Contending Representations: Questioning Republicanism in Early Modern Genoa (1559-1684)

In the past thirty years, several studies have been devoted to the political and cultural flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called ‘siglo de los Genoveses’, between 1528 and 1630, when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important epicenter of artistic and literary production. Yet little attention has been granted to the cultural and economic crisis that followed or to how Genoese republican state power was represented during the long seventeenth century, especially in relation to neighbouring polities. To address this gap, the conference will explore how the Genoese Republic shaped its political image between 1559 – the year of the publication of Oberto Foglietta’s Delle cose della repubblica di Genova – and 1684, when Genoa was bombed by the French. We intend to address questions such as how did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented by the Genoese community in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by other Italian and non-Italian political writers? And how did prevailing depictions of absolutism influence republican rhetoric?

This conference brings together curators, artists, scholars, and other intellectuals and cultural activists working on East-Central European heritage, to reflect on how the main trends of decolonial debate are intersecting in practical and theoretical terms with the heritage sector, with a particular focus on museums in the region. The conference will place special emphasis on mapping both the range of colonial histories embedded in, as well as decolonial approaches to, museum collections and practices in East-Central Europe.

The SIPCs were born in 1996 on a Brazilian initiative and have been held every two years in Latin America to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results among scientists from various disciplines who find in Norbert Elias’ work a source of guidance in facing the challenges of today’s world and who share an interest in social sciences adjusted to reality.

MemWar. Memory and forgetting of war and trauma in the 20th century

Le XXIe siècle nait de l’histoire tourmentée du XXe, avec ses deux guerres mondiales et les autres conflits de dimension européenne, comme la Guerre civile espagnole. Ce colloque, organisé par le groupe de recherche « MemWar. Mémoires et oublis des guerres et des traumatismes du XX^e siècle » du Département de Langues et cultures modernes de l’Université de Gênes, vise à analyser les modalités de transmission mémorielle de ces conflits au XXI^e siècle, les représentations de ces derniers, les points aveugles et/ou obscurs de ce processus mémoriel, y compris dans une optique critique (Ricoeur, 2003) et, enfin, comment se développent les rapports de force entre discours officiel et contre-discours.

Ses activités portent sur tous les aspects des sciences du langage, des lettres, des langues et de la communication. Elle ne publie que des articles inédits ayant obtenu l’approbation positive de deux instructeurs (spécialistes) anonymes. Compte tenu des spécificités de la revue Akofena, la langue de publication est le français ou l’anglais. Toutefois, pour les articles rédigés en anglais, le contributeur devra accompagner son texte de la traduction française du résumé et des mots-clés.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge

This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

"This thing of darkness": the night in anglophone arts and literature

Night is often seen as the other side of the day, meaning darkness, and potential disorders. But these presumably negative connotations also bear witness to the metaphoric richness of the night, explored relentlessly in literature, the visual arts, and on film. The night is the locus of an ambiguity and indeterminacy, which should not be viewed merely as factors of disorder, but as possibilities for different lives and identities, which seem to radically elude the norms governing diurnal practices. Nonetheless, is it merely a form of transgression or does it inaugurate a mode of existence of its own? Furthermore, to what extent do technical, social, and cultural changes influence those perceptions by blurring the line between day and night? With the inexorable generalisation of lighting and the ubiquity of screens, is the night a thing of the past?

Quel rapport une révolution politique, moment tout entier tendu vers le changement, et donc vers l'avenir, entretient-elle avec les modèles du passé ? Est-il possible de « se passer du passé » ? Le changement brutal, la « régénération » et la « table rase », leitmotive du discours de la Révolution française, ne sont-ils que de vains mots ? […] La question du rapport conflictuel et ambigu des révolutions politiques aux modèles du passé nous invite à réfléchir à la fois aux formes discursives, notamment rhétoriques, dont hérite la Révolution française, et à la manière dont cette dernière les récupère, les rejette ou les transforme, et à la fois à l'influence qu'exerce à son tour la Révolution française sur les discours des révolutions suivantes : là encore, s'agit-il d'une imitation (et, le cas échéant, de quel ordre ?), d'un refus, ou d'une métamorphose ?

The current state of natural law - from the vitality of doctrines to the unthoughts of positive law

De la vitalité des doctrines aux impensés du droit positif

À la différence de leurs homologues étrangers, rares sont les juristes français qui cultivent actuellement une référence au droit naturel dans leurs écrits. En France, les doctrines du droit naturel semblent être devenues un objet d’étude exclusivement passé dans le champ de l’histoire des idées politiques. On attribue souvent ce repli au triomphe du normativisme kelsénien qui incarnerait l’aboutissement de la neutralité axiologique, en proposant une science émancipée de tout ancrage métaphysique et théologique. À y regarder de plus près, on doit constater la formidable diversité, tant sur le fond que dans la méthode, des courants et des approches qui se cachent derrière cette appellation – à commencer par la distinction entre droit naturel « classique » et « moderne ». Peut-on véritablement considérer qu’une telle diversité, le plus souvent mal identifiée, a disparu – ou a-t-elle simplement pris de nouveaux visages en abandonnant une étiquette stigmatisante ? C’est ce que les travaux de cette journée d’étude chercheront à établir.

Comprendre ou construire les situations d’apprentissage instrumentées qui mettent en œuvre de tels environnements soulève de nombreuses questions, auxquelles des travaux de recherche ou des expérimentations commencent à apporter des éléments de réponse. Ce colloque NEO-SAI2020 doit permettre de les réunir et produire un état de l'art et des avancées dans ce domaine, en matière de recherches comme d'ingénierie.

