  Unusual looks: objects, places, agents

  On the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution and the inauguration of the Paris-Athens 1780-1919 exhibition, the Louvre Museum and the French School at Athens are organizing an international conference, which will be held at the Louvre Museum and the Institute of France, from 22 to 23 April 2021 under the auspices of the Académie des Inscriptions et des Belles Lettres. This conference also benefits from the support of the Initiative 1821-2021. The languages of the conference will be French and English.

  Call for papers - Europe

  The history of Frenceh cultural diplomacy

  Dans le cadre de la célébration du centenaire de l’Association française d’action artistique (AFAA) et de la création du Service des Œuvres, le ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères, le ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères et l’Institut français organisent, conjointement avec l’université de la Sorbonne-Nouvelle / Paris 3, un ensemble d’événements afin d’étudier l’histoire de la diplomatie culturelle française. D’autres établissements d’enseignement supérieur ou de recherche sont susceptibles de devenir partenaires de cette démarche. Parmi ces événements, un colloque scientifique est prévu au printemps 2022 à l’université de la Sorbonne-Nouvelle, dont le champ d’étude portera sur l’histoire et l’action du réseau culturel français à l’étranger, qui comprend les services de coopération et d’action culturelle, les instituts français, les alliances françaises. Il portera également sur les politiques publiques qui ont sous-tendu cette action. Les actes de ce colloque feront l’objet d’une publication.

  Italy and Yugoslavia in the Interwar Period

  Monographic issue of “Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea”

  The signing of the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920 made it possible to find a solution to the Italian-Yugoslav dispute over the north-eastern Adriatic border, a solution that would last substantially until the Italian invasion of the neighbouring kingdom in World War 2. Relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, particularly since the end of the 1920s, with the beginning of the more decidedly revisionist phase of fascist foreign policy regarding the structures of the Danubian-Balkan area, were never easy. However, the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo represented an undoubtedly important moment, which greatly contributed to restore a climate of collaboration between the two countries, heavily jeopardized by border nationalism and by the D’Annunzio’s “impresa di Fiume”, interrupted precisely by the Treaty of Rapallo.

  The army and police during the health crisis in Central and Western Africa

  Covid-19, as an indicator of capacities and incapacities

  L'association béninoise d'études stratégiques (ABESS) et la fondation Konrad Adenauer lancent un appel à contribution pour le premier numéro de la revue Paix et Sécurité en Afrique Subsaharienne consacré au thème des armées et de la police en temps de crise sanitaire en Afrique de l’Ouest et centrale : la Covid-19 comme révélatrice de capacités et d’inaptitudes. La notion de sécurité humaine promue par les Nations Unies n’a jamais été autant mise en exergue par des actions civilo-militaires coordonnées au service de l’humain et de la vie, même si le Conseil de Sécurité n’a pas pu voter une résolution considérant le Covid-19 et ses conséquences transfrontières comme une « menace à la paix et à la sécurité internationales », tel que cela avait été le cas avec la résolution 2177 (2014) concernant la maladie à virus Ebola. Cette crise multidimensionnelle est également une crise du multilatéralisme. Il importe donc d’étudier les mécanismes nationaux de résilience construits autour des (in)capacités des forces de défense et de sécurité des États d’Afrique de l’Ouest et centrale principalement mais également de développer une approche comparée avec d’autres régions du monde.

  Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, the Universities of Toulouse (CAS) and Montpellier (EMMA) in the South of France are joining forces to organize an international interdisciplinary conference on these events. Its aim is to analyze, not only the events and their short-term consequences with a two-decade hindsight, but also the many ways in which those events have been perceived, represented, commented upon, co-opted or rewritten along the years. It also invites reflections upon the way in which some of these responses, representations or co-optations have been in their turn received, commented upon and used in this 20-year period.

  Ce numéro spécial de la revue L'Espace Politique questionne la commémoration sous l'angle géographique et géopolitique. Alors que s’achève le centenaire de la première guerre mondiale, nous souhaitons interroger à nouveaux frais le phénomène commémoratif et les politiques mémorielles, dont l’étude connait un certain renouvellement (Garcia, 2001, Kesteloot C., Van Ypersele L., 2016). La commémoration recouvre une grande diversité de pratiques loin de se restreindre à la mémoire des guerres (Ashplant, 2000, West, 2016) ou des grandes figures nationales (par exemple incarnées par les panthéonisations en France). Ce numéro pourra ainsi s’ouvrir à une approche élargie du phénomène commémoratif.

