is one of the central components of medieval Christian culture. The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

The event that we are disseminating is being organised within the this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean.   Inspiré à la fois par la richesse des terres du Grand-Est sur les traces d'un monachisme féminin original et le profond renouvellement de l'historiographie et de l'archéologie concernant les femmes au haut Moyen Âge durant les dernières années, ce colloque voudrait faire le portrait de la variété des femmes comme personnes et comme membres de communautés, et préciser les caractéristiques de la féminité en Occident avant le XII^e siècle. En utilisant toutes les sources documentaires, il s'intéressera à la condition des femmes les mieux documentées mais également, dans une démarche d'anthropologie historique, à celles des couches les moins aisées de la société. L'archéologie funéraire avec toutes ses disciplines connexes, contribuera à nourrir le dialogue sur l'anthropologie du féminin durant le premier Moyen Âge.

  Le prochain numéro de Perspective: actualité en histoire de l’art sera consacré aux transferts culturels entre le Portugal et les pays lusophones (Angola, Brésil, Cap-Vert, Guinée-Bissau, Guinée équatoriale, Macao, Mozambique, Sao Tomé-et-Principe, Timor oriental). Il s’agit, dans ce numéro, de reconsidérer de manière critique les discours de l’histoire de l’art ancrés dans la perspective de l’État-nation, en examinant l’étendue et les spécificités du territoire en tant que constructions culturelles et historiques. Se détournant ainsi des approches endogènes ou essentialistes, nous proposons d’envisager le sujet au-delà des stéréotypes, tels que la mythologie des grandes découvertes et le luso-tropicalisme, les représentations identitaires, la dichotomie entre beaux-arts et arts populaires ou encore la division entre centre et périphérie.

  L’université d’été, organisée par des littéraires et des philosophes, vise à explorer les caractéristiques et les évolutions d’un complexe de représentations et de réflexions, qui ont acquis dans l’Occident des XX^e et XXI^e siècles une actualité particulière, mais ont aussi, selon des modalités spécifiques, hanté d’autres époques. Elles concernent le devenir temporel entropique des œuvres, des arts, des artistes face à ce qu’on pourrait appeler l’utopie de l’éternité. La fin de l’art peut se penser en termes de décadence, dépérissement, décrépitude, mais aussi de germe, renouvellement et table rase. Cette réversibilité possible est un des enjeux que les organisateurs souhaitent envisager. La perspective sera clairement intersémiotique, et n’entend pas se restreindre à un champ artistique spécifique, ni à une période ou une aire culturelle particulière.

  73rd congress of the Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française (IHAF)

  Pour son 73^e congrès, qui aura lieu à Orford en Estrie les 15, 16 et 17 octobre 2020, l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française sollicite des communications qui mobilisent la notion d’événement, mais également qui la mettent à l’épreuve et la questionnent, des communications qui cherchent à révéler des aspects méconnus d’événements bien enracinés dans les récits historiques, mais également qui mettent ou remettent en scène des événements oubliés de l’historiographie ou de la mémoire collective, des communications qui réfléchissent à la manière dont l’événement est fabriqué, historicisé. Au final, nous n’avons pas à choisir entre l’événement et la longue durée, mais il y a certainement une nécessité de réfléchir à la place de l’événement dans la longue durée.
