Knowing the planet: environment, technology, and development in the 19th and 20th centuries

This one-day workshop will interrogate the relationship between environment and technology in developmental projects, practices, and discourses during the 19th and 20th centuries. Several fields such as histories of environment, histories of technology, global history, and histories of development have recently expanded in new directions that could provide fruitful dialogues. All these scholarly shifts are important to a deeper historicization of environmental knowledge in the context of global climate crisis. Bringing together case studies from different geographical settings across the 19th and 20th centuries, the workshop will ask what role has technology played in the production of environmental knowledge? What role has environmental knowledge played in the politics of ‘progress’?

Science, Technology and Nationalism in India

Although the question of nationalism in India has been of interest to many social science scholars, the relationship between science and nationalism has seldom been discussed in an in-depth manner. STS perspectives and debates allow a framework that investigates the pivotal role and position of science and technology in the realization of state policies in India through several technoscientific projects and illustrates how deeply it is enmeshed within the larger political and social goals of national growth and development. Therefore, we would like to investigate the role science and technology play in these imbrications, the challenges they pose, and how these new assemblages reconfigure power relations between the Global North and the Global South within India, between States and markets.

Ecotourism and Ecotravel in the Anthropocene

Green Marble 2023. International Meeting on Anthropocene Studies and Ecocriticism

Green Marble 2023 is an international scientific meeting focused on the theme “Ecotourism and Ecotravel in the Anthropocene”. We specifically seek to address and discuss how ecotourism, understood as a form of tourism that involves responsible travel (using sustainable transport) to natural areas, conserving the environment and improving the well-being of the local population, can contribute to a good Anthropocene, the one where we become able to use the unprecedented collective power to act in/on the planet we acquire in a balanced and fair way.

    Gold: wealth or curse?

    Revue « Afrique contemporaine »

Recent years have brought a dramatic upsurge in Africa’s gold output – boosting the export earnings and goverment revenues of producer countries, fuelling hopes of additional resources for development. But many also fear there could be negative spillovers, particularly in eroding stability and good governance, the so-called “resource curse”. These are just two facets of what is a wide debate debate, as the gold sector has multiple economic, political, environmental and symbolic ramifications. This issue of Afrique contemporaine aims to provide studies on different aspects, focusing as much as possible on the link between gold and the various forms of conflict.

The French aeronautical industries and the world: international cooperation and internationalisation strategies from the Liberation to the 1980s

This study day proposes to address several themes linked together by the relations that the French aeronautical industries have established and maintained with various countries and foreign aeronautical firms in a context of recovery, restructuring and development of this French industry. It is intended to highlight international industrial cooperation, its creation and implementation processes as well as the actors involved and their roles in these original partnerships. The aim of this study session is also to reveal the evolution of these forms of collective production and the specialisation of the actors involved during the period under consideration. Finally, it tends to show that far from being limited to industrial cooperation, the global ambition of French aeronautical firms also developed without foreign aid thanks to internationalisation strategies that evolved during the said period.

Financing agricultural and food transformations. Practices, mechanisms, collective action, and public policies

« Revue internationale des études du développement » n°254

This issue is a continuation of the series of thematic issues that the Revue Tiers Monde, now the Revue internationale des études du développement has regularly published for 25 years on the subject of financial inclusion (no. 145, 1996; no. 172, 2002; no. 197, 2009; no. 225, 2016). This issue calls for original papers based on field research that contribute to knowing how the transformation of agricultural and rural systems in emerging and developing countries is financed, and more specifically, how farmers are financed. It aims, in particular, at delving into the new practices in the field of agricultural and rural financing, which is often marginalized in development financing policies.

    Brazil, an independent country ?

Rethinking “dependency theory” 200 years after 1822

On the occasion of the bicentennial of Brazil’s proclamation of independence (September 7,1822), this conference examines the paradigm of “dependency theory.” We will consider both how Brazilian intellectuals contributed to dependency theory and what their analyses offer for thinking about Brazil’s independence and place in the world today. The oeuvre of Brazilian dependentistas insisted on the impossibility of understanding the history of Brazil and Latin America without considering the complex dynamics between the national and the international, between domestic political and economic structures and the broader world system of which they were part. This conference, 200 years after Brazil’s formal independence, evaluates the promise and limitations of their analysis, at once historicizing dependency theory and using the authors associated with it to better understand the present.