  Special Issue of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence

  Clausewitz, still perhaps the most important and referenced theorist of war, was deeply influenced by the thought and philosophy of his own time. Although Clausewitz rejected an abstract philosophy of war, he highlighted that his approach was a philosophical attempt to understand war. His “wondrous trinity,” as well as his dialectics of defense and offense are essentially hybrid conceptualizations. By elaborating the philosophical foundations of Clausewitz’s theory, this special issue aims to contribute to a better understanding of the ongoing transformation of war and violent action in a globalized world.

  Religions and nationalisms

  Au cœur de la vague mondiale et contemporaine des nationalismes, les religions apparaissent comme une ressource idéologique et mobilisatrice. Face à ce phénomène, l’objet du colloque est de se demander comment l’articulation entre nationalismes et religions est approchée principalement du point de vue théologique dans les différentes religions (christianisme, islam, hindouisme, etc.). Peut-on mettre en lumière des méthodologies ou des épistémologies communes qui justifient les idéologies nationalistes (lecture littéraliste des textes sacrés, eschatologie, thème de l’élection, etc.) ? Peut-on penser une théologie du nationalisme qui reste ouverte à l’autre (l'étranger, le non-national) ? Il s'agira ainsi d'étudier le phénomène dans son expression sociologique et politique en son lien avec les discours théologiques.

  The impact of terrorism

  Violence: An international journal

  Terrorism has an impact on the societies that it affects or targets. While this impact can be one-off or limited, nowadays—with the terrorism of radical Islamic groups such as al-Qaeda and, more recently, ISIS—it tends to be heavy and long lasting, even if it does change over time. Its political implications relate first and foremost to democracy and the separation of powers, and can lead to the unraveling and abuse of existing structures, in ways that work to the government’s advantage. If the impact of terrorism is lasting, it becomes cultural: individuals change their habits and behaviors, learning for example not to be passive in the event of a terrorist attack, and going about their daily lives keeping in the back of their minds the possibility that a terrorist attack could take place. Terrorism changes people’s understanding of reality. Terrorism also gives rise to policies that are repressive, but also preventive, or those aimed at exiting violence, using deradicalization programs for example.

  The politics and geopolitics of translation

  The multilingual circulation of knowledge and transnational histories of geography

  In the last fifty years, the field of the history of geography has moved from an approach dominated by National Schools to an attention to the circulation of knowledge in its multiple scales. The history of science and of geography have in the last decades incorporated concepts such as transit, networks, mobilities, the transnational, circulation, centre of calculation, spaces of knowledge, geographies of science, spatial mobility of knowledge, geographies of reading and geographies of the book. More recently, a turn has emerged towards considering the dynamics and necessities of decolonizing the history of geography. This work is turning the field of the history of geography into one of the most dynamic areas of the discipline. Yet we suggest that questions of language and translation have remained under-determined in this new field. Translation and writing have not received the same attention as, for instance, departmental histories, sites of museums, laboratories, botanic gardens, and scientific societies, for example. We suggest, therefore, that new perspectives opened up by translation studies can open new windows on the history of geography.

  Religion and transnational migrations (19th-20th centuries)

  Study day of the French Association for Contemporary Religious History

  Depuis vingt-cinq ans, la question migratoire est prégnante dans le discours politique et médiatique, suscitant débat, interrogation, mais aussi travaux scientifiques. Si les chercheurs ont investi ce champ d’étude, l’analyse des interactions du phénomène avec le religieux est plus récente, mais souligne la place centrale qu’a pu occuper la religion dans les processus migratoires – aux origines de la migration, comme support de celle-ci, comme ressource à la fois spirituelle et sociale pour les déplacés –, et les transformations du religieux qu’ils induisent. La réflexion historique sur les articulations entre religion et migration dans le cadre transnational est à même de compléter ces travaux des sociologues, anthropologues, géographes et théologiens. On considèrera les grands mouvements de population à l’époque contemporaine (XIX^e - XX^e s.), forcés ou volontaires, sans exclure l’exil ni les migrations plus ponctuelles.

  L'objectif du colloque « Documents et documentation, approche rétro-prospective » est d'interroger le paradigme documentaire dans la première partie du XX^e siècle et ses résurgences dans la période contemporaine, sous la forme proclamée ici ou là du « retour au document ». À travers une approche pluridisciplinaire (sciences de l'information et de la communication, histoire, arts, documentation), trois axes de recherche nous permettront de répondre aux enjeux spécifiques liés à ce concept de paradigme documentaire : les formes et matérialités qui résultent des innovations techniques et industrielles ; le renouvellement des modalités de visualisation de la connaissance, entendue comme nouveau langage et enfin l’articulation entre lieux de savoirs et lieux de pouvoirs.
