  Society, culture, community in the United Kingdom (1970-79)

  This two-day conference focusing on British society of the 1970s seeks to enlarge and to alter perspectives on the period. The intention is to examine the dynamic of contradiction, inventiveness and tensions that is at work. The intention of the conference-organizers is to circumvent and thus question any “teleological” or linear reading of the period in terms of the necessary “coming of Thatcherism” in the United Kingdom, where the politics and culture of the period are read as so many symptoms or omens of the 1979 election result. The aim is to focus on the plurality of conflicting possibilities evident in the period, and therefore on the contingency of outcomes.

  Transições. Percursos, linguagens e estruturas em tempos de mudança

  O ritmo acelerado das mudanças históricas marcou a época contemporânea e, em particular, as últimas cinco décadas. No âmbito do século XX, sucederam-se experiências de mudança com tipologias e relevâncias variáveis, tendo afectado não só as estruturas (estados, instituições, partidos, etc) como também os indivíduos e a própria linguagem. Poderá, assim, afirmar-se que as mudanças, ou as transições, numa interpretação mais abrangente do termo, foram centrais nos processos históricos. Contudo, poucas propostas oferecidas pela ciência histórica têm refletido sobre este fenómeno – as transições e as suas consequências – num contexto geográfico e temporal alargado.

  The peace of Fexhe (1316) and revolts in Liège and western Europe

  Des chercheurs liégeois, belges, français, allemand et canadien permettront d’affiner nos connaissances de ce texte majeur de notre histoire. La paix de Fexhe apparaîtra aussi comme un élément d’un mouvement plus vaste, celui des contestations politiques et sociales et du mouvement représentatif au début du XIV^e siècle. On comprendra donc mieux le but de ces conflagrations et des textes qui en furent le produit. Seront également interrogés les réseaux structurant les différents partis en présence, la formation intellectuelle des élites laïques comme ecclésiastiques, le rapport au pouvoir et au seigneur, voire au souverain. Les prolongements de cet événement majeur sur le plan de la mémoire et de l’histoire du droit jusqu’à notre époque seront également évoqués.

  The Price of Peace: Modernising the Ancien Régime?

  Europe 1815-1848

  In many historiographic traditions, the so-called "Restoration" has been depicted as an awkward interval between the Napoleonic Wars and the age of nationalism. This international conference has the ambition of breaking down old myths and stereotypes about the ‘Restoration’ in order to think more broadly and openly about the key transitions and issues. The conference will revolve around the provocative historiographical issue of whether the post-Napoleonic order represented an attempt to reconcile the heritage of the Ancien Régime with a deeply transformed world. Topics explored by panels of invited experts from across Europe will include Rethinking the "Restoration", New departures in international relations, Constitutions vs. Charters, Rebirth of composite monarchies, Before and Beyond the Nation, Historicising the Ancien Régime?, New borders and old identities.

  Conflicts of memory: arts, history, commemorations

  This conference will focus not only on historical events which fuel conflicting memories, but also on works of art – including those produced at the margins of institutions – which encourage or undermine the consensual interpretations of the past. Do artworks promoting a reinterpretation of the past help foster a new type of relationship between the present and the past? Do they open onto a different future? Some works spark off debates and suggest that memory is imbued with potentially irreconcilable sentiments. Historical materials and artworks convey this tension, articulating the gap between dominant and dominated memories. Does art help resolve conflicts or does it perpetuate them? Comparing different artists’ original takes on similar historical events may help us better understand the stakes behind conflicting memories.

  The words of politics (1815-1848)

  La volonté d’invention d’un monde neuf, cette « radicalité fondatrice » portée par la Révolution française, a eu sa traduction frappante et manifeste dans le surgissement d’une langue politique nouvelle. Notions fondamentales de l’univers de pensée démocratique (liberté, constitution, nation, patriote, souveraineté du peuple ou citoyen), mais aussi termes plus éphémères et contextuels, tel « s’endécader », constituèrent alors autant une révolution des pratiques qu’une révolution sémantique : Mercier, dans son ouvrage fondateur Néologie ou vocabulaire des mots nouveaux (1801), enregistre ces innovations de la langue et ces mutations du discours, tout en s’intéressant à de nouveaux vocables plus politiques tels que agitateur, caricaturer, chants patriotiques, liberticide, républicide, républicaniser. En regard, et étonnamment, la langue politique du premier XIX^e siècle, marquée par la redéfinition polémique du vocabulaire ou sa persistance offensive, a, quant à elle, été singulièrement négligée. C’est sur ce constat que s’est construit notre projet de colloque.

  Theme issue of the "Temps des médias" historical review

  Ce numéro vise à interroger la présence de la « fausse information » dans les médias sur une chronologie la plus vaste possible. Dans un contexte de défiance vis-à-vis des émetteurs de l’information mais aussi d’essor des rubriques et supports visant à rétablir « la » vérité, il a semblé stimulant de s’interroger sur la teneur réelle ou imaginaire de la fausse information, sur ses ressorts et sa fabrication ; de saisir ce que la « fausse information » manifeste du système médiatique auquel elle appartient. Quelle place occupe-t-elle et sous quelles formes ? Quels enjeux dévoile-t-elle ? Comment a-t-elle pu être porteuse de significations très diverses à travers les âges et les contextes politiques ?

  Relays in opinion, mirrors of action, sloughs of passion

  La presse bénéficie des libertés de pensée et d’expression reconnues par la Déclaration des droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen : 137 journaux politiques naissent en 1789. La diversité de leurs auteurs et de leurs opinions, confirmée les années suivantes, compte pour beaucoup dans la structuration et les clivages de la vie politique nationale, depuis les royalistes Actes des Apôtres et l’Amy du Roi jusqu’aux populaires Ami du Peuple de Marat ou Père Duchesne d’Hébert, en passant par les feuilles des girondins Gorsas, Louvet ou Mercier. Presse militante d’un format et d’un tirage limités, riche de ses avis, de ses caricatures, de ses outrances comme de ses timidités, liée le plus souvent – car les rédactions collectives sont l’exception – au sort d’un homme qui joue sa carrière politique ou littéraire, elle vit des abonnements, des ventes à la criée, du placardage, de la lecture publique dans les clubs, à commencer par celui du Cercle social. Elle subit la censure à partir de 1792, d’abord tournée contre les écrits royalistes, puis l’année suivante contre les « fédéralistes », mesures renforcées par la loi des suspects.

  Le propos de cette rencontre est non seulement de mesurer l’influence de la religion dans l’idéalisation du pouvoir, mais encore d’étendre les perspectives de recherche aux principaux domaines d’exercice de l’autorité suprême. L’image du prince se reflète en effet dans ses rapports avec les élites et avec les marges, avec les fidèles chrétiens et non-chrétiens, avec ses adversaires intérieurs et extérieurs. Entre le IV^e et le VII^e siècle, la notion de prince chrétien constitue peut-être moins une donnée du réel qu'un revendication à illustrer et à défendre.