Maxim Kantor – The Future of Humanity

The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

The politics and geopolitics of translation

The multilingual circulation of knowledge and transnational histories of geography

In the last fifty years, the field of the history of geography has moved from an approach dominated by National Schools to an attention to the circulation of knowledge in its multiple scales. The history of science and of geography have in the last decades incorporated concepts such as transit, networks, mobilities, the transnational, circulation, centre of calculation, spaces of knowledge, geographies of science, spatial mobility of knowledge, geographies of reading and geographies of the book. More recently, a turn has emerged towards considering the dynamics and necessities of decolonizing the history of geography. This work is turning the field of the history of geography into one of the most dynamic areas of the discipline. Yet we suggest that questions of language and translation have remained under-determined in this new field. Translation and writing have not received the same attention as, for instance, departmental histories, sites of museums, laboratories, botanic gardens, and scientific societies, for example. We suggest, therefore, that new perspectives opened up by translation studies can open new windows on the history of geography.

La Revue Française d’Éthique Appliquée (RFEA) porte l’ambition d’une réflexion éthique impliquée, transversale et interdisciplinaire. Pour son numéro 10, la revue lance un appel à contribution sur l’idée d’un « avenir ouvert », sa désirabilité, ses conditions de possibilité, ses multiples définitions et ses enjeux, dans les champs disciplinaires de l’éducation, de la médecine, de l’intelligence artificielle, de l’écologie, de la philosophie politique, ou encore de la génétique. Il s’agira d’étudier les contours de ce que pourrait être un « avenir ouvert » dans ces champs d’application, et en quoi cette conception de l’avenir est désirable.

Human Cognition in Andreï Makine’s Oeuvre

Despite being at the heart of Makine’s aesthetics, the literary depiction of human cognition has received a rather limited amount of critical attention to date (Mistreanu 2018 and 2019). The aim of the study days we are organizing is to fill this gap. We invite all the researchers interested in Makine’s work – in which we include the four novels the author has published under the pseudonym of Gabriel Osmonde –, in the burgeoning field of cognitive literary studies (cf. Oatley 2011; Caracciolo and Bernini 2013; Jaén and Simon 2013; Calabrese and Ballerio 2014; Zunshine 2015; Garratt 2016; Lavocat 2016; Cave 2016;Troscianko and Burke 2017), as well as in cognitive neuroscience and psychology, to discuss the way in which the human mind and brain are depicted in the texts of the youngest member of the Académie française.

La critique fait aujourd’hui l’objet de nombreuses études, colloques et publications qui prennent pour objet ce discours particulier et qui participent d’un renouvellement de l’histoire de l’art. On s’intéresse également à ces espaces traditionnels de diffusion que sont les revues. En France, les Archives de la critique d’art sont un acteur important du développement de ce champ de recherche. On pourrait faire deux hypothèses pour expliquer cet intérêt en regard de la situation contemporaine de la critique. Tout d’abord, il serait inversement proportionnel à son affaiblissement. Ne serions-nous pas passés du geste critique à celui de la communication qui rend cette écriture totalement accessoire ?

Le présent volume se propose de nouer un dialogue entre les différents acteurs du monde enseignant qui sont amenés à approcher les Lumières dans le cadre de leur pratique professionnelle : les enseignants-chercheurs en études théâtrales, histoire, histoire de l’art, littérature française, littératures étrangères, musicologie ou philosophie ; les enseignants-praticiens des disciplines ou enseignements connexes dans les premier et second degrés ; les enseignants-chercheurs en sciences de l’éducation et les didacticiens de ces disciplines, intervenant dans la formation initiale des futurs enseignants ainsi que dans la formation continue.

Legal and political Krausism in Europe - law and politics at the service of the ideal of humanity

Droit et politique au service de l'idéal de l'humanité

Méconnu en France, le philosophe du droit Karl Christian Friedrich Krause (1781-1832) eut une descendance intellectuelle riche. Cultivée autant par des politiques libéraux soucieux de résoudre la « question sociale », que par des juristes intéressés par ses thèses organicistes et tutélaires, sa pensée connut un réel essor en Europe grâce aux travaux de vulgarisation de ses élèves, dont plusieurs deviendront professeurs : Heinrich Ahrens, Karl Röder, Théodore Schliephake et Hermann Karl von Leonardi. En quelques mots, la philosophie krausiste se présente comme un spiritualisme rationaliste et humaniste, articulé autour de deux postulats de départ. Ce colloque cherche à combler une lacune en France, où aucune synthèse n’existe. Nous proposerons ainsi un panorama des krausismes juridique et politique, limité à son berceau européen, mais ayant toutefois pour ambition de dévoiler et d'explorer les pistes de recherches en France.

The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

L'objectif du colloque « Documents et documentation, approche rétro-prospective » est d'interroger le paradigme documentaire dans la première partie du XX^e siècle et ses résurgences dans la période contemporaine, sous la forme proclamée ici ou là du « retour au document ». À travers une approche pluridisciplinaire (sciences de l'information et de la communication, histoire, arts, documentation), trois axes de recherche nous permettront de répondre aux enjeux spécifiques liés à ce concept de paradigme documentaire : les formes et matérialités qui résultent des innovations techniques et industrielles ; le renouvellement des modalités de visualisation de la connaissance, entendue comme nouveau langage et enfin l’articulation entre lieux de savoirs et lieux de pouvoirs.
